Reliable media so far

Verbatim 4.7 GB 16X DVD+R 100 Packs Spindle Disc Model 95098
Verbatim 4.7 GB 16X DVD+R 100 Packs Spindle Disc Model 95098

Pros: Since the demise of Taiyo Yuden, need reliable media for archiving photos, video and sound. Have burned 200 of these so far with very few failures. I always burn at slowest speed that my burner supports (typically 8x).

Cons: Time will tell whether the media is still readable. I have other 15-year-old Verbatim CD-R and DVD-R that still read OK.

Overall Review: Recommend.

Most Critical Review

Very good value in a desktop/server PC

HP Z420 Workstation E5-1607 3.0GHz 4-Cores 16GB DDR3 Quadro NVS 295 500GB HDD
HP Z420 Workstation E5-1607 3.0GHz 4-Cores 16GB DDR3 Quadro NVS 295 500GB HDD

Pros: Looks like new on the inside, if used they did a great job of cleaning it up. There is a "Windows 10 Home For Refurb PCs" product key sticker should one want that. For me, Linux Mint does the job. Lots of SATA ports. Very quiet.

Cons: I want to install 2 extra 3.5" HDDs for a RAID; there are three bays total, but only one extra mounting caddy included, will need to jury rig something for the third drive. Took off 2 eggs for that.

Overall Review: Very good value in a desktop/server PC, but lacks expansion capability.

Works on Linux

StarTech.com ICUSBAUDIO7 7.1 Channels 48KHz USB Interface Stereo Audio Adapter External Sound Card
StarTech.com ICUSBAUDIO7 7.1 Channels 48KHz USB Interface Stereo Audio Adapter External Sound Card

Pros: The description doesn't say yes or no to Linux, so it was a gamble. Purchased for a Lenovo T520 running Ubuntu whose right channel doesn't work, either internal or external speakers. Plugged it in, went to audio settings, hardware tab, selected it, and now have sound in both speakers.

Cons: As far as reliability, none yet. Not sure how one would get 7.1 sound out of it - where would you connect the other speakers?

Overall Review: Recommend.

Good countertop induction cooker

Hamilton Beach 34102 Portable Induction Cooktop
Hamilton Beach 34102 Portable Induction Cooktop

Pros: Next best thing to gas (almost) Heats up quickly and efficiently. I have had it for several years and it works well.

Cons: Very loud fan. On lowest two settings, it "pulses" - turns on heat for a few seconds, turns off for a few seconds. If you are trying to simmer something like a stew, it will boil, stop, boil, stop, etc. Too easy to accidentally push buttons like "lock" and "timer" and no apparent way to cancel, need to reboot.

Overall Review: If buying again, I would look for one with better heat regulation.

Eject mechanism much too flimsy

SilverStone SST-FP510 5.25" to 2.5" and 3.5" Hot-swap Drive Bay Adapter
SilverStone SST-FP510 5.25" to 2.5" and 3.5" Hot-swap Drive Bay Adapter

Pros: Accommodates both 2.5 and 3.5 disks in one 5.25 bay. Has extra USB3 ports.

Cons: I inserted a 2.5" disk, and it got stuck, would not eject with moderate force on the lever. Removed the cover from the unit and manually ejected the disk. If I had used more force on the plastic lever, it would have broken - the whole eject mechanism is cheap plastic. I've used other mobile racks and they are much better. Not as important, but the USB cable is much too short to reach any port on my computer's motherboard in my full tower case, useless for me.

Overall Review: Find another mobile rack.

First two were DOA, replacements OK

CORSAIR Vengeance LP 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Low Profile Desktop Memory Model CML8GX3M2A1600C9
CORSAIR Vengeance LP 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Low Profile Desktop Memory Model CML8GX3M2A1600C9

Pros: It's 8GB of RAM, now I can run VMs. Got 'em cheap, too. (See Cons) No hassle with the RMA.

Cons: First two were DOA, wouldn't pass Memtest86+, locked up. Replacements are working OK so far.
