ASUS RT-N56U Wireless Router Dual Band N600 Multimedia Ultra Slim Gigabit 802.11a/b/g/n support USB Storage, Print and Media Server

Pros: Decent interface, lots of settings. Very sexy looking product, but I have mine in a cabinet, so I should have just gotten any other wifi router for half the price instead of paying for the looks.

Cons: My ethernet connections stopped working a few days ago, they were connecting to the router just fine but there was no internet connectivity. Thought that it was possibly a modem issue or with the connected device itself (TV).

Earlier this evening, I noticed that even though all my devices were connecting just fine to the router via both ethernet and wireless, there was no internet connectivity. I did notice that I could not access the router via (ethernet or wireless) so I reset the router. After updating the firmware and playing around with the connections I noticed the following:

Whenever I rebooted the router without any ethernet devices connected, the internet worked just fine. Whenever I attached an ethernet cable to the router, it would immediately break the internet connection requiring a power cycle of the router without any ethernet devices attached to work again.

ASUS support hasn't been of much help, their suggestion was to update the firmware which I already did and mentioned in my initial correspondence to them. I did manage to find some others with the same issue:, unfortunately his fix was to sell this router and purchase another brand.

Other Thoughts: Need to find a back-up router while this ASUS gets sorted out...

Linksys WRT54G2 Wireless Broadband Router 802.11b/g up to 54Mbps/ 10/100 Mbps Ethernet Port x4

2 out of 5 eggs Terrible follow-up to the WRT54G 09/12/2008

This review is from: Linksys WRT54G2 Wireless Broadband Router 802.11b/g up to 54Mbps/ 10/100 Mbps Ethernet Port x4

Pros: Decent looks, black color meshes well when situated near my home theater equipment (about 5' away). No ugly antennas.

Cons: Terrible range, wireless connection constantly drops. I used to have my original WRT54G sitting right next to my home theater equipment and that unit never had issues. I moved this new unit further away from that equipment and closer to the center of my apartment and yet the signal has dropped 90 - 100%. It's shocking how bad this unit is. Where are the firmware updates?

Other Thoughts: If you don't care about looks, get the original WRT54G, that unit was a time tested beast of a unit. Mine didn't die, I gave it to my brother because his DLink router died on him and I ended up purchasing this unit for its looks. Bad choice...
