HP J9078A Unmanaged ProCurve Switch 1400-24G

5 out of 5 eggs Fast and quiet - excellent product 01/17/2008

This review is from: HP J9078A Unmanaged ProCurve Switch 1400-24G

Pros: Thermal design requires no fan; quiet; fast; no problems

Cons: little bit pricy

Other Thoughts: This is an excellent product. Compared to other switches with similar features and specs this unit has no fan. It does get a little bit warm but not hot. I have mixed equipment with 100Mbit and 1GBit and had no problems so far. I have no devices which perform at full 1GBit speed but the file transfer between a NAS and a PC was at max. device speed - LAN is not a limiting factor any more.

Western Digital Caviar Green WD10EACS 1TB 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5

Pros: Quite, fast, stays relatively cool, and lot of disk space

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I use this hard drive in my QNAP TS-101 NAS. Although, it is not on the hard disk compatibility list for that NAS the TS-101 had no problems with this drive at all. From reading the technical data, there might be slightly faster drives with more cache memory but for a NAS on a 100MBps LAN the network is the limiting factor, so that the drive performance is a secondary criteria. In my opinion, this drive is ideal for the purpose of using it in a NAS running 24/7 in a SOHO environment as it has a low power consumption, is quite and does not warm up much.

4 out of 5 eggs Great Product w/ little flaws 11/13/2006

This review is from: QNAP TS-101 9-in-1 NAS Server

Pros: Very versatile NAS device, extremely easy to set up, reasonable price tag, silent (no fan), nice add-on features, ideal for the SOHO area

Cons: Little flaws (does not send email on error/warning although test message was sent, unable to delete download files, USB sticks not always detected, only able to delete copied files from USB devices via Web file manager etc.), no possibility to set access rights on "main" folders (only shares)

Other Thoughts: The QNAP TS-101 is really a great product and ideal for home user and small offices. The NAS function works pretty well without any problems at all. Some of the additional functions seems to be a little bit premature but usable.
