Pros: Out of the box, this card boosted to 1974 Mhz core during gaming without any adjustments, so this is great news for people who don't feel confident in overclocking their computer.

I played 30 minutes of Battlefield 4 and the average temp was 72°C with an average 2060 core clock with some quick adjustments in the Firestorm utility provided my Zotac.

My particular unit's core can achieve over 2100 Mhz during bench marking with the use of Firestorm utility. The memory also had no problem running at 11000Mhz. This saw about a 10% performance improvement over stock in performance benchmarks such as 3DMark.

The cooling performance of this is much better than the Founders Edition, while being nearly silent. I have to take the side panel off my case and hold my head close to the graphics to hear any fan noise or coil whine while gaming with Vsync turned on.

The backplate on this card actually seems to be made of carbon rather than metal and is very sturdy. This helps the card sit stable in the PCI slot and there is no droop, even though the card is quite large and heavy. It also wraps around the sides of the card and covers the view of the heat pipes, which makes it look very nice. The venting holes on the backplate allow allot of heat to escape.

Finally, a GPU capable of driving my three 1080p monitors in surround without the use of SLI or Crossfire X. I definitely give this card approval for 3K resolution (5760x1080) on Ultra settings and I'm sure it can also do 4K with adjusted MSAA. The 8GB of memory combined with raw power offers a great solution for high resolution gaming without requiring multiple GPUs in SLI or CrossfireX.

Cons: When you hit super high FPS with vsync off, coil whine gets loud but it doesn't sound like normal whine. Its similar to the low rumbling sound a "box fan" makes and could be confused for fan noise. But the fans themselves are nearly silent. The coil whine is a little disappointing. But unless you are at something like 200FPS, the graphics card is still quieter than my case fans during gaming loads. The only problem, is this thing is always at insane FPS which means you will want to use vsync at all times to avoid the noise.

Other Thoughts: The only thing I would change about this product would be the big yellow stripe on the backplate. It doesn't really fit the style of my computer build or the graphics card itself. I think if they would have done a carbon fiber stripe, it would have really complimented the looks and the fact it's actually made of carbon.

3 out of 5 eggs Not really 4GB - false advertisements 01/28/2015

This review is from: GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 970 4GB G1 GAMING OC EDITION

Pros: The card stays cool and quiet. Performance isn't all that bad until you hit the 3.5GB memory limit. Recent driver updates have brought some good performance increases for this card.

Cons: The card cannot effectively use all 4GB of memory due to the design of the card. After 3.5GB of usage the performance drops off, and I have a surround monitor setup so I really needed all 4GB of memory.

The product was falsely advertised by nvidia and they have admitted to it now and suggested getting refunds if you were unhappy with this. The ROPs and bandwidth are lower than advertised.

Other Thoughts: I want to a refund for this card because I need all 4GB of memory to be usable to the full potential. If I was was only using a single 1920x1080 monitor I would not have less problems, but having 5760x1080 setup or 4K resolution I need all 4GB to be usable.

ARCTIC Accelero Xtreme 7970 VGA Cooler - nVidia & AMD, 3 Quiet 92mm PWM Fans, CrossFire

Pros: Using this cooler, my max temps are now 50°C in Furmark and 45°C in gaming usage. It is also silent up to ~65% fan speed.

Cons: Size is large, this is a 3 slot card going downward, but it also uses about a third of a slot above the card for the metal bracket. It didn't cause any issues with them placed right on top of each other in crossfire, but it did interfere with my Titanium HD sound card housing. Once I removed the housing on the sound card it fit just fine.

The four screws holding the metal bracket on the top of the card slowly loosen, and will increase temps by as much as 10°C after a few months. Just make sure to re tighten them as routing maintenance when cleaning dust out of your case.

VRM cooling is bad with this fan setup. The GPU keeps so cool the default fan curve set by AMD on my reference 7970s never increases the fan speed to get enough flow to hit the heatsinks on the VRMs effectively. If you don't set the fans to run at minimum of 60% during gaming, the VRMs will hit their max temp and you will get throttled. Good thing is, the fans are still silent at 60% anyway so I run it 65% fan speed 24/7.

Other Thoughts: Overall even with the cons I listed, I think this heatsink was a good investment if you don't plan on upgrading from your 7970 / 280x any time soon. Just be aware I found out the hard way cards with these coolers installed have very low resale value when it comes time to upgrade, worse than a reference card. So keep your original heatsink handy.
