Pros: Nice looking and stable on Linux. Does what it's supposed to do. Modern BIOS.

Cons: None I can think of.

WD WD Green WDBAAY0020HNC-NRSN 2TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5
  • Verified Owner
  • neweggOwned For: more than 1 year

Pros: Price is ok

Cons: This thing would constantly shut out on me during backup runs. There's something in the firmware of this thing that is incompatible with Linux. I started to look for a replacement today and I thought of writing this review.

VANTEC NST-380SU3-BK Aluminum 3.5
  • Verified Owner
  • neweggOwned For: 1 day to 1 week

Pros: Setup was simple and straightforward.

Cons: The pins for the LED were bent.

Other Thoughts: I'm using this with Linux (kernel 3.5.0). In my logs the following block of lines is appended (exactly every 10 minutes):

kernel: [ 1218.653939] ata7.00: failed command: SMART
kernel: [ 1218.653944] ata7.00: cmd b0/d1:01:00:4f:c2/00:00:00:00:00/00 tag 0 pio 512 in
kernel: [ 1218.653944] res 40/00:ff:00:00:00/00:00:00:00:00/00 Emask 0x4 (timeout)
kernel: [ 1218.653947] ata7.00: status: { DRDY }
kernel: [ 1218.653952] ata7: hard resetting link
kernel: [ 1219.145410] ata7: SATA link up 1.5 Gbps (SStatus 113 SControl 310)
kernel: [ 1219.158643] ata7.00: configured for UDMA/133
kernel: [ 1219.158666] ata7: EH complete

I tried to passing the following kernel option to no avail:

Other than brief times that the drive is unavailable (transfers stop for about 10 seconds when the above lines appear) there doesn't seem to be anything actually broken.
