Lots of bang for the buck

DELL Laptop Inspiron Intel Core i5-2430M 8GB Memory 640GB HDD Intel HD Graphics 3000 17.3" Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit 17R-N7110
DELL Laptop Inspiron Intel Core i5-2430M 8GB Memory 640GB HDD Intel HD Graphics 3000 17.3" Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit 17R-N7110

Pros: Great display, sleek exterior, good amount of RAM. 2 USB 3.0 Ports, full size HDMI port. Replacing the hard drive with an SSD increased battery life, and made it MUCH faster

Cons: Slow out of the box, could have included full software disk. Ridiculous how much a pain it is to replace the hard drive. almost a complete dissasemnbly of the laptop, including removing the keyboard, then the entire palm rest. However, I will say, it's a very simple process, just leaves a lot of room for scratches removing the keyboard until you understand how they are snapped in. Highly recommend finding a youtube demo how to do this.

Overall Review: I was looking for a machine to just track my cameras, and display on a 47 inch TV (4 security cameras). I was poking around for a desktop and saw the price on this. I figured for a hundred bucks more I could have a laptop, which I don't have right now, but I have owned a Dell Inspiron before. I knew it wasn't going to be lightning fast, but I just replaced my hard drive (vertex 3) with a new Vertex 4 RAID0. So I had an extra SSD, and a very fast one at that, laying around. I could have survived with the slow 5400 RPM drive, but I had the extra SSD laying around. I put it in and as expected it was exceptionally faster, and very responsive. Now I'm very happy with it, and take the laptop with me. When plugged in at home it connects to my tv and displays my security system as an extended desktop.

Most Critical Review

Router cannot handle high throughput.

Cisco Small Business RVS4000 Gigabit Security Router with VPN 1 x RJ45 WAN Ports 4 x 10/100/1000Mbps LAN Ports
Cisco Small Business RVS4000 Gigabit Security Router with VPN 1 x RJ45 WAN Ports 4 x 10/100/1000Mbps LAN Ports

Pros: Good options for cheap routers. Best i could find for residential. even though it's a small business router it's priced as a residential

Cons: underpowered badly. It losese 3 eggs for me simply because it's not capable of the throughput i have. I have 50mbps down and 2 up. I get the up fine, but this router capps right at 26mbps. I thought it was my cable service, but after much research it's definitely the router that's bottlenecked. The sad part is there hasn't been firmware updates for years, so there's simply no way to determine the real problem that I can see. All I can assume is it's just simply not powerful enough. Who knows.

Overall Review: If you don't have a big download cap this is a good router. it delivers all of the features it promises. If you DO have a high cap, forget it. you'll be very dissapointed.

Defending a good product

OCZ Vertex 3 2.5" 120GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) VTX3-25SAT3-120G
OCZ Vertex 3 2.5" 120GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) VTX3-25SAT3-120G

Pros: VERY fast. Obviously silent.

Cons: I deducted one egg but it's not a functional problem. See 'other thoughts' for further explanation

Overall Review: I love this drive. I bought it to test as an O/S drive and if I liked it I'd get another and RAID0. I deducted one egg because I had the same problem others are complaining about here. But instead of just complaining I went to their forums and read the suggestions. Based on the responses about BSOD, then not showing up in the BIOS, these people are having the same problem. it's the TRIM feature. It takes about 2 seconds to download the utility to turn TRIM off, and once done the problem is gone. Bench-marked at 500mbps read and about 490mbps write. Incredible speed. Using CrystalDisk Mark As a side note, I installed windows then ran into the blue screen problem. Thought it was a corrupt install so I did it again. I decided to time the second install because it seemed awful fast. From boot, to the final 'welcome' screen after everything was installed it took 7 minutes. yes, that's right SEVEN minutes to install windows.

Nice case. But why skimp on drive rack?

Corsair Graphite Series 600T CC600TM Graphite Grey Mid-Tower Gaming Case
Corsair Graphite Series 600T CC600TM Graphite Grey Mid-Tower Gaming Case

Pros: This is a well 'finished' case. Care was taken in not leaving blank, sharp, bare metal. The ports for wiring is well thought out and overall this is a pretty sturdy case. Nice and wide.

Cons: The drive racks are just awful. The mounts are infinitely cheap and just skimpy. I really expected much better. This cost 2 eggs because in my opinion, mounting the hard drives is very much a core component. Also, I feel bad for anyone that is a lower level tech trying to put this together. There are no instructions AT ALL for the fact that you mount the drives backwards. It was easy to figure out for me, but if you aren't technically inclined it's not easy. I would bet money that there are high numbers of people who have mounted the drives head in instead of the correct way.

Overall Review: I do like that you can move the mount for the secondary drives up or down depending on your video card size. I also really like the bracket behind the PSU that you can lock in down with. I am very sad about the horrific quality of the drive mounts. I swear this has to be the worst set up for drives I have seen in 10 years. Had I known how flimsy and cheap it was I would not have bought the case. However, it's working, drives are mounted and since the brackets are so cheap I decided to mount only my SSD RAID0 SATA 3 drives, and bought an external USB 3.0 RAID5 enclosure.

Long time owner

8ms Height,Swivel Adjustable WideScreen LCD Monitor w/USB hub & Card Reader 300 cd/m2 1000:1
8ms Height,Swivel Adjustable WideScreen LCD Monitor w/USB hub & Card Reader 300 cd/m2 1000:1

Pros: Fantastic monitor. Colors are vivid, clarity is fantastic (i run at the native 2560X1600) and it works perfectly. It's convenient to move as well. I've moved from one end of the U.S. to the other with this monitor three times now. The way the back support pops off, and it locks the monitor in the 'down' position is a very nice touch.

Cons: The touch sensitive power button doesn't always work the first try. it's almost like it's not quite sensitive enough. But it does work. 30 inches is nice, but in retrospect, I'd rather have two smaller monitors than one big one. I find myself with lots of unused real estate, whereas if i had two monitors, I could maximize different programs on each

Overall Review: I bought this monitor in 2006 when it first came out. I wanted to write a review because of all the monitors I have ever owned, this is the best I've ever had, by leaps and bounds. Here's a great example of just how good this monitor is. I've owned mine for 5, almost 6 years now. I paid $1500.00 for it. it's only a couple hundred bucks less now. That is unheard of in computer hardware to retain value like that. I highly recommend you consider this if you're in the market for a large display. it's utterly fantastic.

Happy new Xbox

Microsoft Xbox 360 (New Design) 250 GB Hard Drive Black
Microsoft Xbox 360 (New Design) 250 GB Hard Drive Black

Pros: Great unit. Gets hot but dissipates well.

Cons: The touch sensitive power button and disc tray open are great. However, if you have cats, they will figure out that if they sniff them, it turns it on and off, or ejects the disc :)

Overall Review: leaving one egg off, just because a perfect score should be remarkable
