Pros: This is an update to my prior review. This StarTech product turned out NOT to be cause of any problems. I did in fact use this product in finally finding the solution to cloning to my Intel SSD. Turns out the first Intel SSD ran hot. With a replacement SSD, I was able to use this product with a USB external enclosure to copy/clone files. I now have it inside a laptop with a mSATA SSD - no problems.
Cons: In my opinion, the enclosure should have holes or some other way to allow for better hea dissipation. SSDs like the Intel 525 will run hot, and despite the manufacturer's claims, this enclosure pretty much seals the circuit board and SSD inside.
Look out for cheap substitute
Pros: The OEM USB Adapter is NOT OEM. It is a cheap replacement that did not work.
Cons: The company does not respond quickly to customer. After saying that I wanted to return and get credit for the cheap substitute USB Adapter that did not work, they said they would send a replacement. When I said that I did not want another cheap substitute, I didn't hear from them.
Overall Review: I have had nothing but good service from Newegg over the years and fully recommend the company. However, I will hesitate to deal with an outside vendor working within the Newegg system, such as 3C Expert.
Update on prior review
Pros: The Intel SSD works well. It requires no special drivers. My first SSD was replaced by Intel after I reported that it overheated. The Intel support was first rate.
Cons: There is nothing bad to say about the Intel SSD. However, be aware that there can be install/recognition problems with some ultrabooks. My HP Spectre XT would not boot from the Intel 525. It took a recent BIOS update (and no help from HP Support) to finally reslove this issue. Be aware also that this SSD heats up more than others under intense usage (example: cloning 40GB operating system/software). Good ventilation is needed, but the temperature drops quickly at the end of an intense operation and there is no problem at all in normal use. As for any needed mSATA-to-SATA needed to put the 525 into a 2.5 laptop setting, or USB external for cloning op system, the Intel SSD does not have any problem. It works like any other drive with standard drivers. My Startech hardware worked well, although I do think that the enclosure needs some holes to help dissipate built-up heat.
Overall Review: Intel will be the force in newer, faster technologies. The 525 is a leading-edge product. The warranty is great with Intel support/knowledge behind it. Despite my problems getting it to work in my ultrabook - no fault of Intel - I'm glad I bought this SSD. Why did the first SSD run so hot? Don't know, but Intel resolved the issue.
Worst Newegg Experience
This vendor sent a cheap generic version of what was listed as an OEM product. Worse yet, what they send did not work at all. The company offered to send a replacement generic product. When I refused this option, the company stopped responding to my emails. The company is also slow in responding, at least 24 hours to respond to each request.
