HP Laptop EliteBook 8440P Intel Core i5 1st Gen 520M (2.40 GHz) 8 GB Memory 128 GB SSD 14.1
  • neweggOwned For: more than 1 year

Pros: I've had an identical unit myself for over a year, and its quick and powerful - nice that it comes with an SSD and 8GB ram, I had to install my own. It's a high end business road warrior machine, a little dated (no USB 3, first generation I5) but with lots of built in options and features; eSata, set up for a dock that's readily available on "e-redacted", metal case.

Cons: You won't have this problem with Newegg, but I bought one of these from somebody else off Craigs List, and realized they had thrown an non-legal copy of Windows Ultimate on it. However, it was relatively east to get a copy of the correct HP Win 7 Pro disks and reainstall, which was recognized by MS no problem. Also, it's a first gen I5 with rudimentary graphics, not a gamer by any means.

Other Thoughts: This is the kind of beast I like - I drive a 10 year old Mercedes that I paid $6500 for that cost somebody else $65000. These are really rugged laptops, once top of the line, though now dated in some ways. Also consider; if you must use Windows, Win 7 Pro is my favorite and costs $135, so the laptop only costs $99.

1 out of 5 eggs Correction; beyond disappointed 02/24/2015

This review is from: TOSHIBA DT01ACA300 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: None. I thought at least the automated RMA system was hgoing to provide the usual level of service (i.e. pre-paid return shipped immediately, with a return when bad drive received, all on line), in that two of the drives out of the 4 I bought were going back, but I was wrong. Unlike the competition, Toshiba wants me to find a written receipt and call a toll free number (oh, what fun). I really wish I was a shill; alas, I am a crushed Toshiba fan. This is bad, folks, real bad. Don't take one even if they are giving them away.

Cons: 2 out of 4 failed Smart testing in less than a year; as I write this, Windows keeps telling me to back up my data. Swell. where do I back up 3gb of data? Onto my remaining 3gb Toshiba drive? Let's see... unreliable products, bad customer service.. Oh, Toshiba, where art thou? On their way to joining so many other formerly quality companies; which exist now as a brand name slapped onto shoddy goods.

Other Thoughts: Back in the day, a friend said about the old VW bugs, "How can you call it an economy car if you have to rebuild the engine every 60,000 miles?" How is a drive cheap if it fails prematurely and you get put through the ringer trying to replace it? Shill indeed. Ignore the reviews of other newegg users (like I did) at your own risk.

2 out of 5 eggs Disappointed, and really, I'm not a shill. 02/24/2015

This review is from: TOSHIBA DT01ACA300 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Cheap. Automated Toshiba RMA system was not completely impossible to find, although pretty difficult. And yes, I've used the internet before. Before some internet savvy users were out of diapers, like my daughters, who would never have had the patience to actually find the right site. If you do insist on buying these things, consider paying extra for the extended warranty *(there goes cheap) or wait for the kit to go on sale; nice box and an extra year of warranty. I forgot, you get the pleasure of working on your computer late at night before going to work the next morning.

Cons: Since you are probably buying big drives to store data, not really so cheap after all. I bought two of these 3gb and two of the 2GB, and was planning on buying a few more for a NAS raid setup, but now I'm thinking not. One of the 2gb's is going back on SMART failure, and now one o the 3gb's. I'd blame my system or clumsiness, but this rig has had 5 or 6 drives from all the big companies I was suspicious of, and non has ever failed.

Other Thoughts: Sincerely, I alway had a thing for Toshiba, but that was the old days, when, dig this, all HDD's had a 5 year warranty or noone would buy them.

Also, if any sinister corporate ghouls are reading this, while I have not been a shill in the past, I am considering this role in the future, depending on the pay and benefits.

Seriously, outside of the usual fanboy AMD-Intel stuff, ignore user comments on newegg at your own risk
