Buffalo HP-N300 Wireless Router

BUFFALO AirStation HighPower N300 DD-WRT Wireless Router WHR-300HP (Black)
BUFFALO AirStation HighPower N300 DD-WRT Wireless Router WHR-300HP (Black)

Pros: Range, I think I can pick up my wireless 5 miles from here (slight exaggeration maybe). After I set it up I can literally go to my neighborhood mailbox and still have full bars. A good 100+ yards from my yard. Not bad. If you're going to ignore all of the bells and whistles that get in the way, for a simple setup router this things actually really easy to setup and use. Doing the “easy” setup and firmware and such, I managed to get this thing rocking in mere minutes, with comprehensive, thorough setup covering all the bases. Security on this thing can get insane, if you're looking to keep people out of your wireless, this will do it. It comes with all the bells and whistles you would expect, and then some, and can be used in conjunction with other Airstation products so that you can set up repeaters to extend your range, among other things. Not a single item has had an issue connecting to this thing, and signal strength is just top-notch.

Cons: IF you decide to delve into the more complex features of this router, don’t expect an easy fight. Even the “easy” setup was kind of confusing because I lost count on the number of installation and setup instructions, all different or revised in some fashion, Cards with detailed setup information like SSID, key, and security type that simply were incorrect and none of them worked. What information I ended up using was the initial instructions sent, not the updated and included information, not the information on the support website, none of that worked. All the options are there, but don’t expect them easy. Also, no gigabit, something I find disappointing. Loses an egg simply because of frustration factor. I just going to email tech support to verify my intentions and request particular instructions. The tech support was responsive and sent me the correct data with the correct steps I needed. (None of which I found anywhere in any of the data I had access to anywhere).

Overall Review: I will admit, networking is not my strong suit. But, I had high expectations for this router, boasting features galore! I thought I could just jump in and figure it out, I was so wrong! I had an elaborate plan, doing this and that and the other thing, but the confusing instructions turned me off. But, during the time of tinkering, yet another Linksys router died on me so I just ended up blowing it all off and doing the default setup as a rather secure central router. Not at all disappointed with that. I really cant stress how wonderful the signal strength and bandwidth the wireless has on this thing. I haven’t cast aside the higher functions yet however, I see this as a learning opportunity. You can really get down and dirty with your wireless and optimize it using a variety of features available. Sounds fun to me. And for the price, who can argue.

Useful, and faster than expected.

Seagate 1TB Expansion Portable Hard Drive USB 3.0 Model STBX1000100 Black
Seagate 1TB Expansion Portable Hard Drive USB 3.0 Model STBX1000100 Black

Pros: Super Handy! USB 3.0 is faster than I imagined and now I use this as my go-to drive when transferring data from my PC’s, Laptop, and netbook. I’m in the hospital and doctors offices a lot, and this thing makes it easy to keep data consistent. Hooks right up and off you go. I’ve been able to move large amounts of data around without too much waiting time, but I’m amazed pretty easy nowadays.

Cons: First, I don’t like the proprietary cable, that kinda annoys me a little. Besides that, my only gripe is the thing is just rather… plain? I don’t know, shouldn’t a large external drive have some fancy lights, or hover on your desk, or something cool?

Overall Review: It’s been a while since I have updated my external swap drive, mine was some old, terrible, early generation thing that was smaller than some of the USB thumb drives about, slower than most of them as well. This thing changed my mind on external drives, its fast and easy to use, and didn’t cost me over $250. It’s been a while since I’ve had a problem with a Seagate drive as well, so there is that. I have quite a few now, and I have always doubted their reliability compared to say, Western Digital, but yknow what? I haven’t had to RMA a single one yet. I’m gonna mod this thing, at the moment I’m keeping it in the static bag, inside the box, inside the cardboard shipping brace. Doesn’t seem to effect operation or heat. Neat.

Corsair Force GS 240BG SSD Drive

Corsair Force Series GS 2.5" 240GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) CSSD-F240GBGS-BK
Corsair Force Series GS 2.5" 240GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) CSSD-F240GBGS-BK

Pros: Just an amazing drive. My first high capacity SSD drive of gen. 3 and the results are just mind blowing. Price per GB along with the performance makes this a great deal. Corsair has an amazing support site and forums, along with known reliability. Installation was fast and easy, just used acronis to clone my boot drive.

Cons: I can’t really find an issue to have a problem with, SSD is just so amazing and so cheap now. Now I can finally install things other than just my OS onto my main drive.

Overall Review: Even came with a sexy little black 2.5” conversion tray with the corsair logo on it. Red as the devil, I kinda like that. Benchmarked better than any drive I have yet to use. Would definitely recommend this drive for its speed, it seems to make everything just that much faster.

Nice.

Seagate Momentus Thin ST320LT007 320GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 2.5" Internal Notebook Hard Drive
Seagate Momentus Thin ST320LT007 320GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 2.5" Internal Notebook Hard Drive

Pros: Worked right out of the box, no issues whatsoever. Noticeable difference from the 160GB 5400RPM HDD it replaced. Benchmarks well, meeting the netbooks capabilities. Definitely added a little pep to an aging netbook, and the drive is twice the size of the one its replacing. Slim design, drive slid right in with no problems. Decently priced.

Cons: It’s not an SSD drive, but that would be overkill for this silly netbook, as it seems that Its limiting even this drives capabilities.

Overall Review: I stuck this guy into my aging ACER netbook to double my HDD capacity and to add a little pep by going up to 7200RPM. Initialized and formatted just fine, and then went through drive cloning like a champ. Partition extended, and even had to merge two partitions from the old drive into one partition. Noticeably lowered boot time. So far a solid product I would recommend, especially for updating aging netbooks and such.
