Very quick, little computer
Pros: Very fast, compact, easy
Cons: Much noisier than expected, power adapter the worst shape ever
Overall Review: This is a beautiful, fast, easy computer. It's a thing that's very easy to love. However, it's much noisier than I expected. My wife has had the i5 version for about a year and it's totally silent. This one has a CPU fan that really gets to spinning when the computer get running. I was recompiling many packages in my system last night and the whine of the fan kept me awake. If you want a really quiet NUC, get the i5 version. The power brick is the worse design ever. Who the F comes up with these things? It's long and narrow, but when you plug it into a power strip, it takes up one socket, and blocks two others! All they had to do was rotate the plug 90 degrees and it would only take up one socket. Sheesh!
Broke the first time I used it
Pros: Looks nice and provides good protection to the laptop.
Cons: Very poorly made.
Overall Review: The very first time I used it I put the laptop in it, try to zip it up, and the stitching holding in the zipper ripped out. I don't know if I want to send it back since I got it free with my laptop purchase. Not worth the hassle.
All problems fixed by Tomato!
Pros: Great signal strength, adjustable power.
Cons: Built-in firmware stinks.
Overall Review: I wrote a review condemning this router, but taking other reviewers' opinions to heart, I install Tomato firmware, and now I love this thing! Tomato rocks. Now the firmware matches the hardware in quality.
Software Sucks
Pros: Don't know
Cons: Firmware is terrible! No dynamic DNS setting. Impossible to change network from 192.168.11.0 (but you can change the LAN IP address to, e.g., 192.168.1.1. Go figure.) Changing a single setting requires restarting the device, which takes between 15 and 90 seconds each time. Fully configuring the device takes hours!
Overall Review: The killer for me is no dynamic DNS setting. I have to access a server behind the device, and since I can't get a static IP address, I must be able to set the hostname dynamically. I've used 3 other routers and all have the capability of setting the hostname whenever the IP address changes. This is rediculous.
