ASRock is usually really, really good

ASRock B650M PG RIPTIDE AM5 Micro-ATX Motherboard, 4 slots DDR5, 2 PCIe 4.0 x16, HDMI 2.1 Port, 2.5Gb LAN, Dual M.2 Slots, 7.1 Nahimic Audio, USB3.2 Gen2 Type-C, 12+2+1 Power Phase, AMD CrossFire

Pros: For the two hours that it worked, this board seemed to do everything that it was supposed to do, perfectly. ASRock components that I've bought in the past have all been perfect.

Cons: Customer service. I had a problem, and I would have appreciated a faster RMA. I've been waiting over a month for a replacement.

Overall Review: It's hard to say if I'm going to like this motherboard, or not. I ordered it in November. After building a PC with it, it worked perfectly for 2 hours and then suddenly just died. Instead of returning it to Newegg for a replacement, I made the mistake of trusting ASRock to support their products, and did an RMA. First, it took a while for the RMA to be approved. I shipped it back to them a month ago. Now, a month later, I get a notification that they're just now shipping me a used motherboard to try instead of the new one I purchased. So 3 1/2 months after purchasing this, I'm hopefully going to get a chance to actually have a working PC. Over the past 30+ years, I've built at least 30 PCs and servers myself, so I have some idea what I'm doing. This is only the second time I've had hardware issues with a build (the first was caused by a poorly designed cooling system back-plate from EKWB; they actually had to redesign the part, and a year later got me the newly designed part, and that build has been perfect ever since). With this build, before complaining to ASRock, I tried to eliminate all other possibilities, including trying a different power supply, removing all non-essential components, swapping out components that could be problematic, etc. It's terribly frustrating that after doing all of that work myself, ASRock customer support has cost me this much time. -- Update (March 20, 2023) - Received the replacement motherboard a few days ago. Indeed, the motherboard was the problem. We re-built the computer yesterday. It now works well. On the plus side, ASRock quality is usually very good. On the negative side, it's now been many months since I purchased the motherboard, and only now the computer is getting to be used. I wish there were a better way to handle RMAs. Update (March 21, 2023) - changed from 3 stars to 5 stars for the product (but not for the RMA experience)

Most Critical Review

Worked fine for a few months; no customer service response

ADATA Ultimate SU800 M.2 2280 256GB SATA III 3D TLC NAND Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) ASU800NS38-256GT-C
ADATA Ultimate SU800 M.2 2280 256GB SATA III 3D TLC NAND Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) ASU800NS38-256GT-C

Pros: * Easy to install * Fast enough

Cons: * Failed after just a few months (3 year warranty) * ADATA has not responded to an email sent several days ago inquiring about how to get a warranty replacement

Overall Review: This would be a fine purchase if the vendor provided any customer service.

Tight, but amazing

HYTE Revolt 3 Small Form Factor Premium ITX Computer Gaming Case with 700W 80+ Gold SFX Power Supply, White
HYTE Revolt 3 Small Form Factor Premium ITX Computer Gaming Case with 700W 80+ Gold SFX Power Supply, White

Pros: * It's a compact case * Lots of options for cooling * Looks great * Cables hide out of the way

Cons: * The only real con is how tight it is inside to work in.

Overall Review: Make sure you already know how to build small PCs before you try working in this one, but the results are really nice.

Still early, but seems to work at rated speed

OLOy Blade RGB (OLOY) 64GB (2 x 32GB) 288-Pin PC RAM DDR5 6400 (PC5 51200) Desktop Memory Model ND5U3264321BRKDA
OLOy Blade RGB (OLOY) 64GB (2 x 32GB) 288-Pin PC RAM DDR5 6400 (PC5 51200) Desktop Memory Model ND5U3264321BRKDA

Pros: No installation issues. RGB works (if you like that stuff). Fairly easy to configure the BIOS to use the rated speed. The price was reasonable.

Cons: No cons so far.

Overall Review: First time I've purchased from this brand, but the product seems to work fine.

Would be awesome, if it worked

MSI MPG Z490M GAMING EDGE WIFI LGA 1200 Intel Z490 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
MSI MPG Z490M GAMING EDGE WIFI LGA 1200 Intel Z490 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: * Nicely designed * Has all the bells and whistles that I need, and then some * Attractive lay-out * Decent layout for large fan, water-cooling, etc.

Cons: * Does not work. Problems from day one. Even freezes up (requiring full power cycle) when in the BIOS. * Sending it back to MSI for repair/replacement; expected turnaround time is over a month. (No complaints with their tech support responsiveness, though.) So I buy and build a computer, spend weeks diagnosing the failure, and then have to lose another month to wait for them to turn around the warranty work. This sucks. * The BIOS is all GUI and pretty, but it was designed by a nut case. Finding anything of value in the BIOS is up to pure luck, and I have many hours wasted in there. * BIOS needs a setting called "disable MSI motherboard-review benchmark cheats". Trying to test this to Intel specs (to figure out if my problems are caused by the "hidden" MSI overclocking) is an exercise in frustration.

Overall Review: I'm still in the middle of this process, so I may have to come back and update this review. Look, I love the motherboard, if/when it works. Really, it is nicely designed, and as attractive as a piece of future e-waste can be. The ports and expandability and the features are all impressive. This is a product that I really, really want to love. And I know that QC issues plague all companies, so I want to hope and assume that I am the only one that got a bad copy of this. (It *could* *theoretically* be a faulty CPU, but I'm pretty sure that Intel still tests those before sending them out.) Experience: Building custom PCs for 30 years. Other computers for 10 years before that. Watercooling. Servers. Minis. Pretty much everything. Build: * Phanteks Enthoo Mini XL case (to support 3x external drives for ripping) * Seasonic FOCUS GX-650, 650W 80+ Gold, Full-Modular Silent * Intel Core i7-10700K * G.SKILL Trident Z Neo Series 64GB (2 x 32GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3600 with LEDs * NVidia Titan GPU * Watercooling by EKWB (temps under 35c, almost, silent), 2x140s, 6x120s

Enormous! But well designed

Phanteks Enthoo Mini XL PH-ES414M_BK Aluminum mATX Tower Computer Case, Window, Black
Phanteks Enthoo Mini XL PH-ES414M_BK Aluminum mATX Tower Computer Case, Window, Black

Pros: * Lots of space behind the motherboard compartment for wires * Nice isolated position for the power supply * Pretty much the only case still made for 3x external drives (that's what I needed) * I'm a big fan of the big fans and the ability to put radiators on top and back and front and bottom. * Plenty of room for a pump etc. * SUPER AWESOME: THE THINGS INSIDE THIS CASE ACTUALLY UNSCREW -- THEY'RE NOT ALL WELDED IN!!! * Plenty of stuff included in the package. Well organized. * Nice lighting * Pretty well done external plugs and controls.

Cons: * It really is large for a uATX case! * Broken latch (they're sending me a replacement part) * Missing foot pad (they're sending me a replacement part)

Overall Review: Please, before you buy this, actually look at the measurements of the case and figure out if it will fit through the door into your house. This is not a small case. Great for water cooled PCs. Easily takes multiple radiators. Easy to work with. Stuff unscrews and comes apart, which is SUPER rare these days (everything gets welded, even in high-end cases, and I hate that!) Nice touch: Comes with a screw organizer -- a box of screws each in their own little section, instead of 40 bags. Would I buy it again? Yes. Love it. (Sure, now that it's together, I wish it were smaller.)
