NETGEAR ProSAFE 16-Port Gigabit Ethernet Switch (GS116) - Lifetime Warranty

3 out of 5 eggs Good unit, on 3rd power supply 09/18/2011

This review is from: NETGEAR ProSAFE 16-Port Gigabit Ethernet Switch (GS116) - Lifetime Warranty

Pros: - Actual hardware unit is near bulletproof
- Good speed
- 16 ports; room to grow

Cons: - You WILL have power supply issues

Other Thoughts: I have two of these GS116s and then a smaller, 8-port GS108 in the bedroom. I am now trying to get my second power supply unit for one of the GS116's replaced in the second 6-month period. I have owned these GS116's for a couple years, but the newer of the two had an obviously cheaper power supply wall wart from the older one (thinner wire, and runs at 0.7 amps, whereas the older, more reliable power supply runs at 0.6 amps - for the exact same switch).

What has happened twice now is that I'll hear this high-pitched sound of air rushing, kinda like a slow leak on a bike tire. Inevitably it's the wall wart hissing and indicates that the thing (might be?) ready to explode.

Netgear, PLEASE get the power supply issues sorted out with the ProSafe line! I've used ProSafe products many times in the past decade, and they have all been excellent until the past 3-4 years when it seems they switched to garbage power supplies, and then they'll charge you ~$30 to replace PSU. Caveat em

5 out of 5 eggs Rock solid NAS 01/15/2011

This review is from: QNAP TS-809 PRO-US Turbo NAS

Pros: Fantastic unit, serves all my needs for file storage, backup system, media server, etc. I've owned this unit since 6/2009, and QNAP support over that time has been great. I use it to stream movies/tv shows to 3 different rooms, stream MP3s and internet radio to a Squeezebox Duet, backup all my computers to it, etc. QNAP forums and user community is solid. I currently have 8 1TB Western Digital drives in a RAID5 config, but I am hoping to upgrade to 8 2TB drives in a RAID6 config. I've already gone through having 2 drives die before, getting each drive RMA'd and replaced, and rebuilding the RAID array. Note that rebuilding an array of this size is time consuming, but not to an unexpected/unacceptable level.

Cons: I've had trouble getting Tomcat to work properly with Java - several attempts at rectifying this have proved fruitless.

Other Thoughts: My next NAS will also be a QNAP, and may actually be a second TS-809 Pro!
