Great budget Mobo

MSI H81M-P33 LGA 1150 Intel H81 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
MSI H81M-P33 LGA 1150 Intel H81 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: - Works great

Cons: - Documentation was sorely lacking, this was my first time buying an MSI board, but I've used their other products with great success. I was a little disappointed to find that the supporting documentation didn't really explain too much. I had some information on the correct way to install the processor, ram, etc. But did not have a map of the board with information on which things to install where. As a result, it took some time to manually review the board and the labels placed around the various pins and connectors to determine where to install various parts.

Overall Review: One issue I ran into was that I had a fan which could be powered by usb and by power supply. I ran out of "fan power" slots on the motherboard (I had 2 case fans, mobo only has 1 cpu fan and 1 sysfan slot, so I was out 1 sysfan), but I noticed that there were 2 "usb_pwr" sets of pins, both of which had a small black plasic piece of two of those 3 pins. I removed that black plastic piece, which turns out, you can't do. Apparently those plastic things are essentially resistors, which control the current flowing through the USB power. DO NOT REMOVE THEM OR YOUR BOARD WILL NOT WORK. Their documentation did not even mention them. If I threw that plastic thing away I would have been out of luck. All the 1-star/2-star reviews saying they were getting "over current" warnings, that's why. Don't learn this lesson the hard way, leave those usb_pwr pins alone.

Fairly quiet, reasonably fast disk

HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS500012872SN (0S03835) 5TB 7200 RPM 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Retail Packaging

Pros: I ordered two of these for use in an entertainment center. I'm happy with mine.

Cons: When I received the two I ordered, once was a little messed up. Packaging and all that was fine, but the disk instantly starting running at 100% utilization and slowed the whole system down. Disk wouldn't even format. I sent it back to Newegg and the one they replaced it with works fine.

This stuff is amazing

Cons: - None

Overall Review: This is the only thermal compound I use.

Works great

Samsung 250GB 750 EVO SSD SATA III 2.5" MZ-750250BW
Samsung 250GB 750 EVO SSD SATA III 2.5" MZ-750250BW

Pros: - It's very fast, fresh Windows 10 build fully boots up in about 15 seconds.

Cons: - None

Overall Review: You should buy one. I picked this up for about $69, hard to beat that price for the performance.

Hard to beat for the price

Rosewill CHALLENGER ATX Mid-Tower Gaming PC Computer Case, Expansion Ready: Internal 3.5" Bays & External 5.25" Bays, 3 Pre-installed Fans with Side Fan Mount Option
Rosewill CHALLENGER ATX Mid-Tower Gaming PC Computer Case, Expansion Ready: Internal 3.5" Bays & External 5.25" Bays, 3 Pre-installed Fans with Side Fan Mount Option

Pros: - Solid build - Simple and straight forward to insert/install drives (hdd/ssd) - love the screwless design for the hdd's.

Cons: - Doesn't have all stand-off positions for my mATX motherboard, bottom right corner (center of case) of motherboard is not attached to the case, but the rest of the board is. Stability isn't a huge issue but I needed to put my fingers under that corner of the board when I was attaching things to it. Hence, minus 1 egg. - One of the removable front sections bent after installing a cd/dvd drive (the section right below the drive), I wasn't rough with the insertion of the drive but was unable to get it to sit correctly after that. I was able to remove that piece and replace it with the piece I removed for the drive, which went in without issue. Likely my fault during installation, so just FYI be careful with those, they are a little flimsy.

Overall Review: I would definitely recommend the case. I picked it up for $40, can't beat that for the quality. The front fan (with the blue LED) has a power cable with a slot for USB power, and with a 4 - pin connector for the power supply. I only used the power supply's power as I didn't have any more USB power slots on the motherboard, which works just fine. I assume if you use the USB power connector you'll have the ability to control the fan through the mobo, but for me that wasn't a requirement.

Simple and Straightforward

EVGA 430 W1 100-W1-0430-KR 80+ WHITE 430W Power Supply

Pros: - Works as expected, no issues. - Reacts quickly when detecting over-current conditions

Cons: - None

Overall Review: Only been in use for 3-ish days at this point, no problems. If that changes I will come back to update the review and reduce the rating. I have an MSI mATX motherboard I decided to use in a budget build; I removed one of the very small plastic pieces MSI puts on some of their USB power pins to reduce current, not knowing it was needed (MSI's documentation was lacking quite severely for that mobo, but that is unrelated to this review). I powered on the machine and it instantly shut down. I swapped out the power supply for another one I had and was able to determine there was an over-current condition being detected and the board was shutting down to prevent damage. Further research determined I needed to reinstall the plastic piece, and once I did that every ran perfectly.
