Best Access Point

D-Link AirePremier DAP-2310 High Power Wireless-N Gigabit PoE Access Point with AP Manager Controller
D-Link AirePremier DAP-2310 High Power Wireless-N Gigabit PoE Access Point with AP Manager Controller

Pros: Excellent features, performance, user interface, and manual. This AP has everything--much more than its Cisco and Netgear equivalents. It even includes a realtime listing of wireless clients by MAC address, indicating their protocol type (b, g, or n) and received signal strength.

Cons: Haven't found any yet.

Overall Review: Having experience with LinkSys WAP54G and Cisco WAP2000, I found the DAP-2310 to be a refreshing step up in features and quality. The WAP54G works fine, but it does'nt support 802.11n, so it is limited to 54 mbps. The WAP2000 doesn't support n either, and it has a long-standing s/w bug that causes it to lose network connectivity 15 minutes after reboot in Win7 peer networks. The DAP-2310 does everything right, and for a rediculously low price.

Breaks USB Boot Apps

SanDisk Cruzer 4GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive SDCZ36-004G-B35
SanDisk Cruzer 4GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive SDCZ36-004G-B35

Pros: Works as expected for pure data storage applications.

Cons: Differs from earlier Sandisk 4GB Flash Drives. It falsely reports as a fixed disk rather than what it is, a removable drive. This breaks all Apps that create bootable drives, such as Windows 7 DVD Download Tool. Sandisk's explanation is that they changed their design to comply with Windows 8 GO feature. Microsoft's own software fails to recognize this drive for purposes of creating a bootable installation drive!

Overall Review: Don't buy this product if you want to create bootable USB drives. Another reason to hate Microsoft, and now a new reason to avoid Sandisk thumb drives.

Very Good Switch

TP-LINK TPL#TLSG1008P 8 Port Gigabit PoE Switch
TP-LINK TPL#TLSG1008P 8 Port Gigabit PoE Switch

Pros: Having the power and ethernet connections on the back and lights on the front simplified my cabling. If you don't need a managed switch but you have some POE devices on your network, this is the switch for you.

Cons: The switch runs a little bit warmer than previous switches, but I appreciate not having more fan noise.

Overall Review: I would prefer integral power supply rather than a brick, even if it significantly increased the size.

Outstanding Product

D-LINK BUSINESS DAP-3662 AC1200 Dual Band Outdor PoE AP
D-LINK BUSINESS DAP-3662 AC1200 Dual Band Outdor PoE AP

Pros: This AP's web appliance has the same great UI as the rest of D-Link's APs. The main added feature in this one is its all-weather construction. It comes well sealed against moisture entry with cleverly constructed cable entries that work with just hand tightening and well thought out mounting provisions. D-Link even provides a screw-in water tight plug for the second LAN cable entry when it is unused.

Cons: The UI automatically logs off the user after several minutes of inactivity, as a security feature D-Link support says. This cannot be changed to allow more time for making complex entries, to set up a VLAN for instance. There are provisions in the UI to set timeouts for SSH and telnet, which according to D-Link support are not implemented in this model. There is no mention in the manual about how to set up the second LAN port.

Overall Review: If you want a good outdoor AP with a fine UI, this is probably the best you will find. It is pricey but easily worth it. It's a good product, but D-Link could make it even better if they spent a little time on the UI details and manual mentioned above.

Produced Blue Screen

Logitech HD Webcam C525, Portable HD 720p Video Calling with Autofocus
Logitech HD Webcam C525, Portable HD 720p Video Calling with Autofocus

Pros: Nice package. Good specs. Good looking software.

Cons: It failed spectacularly after installation. Single image capture produced a blue screen and reboot of Win7Pro x64. Repeated S/W download and installation with same result. Then, the uninstall hung, forcing another reboot. My OS has never had any problems with other devices (even Logitech's) or applications. Finally, restored my entire system from an image backup, which I had made just before the cam install.

Overall Review: Can't say whether the problem was caused by hardware or S/W. If it was hardware, it could have been an isolated case. Don't want to risk my system again, however, for a webcam that I didn't need that badly. Newegg authorized a refund, and I returned the product.

Wireless Access Software Fails

Cisco Small Business WAP2000 Wireless-G Access Point: PoE
Cisco Small Business WAP2000 Wireless-G Access Point: PoE

Pros: It has good features and a reasonable user interface.

Cons: It's software contains a bug that prevents it from maintaining network connectivity for more than 20 minutes in Win 7 networks.

Overall Review: After 18 mos, I discovered that a failure to maintain network connectivity on a Win7 system was a AP software bug, not the fault of a wirelessly-connected laptop as I had assumed. I worked on this for 2 days with the help of Microsoft 2nd-tier support techs and absolutely confirmed that the WAP2000 was not functioning correctly. Replacing it with an old LinkSys WAP54G, configured identically, solved the problem. Cisco's support system was impenetrable. They heap insult on injury by demanding a payment up front to tell them about their own product's problems. After this and a similar experience with a Cisco RV042G router, I won't be buying any more Cisco products.
