Not ready for Windows 7

GIGABYTE GA-73PVM-S2H LGA 775 NVIDIA GeForce 7100 HDMI Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
GIGABYTE GA-73PVM-S2H LGA 775 NVIDIA GeForce 7100 HDMI Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: Lots of connections; easy to work with.

Cons: I tried this motherboard out on my HTPC in Windows 7. Everything installed fine and I didn't suspect any problems, until I connected it to the TV. If either the HDMI or DVI cables were connected, it failed to boot. After a lot of searching and various drivers and tweaks, I gave up and went back to Vista. Works fine here. Except for HD. Sure, the video works fine when running a movie in 1080p, but the audio started getting behind.

Overall Review: Overall it's a decent motherboard; it's just a few issues I'm having with it. I'm going to get a new video card to fix the HD issue, and the board is fine on Vista.

Most Critical Review

SATA connection broke

StarTech.com HSB100SATBK 5.25in Trayless Hot Swap Mobile Rack for 3.5in Hard Drive - Internal SATA Backplane Enclosure

Pros: Worked well for a few months.

Cons: After 6 months, I went to change power supplies for a graphics card upgrade. I noticed the SATA connection kept coming off and then realized it was broken. A small bit of plastic broke, leaving the enclosure of the pins stuck in the cable. I came back to read the comments here on Newegg and saw a few others had the same problem. It was only $30, so not a huge loss, but it's still annoying.

Good headphones

Logitech Wireless Gaming Headset G930 with 7.1 Surround Sound, Wireless Headphones with Microphone

Pros: Nice looking headphones. Lots of functionality and the sound is great. I bought these mainly due to having metal in the headset since I tend to break the ear pieces after a year of use. I'm hopeful that won't happen here.

Cons: Bit tight on my head. I'm hoping that goes away the longer I have them.

Overall Review: The cord to plug these in is an annoying spot. It points down from the left speaker in to my shoulder blade. Hopefully these will run almost 100% wireless though if I can remember to keep them charged, so the cord won't matter much.

Hate ASUS

ASUS A8V 939 VIA K8T800 Pro ATX AMD Motherboard
ASUS A8V 939 VIA K8T800 Pro ATX AMD Motherboard

Pros: It's got nice green light to show if the board has power. I'm afraid I can't say much else.

Cons: Where to begin.. I've done many upgrades before and never had so many problems as I have with this board. The first mistake I made was my own, I admit, but the documentation had nothing in the way of troubleshooting. The ASUS website may as well be a blank page. Secondly, after I did manage to get everything working, I used the ASUS Update to flash the BIOS. It failed half way through. I tried again, failed again. No big deal, I thought, I'll just flash it back to the original settings. bzzzt. Mobo is dead now. Have flashed it a dozen times, read websites, etc. I've disconnected everything and still nothing works. The board powers up, nothing happens. No beeps, nothing on the monitor. It appears to have just died.

Overall Review: I won't ever buy from ASUS again. I was burned once before from them, but I thought I'd give 'em a try again since everyone likes ASUS. The only joy this board has given me is being able to write up a nasty review about them on this website. Stay away from the board and the company. Or at least, stay away from their non-working flash program. I now look forward to dealing with their RMA process. Joy.
