Write=protect tab loss

CORSAIR 2GB Secure Digital (SD) Flash Card Model CMFSD133-2GB
CORSAIR 2GB Secure Digital (SD) Flash Card Model CMFSD133-2GB

Pros: Good card speed. It's been reliable thus far... except as noted in "other thoughts"

Cons: Somewhat flimsy, but many are in this price range.

Overall Review: After 7 months usage, the write-protect tab came off. The case was also loose around that area and I thought I'd have to go through the whole RMA process. Thankfully, I remembered the old trick of simply taping over the write-protect slots on VCR tapes and with a small piece of tape, it was saved. Perhaps others might be able to salvage their cards this way if their tab comes off.

Finally bit the dust...

CORSAIR 2GB Secure Digital (SD) Flash Card Model CMFSD133-2GB
CORSAIR 2GB Secure Digital (SD) Flash Card Model CMFSD133-2GB

Pros: Worked well for a while...

Cons: Case finally disintigrated and the card began to corrupt data more and more often. I had originally fixed the missing write-protect tab with tape, but the rest of the card began to break apart. I nursed it through a few more cycles, but it finally started corrupting data.

Overall Review: I wouldn't advise anyone to buy this card. The case is far too flimsy for even careful use and disintegrates, leaving bits of blue plastic jammed into your camera or card reader. I was fortunate in being able to remove the bits... you might not be...

Chipset apparently overheating

GIGABYTE GA-M61PME-S2P AM2+/AM2 NVIDIA GeForce 6100 Micro ATX AMD Motherboard
GIGABYTE GA-M61PME-S2P AM2+/AM2 NVIDIA GeForce 6100 Micro ATX AMD Motherboard

Pros: Decent, cheap board with all that one needs to get a budget system up and running. Handles a wide range of CPUs. The on-board video was adequate for a basic system, though I run a cheap AMD card instead of the built-in video It ran flawlessly for several months.

Cons: Limited slots for memory and SATA drives. I rarely overclock anything I build, but this one seems to lack the options necessary if you wanted to go that route. Not that big a deal in my case. I'm one to take glitches and whatnot as a challenge, but this board would probably annoy most users at some point.

Overall Review: It appears that the chipset has begun suffering from overheating. The board locked up and wouldn't POST when I tried to reboot in the last couple of days. I've checked all the usual suspects and swapped out most of the components with no luck. Leaving it off for 10-15 minutes after shutting down usually does the trick, but that's ridiculous. I made sure the area around the chips was clear for airflow and just decided to aim a trusty old fan at them. Seems to have worked. I leave the case open anyway to allow for swapping drive set-ups, so it's not as it it's in a confined space.

Follow-up ... then it died

SUPER TALENT 4GB Flash Drive (USB2.0 Portable) USB ALUMI-4GB-DH-S
SUPER TALENT 4GB Flash Drive (USB2.0 Portable) USB ALUMI-4GB-DH-S

Pros: Replacement seems fine... just as the original did...

Cons: Pain in the rear to have to RMA, but...

Overall Review: NewEgg received the bad unit and got the new one back to me within a week. Love these folks... I'll make sure I don't use it for anything critical, leaving that to the Kingston thumb drives I have. Still, not a bad value for simply moving stuff around and whatnot.

... and then, it died

SUPER TALENT 4GB Flash Drive (USB2.0 Portable) USB ALUMI-4GB-DH-S
SUPER TALENT 4GB Flash Drive (USB2.0 Portable) USB ALUMI-4GB-DH-S

Pros: It was cheap, it was compact, it wasn't loaded with that silly encryption software (not that I don't use it on some other drives, it's just not always necessary), it had reasonably fast transfer speeds...

Cons: Then, it died. Magically turned into a brick and wasn't recognized as a USB device by any of several different machines. Fortunately, I had no irreplaceable data on it

Overall Review: I've had to return so few of the parts I've bought from New Egg over the years, the RMA thing really is a pain. I've sent it back for a replacement and we'll see how this goes. Perhaps I'll just look for Kingstons on sale from here out...

Excellent value

SUPER TALENT 4GB Flash Drive (USB2.0 Portable) USB ALUMI-4GB-DH-S
SUPER TALENT 4GB Flash Drive (USB2.0 Portable) USB ALUMI-4GB-DH-S

Pros: Excellent value for a 4GB stick. Speed is more than adequate to my needs. It appears as fast as most of my other sticks, including Kingston and Sandisk models. There's no security software, which is how I wanted it. Depending upon your intentions, all sticks don't need the security features to slow down loading. It's also quite slim and easily fits where others might not.

Cons: The cap doesn't have any retention method and the unit's lanyard hole won't allow for key chains. Neither of those are cons for me, but might be for some. I can't imagine slamming a memory stick around on a key chain...

Overall Review: If you simply need a small, reasonably fast stick without the extra security software, this is a true bargain. I got it on a Shell Shocker offer with free shipping and it was an even greater value.
