Near Desktop level 7200 RPM performance in a laptop drive

HGST Travelstar 7K1000 HTS721010A9E630 (0J22423) 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 2.5" Internal Notebook Hard Drive (Standard Model) Bare Drive
HGST Travelstar 7K1000 HTS721010A9E630 (0J22423) 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 2.5" Internal Notebook Hard Drive (Standard Model) Bare Drive

Pros: I'll repeat the headline here: you get near-desktop level 7200 RPM performance in a laptop drive. Fast, reliable, very few early drive failures.

Cons: Look at other reviews to find cons.

Overall Review: Despite recommending SSDs to some of the user/owners,I installed the HGST 7K1000 in 6 MacBooks and 9 Thinkpads/Latitudes since it was introduced - and only one ever complained of performance or reliability issues. I lived with it myself from 11/2012 to 2/2015 as a principal HDD in a Dell Precision M6600 and found little to complain about. Few people are asking for spinning hard drives anymore, but the 7K1000 could be the best of breed. Despite that, get one soon if you want one - spinning HDs are not long for this world.

Most Critical Review

Strongly unrecommended, Failed after less than 10 uses

Silicon Power 64GB Jewel J80 USB 3.0 Flash Drive (SP064GBUF3J80V1T)
Silicon Power 64GB Jewel J80 USB 3.0 Flash Drive (SP064GBUF3J80V1T)

Pros: Cute and slick looking 'jewel' housing

Cons: Failed after two uses. Presents to USB controller as unformatted, and unreadable. Just happened to be just over 30 days so Newegg can't help. Not able to reformat either 'quick' or thoroughly as diskpart shows I/O error.

Overall Review: Own and use almost 20 USB flash drives and I treat them very well, no abuse. This is the only the second in history that has failed ( the other was a generic unbranded drive in a kid's theme packaging) It appears both 'unformatted' AND write-protected.

I spoke too soon

ORICO 25AU3 Aluminum 2.5-Inch Laptop Hard Drive HDD USB 3.0 SATA Enclosure Case with Sleeve - Purple
ORICO 25AU3 Aluminum 2.5-Inch Laptop Hard Drive HDD USB 3.0 SATA Enclosure Case with Sleeve - Purple

Pros: Attractive. Sturdy Exterior. Reliably recognized by USB connectors

Cons: The latching mechanism that ensures the drive that is mounted inside is secure does not function. It will not latch if there is a drive inside ( I tried many drives) and it will not latch if there is no drive mounted inside. Thus we can be sure that the latching mechanism is defective.

Overall Review: Also, Newegg is forwarding mail to a mailbox at Orico that has been deleted. One gets a 550 "Mailbox not found" error if you try to email them through Newegg. Wow, that is a behavior unworthy of recommendation.

230T a nice choice in mid-ATX

Corsair, Graphite Series 230T Windowed Compact Mid-Tower Case, CC-9011042-WW
Corsair, Graphite Series 230T Windowed Compact Mid-Tower Case, CC-9011042-WW

Pros: Very impressed with the metalworking accuracy and solidity of this case. Fine accessibility from both case sides and L and R sides have an easy removal and reattachment, not prone to getting in the wrong track. Front switches and audio jacks are the opposite of flimsy, they're tough and will last. Fan mounting options are nice. PSU mounting is positive and accurate.

Cons: Not a lot of cable management features.

Overall Review: I doubt there is any competition in cable management around this price, so not much of a con.

E6600 - P2C not C2D

Intel Pentium E6600 - Pentium Wolfdale Dual-Core 3.06 GHz LGA 775 65W Desktop Processor - BX80571E6600
Intel Pentium E6600 - Pentium Wolfdale Dual-Core 3.06 GHz LGA 775 65W Desktop Processor - BX80571E6600

Pros: Fast* and reliable, overclockable with negligible thermal penalty, and cost-effective. *relative to $ outlay

Cons: None in this budget range.

Overall Review: As an advocate of trailing edge tech, I got an E2180 as the initial processor for my GA-P35-DS3R 2.0 (late 2007) In May of 2012, I pepped up that machine with a new E6600 and am very pleased. There are many options with this combination for overclocking, and the combo is very stable with the stock heat sink/fan, hardly ever budging past 41C at +20% ~ + 30%. I expect YMMV but this "Pentium Dual Core" (don't ask me what the contrast is with a Core 2 Duo) is a good way to add some pep to a "mature" system.

7200.12 is an improvement

Seagate BarraCuda 7200.12 ST3500413AS 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive
Seagate BarraCuda 7200.12 ST3500413AS 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: This drive specs out quite fast. It is cool and is very quiet, especially compared to the Seagate 7200.9 160GB it is replacing. The former drive was reliable but in addition to the extra space, the performance boost, coolness and quiet of 7200.12 is welcome. Admittedly you can pay a little more and get slightly better specs but this drive fills a niche.

Cons: no demerits yet
