Just an internal hard drive in an enclosure.
Pros: Decent transfer speeds compared to other external USB hard drives. Plug & Play - No software/drivers required for Windows 2000 and above.
Cons: It has a power-saving feature (Shutting down after being idle for about 30 seconds to a minute) that causes noticeable lag when it needs to be powered up again and used. USB cable is a little too short.
Overall Review: I find it interesting that this is not a native external hard drive. LaCie uses HDs from the more popular manufacturers, in my case a Seagate ST3250823A (I've heard reports from others with different hard drives in them), and just encompasses those into their own enclosures. Then again, this is my first external HD and I'm not really familiar with how lesser known brands are. Contrary to what I've read elsewhere, this drive doesn't get very hot. The enclosure itself is only warm to the touch while copying large amounts of files onto it. There were a few cases where the hard drive stopped in the middle of transferring files and I had to reconnect the USB cable to get it working again (and restart the transfer from the file it stopped on), but it may have been from my Windows installation (still had old motherboard drivers being loaded). I've since done a fresh install and the problem no longer appears.
