WD Se WD4000F9YZ 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5
  • neweggOwned For: less than 1 day

3 out of 5 eggs Just to thank the real reviewers 01/17/2014

This review is from: WD Se WD4000F9YZ 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Datacenter Capacity HDD

Pros: If handled reasonably, these appear to be good drives ... even though they will throw non-recoverable errors at lower temps than WD Red drives (Se can operate at 50 degC, Red up to 70 degC).

Cons: There's a distinct trend of sloppy packaging reported. A WD selling point of this drive is the long factory burn-in. Drives exhibiting battle-scars on delivery? No thanks. I'd rather the drives be well-packed, even if the trip here seems to be via slow boat on a long river in Brazil.

Other Thoughts: That outlet that generally sits on your order for a week, unless you pay extra? Hah. Order on a Saturday, and then try to cancel the order Sunday night. Your drives will be on the truck on Monday morning. No fuss. No muss. Just accept the drives when they arrive ... well packaged, and live on arrival.

ASUS VB Series VB198T-P Black 19
  • neweggOwned For: 1 day to 1 week

5 out of 5 eggs Worth the price ... for this "crossgrade" 12/23/2013

This review is from: ASUS VB Series VB198T-P Black 19" 5ms (GTG) LED Backlight LCD Monitor 250 cd/m2 ASCR 50,000,000:1

Pros: Fearing that 4:3-format monitors are going the way of the buggy whip, I bought a couple of these monitors based in part on these NewEgg reviews. (I bought them elsewhere to save some bucks).

The goal was to replace Acer AL-1916 monitors, which only display a small range of grey shades (everything between 0% and 12% grey is displayed identically ... and is even then, only visible when looking obliquely at the screen of the Acer).

Well, the Acers are going on the shelf (for insurance, don'cha know), and in short order, all of our monitors are being replaced with these bright ASUS VB198T-P monitors!

If you don't want to be forced into wide-format display purchases in the future, or are just looking for a very good 19" LED monitor ... then go for it. The OEM packaging is top rate ... all cables are included (VGA, DVI, audio, power).

Cons: 19" is the largest model. 21" at the same (or greater) resolution would be ideal.

Other Thoughts: I suspect I missed the sweet spot on the price of these monitors. Something tells me the price will go up, before going down ...

Seagate STAR401 Diskless System BlackArmor NAS 400 Network Storage Server for SMB User
  • Verified Owner
  • neweggOwned For: 1 day to 1 week

Pros: The box is made with recycled cardboard.

Cons: After 28 hours, the four by 2-GB disk array had still not initialized. No change in the blinking lights, no change in the display, which exhibited a warning about foreign disks. Just a seeming interminable future of the same thing.

The documentation is sparse ... at best. It seems structured as much to softpedal shortfalls in the NAS 400 Network Storage Server as to convey a bare minimum of information about operation of the product.

Seagate seems confused about the concept of advertising "SATA" compatibility. Rather than being SATA compatible, this housing appears to only be compatible Seagate drives.

Other Thoughts: Seagate describes drives 'certified' for use with this housing. Implicit in their text is the idea that other SATA drives are supported. After all, why advertise that the housing supports SATA drives? More importantly, why not caution potential purchasers, "Only operates with Seagate drives" ... and eliminate what I believe to be misleading text about SATA compliance.

It's hard to imagine buying a PC or motherboard with SATA support, and learning that only WD, Seagate, Fujitsu, or any other brand drive would work. But that's this SATA-enclosure's view of the world.

While my Google-Fu is weak, I researched this purchase before hitting the button. I suspect that those who've reported problem-free operation with non-Seagate drives might have at least two Seagate drives in their array.
