Pros: Fast.. huge range, signal blasts through walls like a boss
Cons: Big, but who cares if it's in the right spot
Overall Review: At first, great range.. but slooooowwww wifi.. was getting at max 14Mbps .. ya.. that was it.. That was first install with firmware out of the box. I let it check the version and it only found 1.02.. same results.. slowwwwwww.. This was running speedtest dot net.. 100Mbps to the house from cable so I expected a lot better over wireless especially from this monster. Something obviously wrong. Downloaded and upgraded to the 1.03 firmware from dlink website. Boom.. pegged out speedtest after that 120Mbps now.. We'll see if that holds. I'm really not pleased that this router wouldn't have worked without the 1.03 firmware update though.. took a few months for them to release that, so had I not waited to install until after 1.03 was out, I would have been really ticked off with those bad speeds. I lucked out though and just installed and got it up to 1.03
Pros: Tri-band USB 2.0 and 3.0 port Telephone tech support was prompt
Cons: Poor documentation (even the full manual available from the mfr's website is lacking in detail) No MAC filtering Cannot disable WPS
Overall Review: At about $300, this is a high-end router, at least as home products go. While it does deliver good throughput and has some nice features (such as the USB ports, with the ability to connect an external drive for some basic online storage capacity), I was dismayed to learn that it does not support two very basic functionalities that are almost universal in even low-end wireless routers: MAC address filtering and disabling WPS. (I had to call Dlink opening Case # CC737809, to learn these things). Yes, I do realize that it's relatively trivial to spoof MAC address filtering; but if a $70 wireless router bought from a local store allows MAC filtering, it strikes me as simply incredible that a high-end device like the DIR-890L does not. As to WPS - there are known vulnerabilities in WPS, and once again many wireless routers - including many low-end devices - permit the owner to disable this feature altogether. I would not have purchased this particular device had I been aware of the lack of two such basic features. As it stands, I will keep the router and use it - as stated, it does offer pretty good performance - but my advice to other buyers is to keep looking.
Pros: Simple Interface and set up for the average user. Smart Connect seems to work.
Cons: The interface for this router is very simple and does not allow for advanced configurations. You can not add by mac or ip address. The only way to even manipulate a device is for the router to see it first and then you can add it to preferred. You can't adjust bandwidth for different devices
Overall Review: I like the look and specs of the router but I want to be able to go into it and do some advance configurations and set up my network how I want it. This is fine for someone who wants to run the wizard and run with the defaults, but for advanced users I would not recommend this router.
Pros: Nice Router when it is working properly.
Cons: Purchased this product in february 2016, recently it became defective 4 months out of warranty. contacted Dlink was informed that it only came with a 1 year warranty and they didn't offer repair service even at my expense, basicly they said just throw it away it was trash. In the future I will only purchase a router that has a better warranty and better service. I am very disappointed since I paid so much for it.
Overall Review: I do not recommend this this product or other Dlink products because of their poor warranty and poor service after the product becomes defective.
Pros: Cranked right-up and immediately recognized all ELEVEN devices on our (home) network. Increased speeds versus previous DIR-655 by approximately 136%. Goes through 3 walls and totally encompasses a 4000+ sq ft. house. Also works perfectly on both 2.4 and 5 GB bands.
Cons: Had to print and study a 180 page manual before getting the results above. For $309, one would think that D-Link could include a hard copy printed manual. Also, BE SURE to update the firmware before making a final judgement on the efficacy of this router. It will NOT perform up to capacity or meet initial expectations unless firmware is updated. Also, suggest you ensure that your modem can handle the throughput. (we have a Motorola Arris 6183).
Overall Review: $309 is a big tag but if one relies on internet speed for streaming as much as we do, it is totally worth it!
Pros: Extremely fast Extended Wireless Range great looking responsive, and functional UI (is that using HTML5?) Looks pretty epic too!
Cons: I was getting dropped connections on both Wired and Wireless, with the shipping firmware and 1.02, but this has seemed to be fixed with 1.103 Build 7 (for NA Region) Also its Large, not really a con, but bigger than what I expected lol Limit of only 15 port forwards
Overall Review: despite the cons, its definitely a step up from my 5 year old Asus N Router. I would definitely like to see an increase in the max port forwards for those running extra stuff at home. (Minecraft, Teamspeak etc) 25-30 rules would be more than sufficient for most clients
Pros: Extremely Fast Wireless Routing Throughput Very High Extremely Easy to Set Up
Cons: Limited to 15 port forwarding rules. No UPnP or NAT-PMP Auto Port Forwarding. Turning on QoS *seriously* degrades throughput for *all* connected devices.
Overall Review: Was seriously bummed out that QoS being on throttled my 300mbps internet connection to 80mbps - for the device listed as highest priority in the QoS settings. Throughput with QoS off however is fantastic for both wired and wireless. But the limitations on port forwarding rules, as well as apparent lack of UPnP to automate the process seem like glaring omissions. For a router of this level, I do expect a more robust feature set. And this is merely a nitpick, but the advertised "statistics" feature showing you bandwith graphs is a joke. I thought it would be like the robust metrics of, say, the open-source Tomato firmware, but it's nothing more than a cheesy gimmick - not useful for monitoring or troubleshooting. Honestly, I'm wishing I bought the Netgear AC3200 router that at least lets you install DD-WRT on it.
Pros: After getting tired of purchasing defective products from competitors, I switched to D-link products over ten years ago and haven't been happier. We had a DIR-655 router prior to purchasing this and felt the upgrade was needed because of all the video streaming we now do in the house. I've been generally satisfied with the product. This thing has power given the CPU and multiple bands. I'll still have a connection on my cell phone after driving a 3 blocks away from my home. The problems we frequently encountered on the DIR-655 was buffering and lag when multiple people had streams running; that issue no longer exists with this new one.
Cons: The admin interface is very immature. It has some advanced features, but the granularity of settings within those feature sets is lacking. For example, the QoS option simply lets you click and drag connected items between Priority levels but offers nothing to tweak individual QoS settings further. I recommend anyone considering buying this use the admin emulator on the Dlink support page for this router to ensure it offers what you need. It gives the impression that the product needed to meet a deadline and the interface was rushed. My hope is the interface will mature as time goes on. This thing is pretty big and can't be put discretely somewhere like we could with past routers. The width and length compare to that of a laptop and the height is about 3 to 4". Current cost at $309 is prohibitive when compared to similar competitor models.
