A Solid Choice in Switching

TP-LINK TL-SG1008 Unmanaged 10/100/1000Mbps 8-Port Gigabit Desktop/Rackmountable Switch, Metal case, Power-Saving
TP-LINK TL-SG1008 Unmanaged 10/100/1000Mbps 8-Port Gigabit Desktop/Rackmountable Switch, Metal case, Power-Saving

Pros: The TP-LINK 2012-0001 is a fantastic switch for those looking to set up a small gigabit network. My home network currently utilizes a 10/100Mb switch that has served me well over the years. For testing purposes I decided to use the TP-LINK switch in its place and was very pleasantly surprised. The cabling I installed a few years back is CAT5e with terminations I made myself so I was expecting some performance issues in the form of noise and collisions since a few of my cable runs travel as far as 75 meters. All of the devices I have hard wired into my network are capable of 1Gb speeds but because of the 10/100 switch I utilize the theoretical fastest speeds I can obtain are 200Mbs. I was pleasantly surprised to get 1Gb performance out of my network with no signal issues whatsoever when I placed the TP-LINK switch into my network. All of my devices are now utilizing their full potential on the network with no issues encountered with my existing wiring and terminations. I am very pleased with the performance and simplicity of this switch and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a fast and reliable solution to upgrading an existing CAT5e network. I’m also a teacher and moved into a brand new building this year with a new network infrastructure. When I moved into my classroom the network was not quite complete so I grabbed the TP-LINK switch from home to temporarily get part of my classroom up and running. The new network is gigabit rated and as I expected the TP-LINK switch worked flawlessly alongside the CISCO equipment in place until the network installers could finally finish my room. This is very handle little switch to have laying around.

Cons: There is nothing negative about this switch that I need to report on. It’s a simple, 8 port, unmanaged gigabit switch that works as advertised. I actually tried to find something in the documentation, design and performance to report as a con, but again, this switch is rock-solid in every way.

Overall Review: I worked this switch hard for over a 5 week period before writing this review and in all that time I noted nothing of interest in negative performance. I have a home server that streams video to any and all devices in my home. At times there can be as many as 4 computers streaming from the server. With my 10/100 switch I would sometimes notice a glitch here and there while viewing a video, especially HD 1920x1080 videos. With the TP-LINK switch in place these occasional glitches completely disappeared. The switch now has a permanent home in my home network. I will highly recommend TP-LINK products and start using them for my networking needs from now on.

Not very good

Gyration GYT8101 GYROTRANSPORT Air Mouse - 1GB
Gyration GYT8101 GYROTRANSPORT Air Mouse - 1GB

Pros: Makes presentations on projectors easier to navigate.

Cons: Thank goodness I got this free after rebates. It's a pain to get connected and when it does it is spotty at best. If I get over 10 feet away from my laptop I consistently lose signal. I've tried this unit on Windows XP SP2 and Windows 7 Professional. Same results with both operating systems.

Overall Review: I would recommend that you stay away from this unit. It'll just make you look like a fool when trying to present to an audience.

Good RAM

G.SKILL Ripjaws 4 Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR4 2133 (PC4 17000) Memory Kit Model F4-2133C15D-8GRR
G.SKILL Ripjaws 4 Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR4 2133 (PC4 17000) Memory Kit Model F4-2133C15D-8GRR

Pros: The CAS is high but that's why the price is lower. I'm using this RAM in the following motherboard: - ASUS PRIME B250M-A LGA 1151 Intel B250 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard (N82E16813132947)

Cons: Why is RAM so expensive? I've been going through my purchase history since 2003 with Newegg and RAM has never been priced higher. What gives?

Overall Review: Like I said, I would have rather had RAM in the 9 CAS range but I had to stay within a budget on my recent build.

Good card - horrible price

GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 1050 2GB GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 ATX Graphics Card GV-N1050OC-2GD
GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 1050 2GB GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 ATX Graphics Card GV-N1050OC-2GD

Pros: The card is rock solid. I've always had good luck with Gigabyte video cards and I will continue to purchase them. This card does not require a PCI-E power connector.

Cons: The price. There is no reason this card should cost so much. No one mining for bit-coins is going to use this card. The price has been inflated because of the hype surrounding mining. I won't knock an egg off for this, but don't think for a minute we system builders are happy with this pricing.

Overall Review: I would have rather had a Ti with 4GB but the price ... sheesh!

Windows 10 Spyware Edition - Yeah!

Microsoft Windows 10 Home, 64-bit, DVD - OEM
Microsoft Windows 10 Home, 64-bit, DVD - OEM

Pros: Ugh, what can I say? I had a friend who wanted a new system built. The system I built included a 7th generation Intel CPU and therefore *required* Windows 10.

Cons: I absolutely hate Windows 10, from and end-user and PC technician perspective. And to think, I thought Vista was bad. This makes Vista look good!

Overall Review: The person I built the system for does not need Hyper-V or Domain support so there was no reason to go to the Pro version. If you do not plan on using virtual machines, or logging into a domain, all you need is the home version.

EVGA power supplies have always been good to me

EVGA 500 B1 100-B1-0500-KR 80+ BRONZE 500W Includes FREE Power On Self Tester Power Supply
EVGA 500 B1 100-B1-0500-KR 80+ BRONZE 500W Includes FREE Power On Self Tester Power Supply

Pros: Nice solid power supply. Plenty of power connectors for everything you could imagine throwing into a PC case (even a floppy drive!). The power supply includes a master power switch on the back as well.

Cons: None - good quality power supply

Overall Review: This not a modular or even semi-modular power supply. This is old-school so you'll need to find an area to tuck away the connectors/wires you are not using. Not a minus, just letting other potential buyers know.

They took care of my problem quickly

My computer arrived with a defective DVD drive. The day I informed them of the issue they sent me out a replacement drive that worked perfectly. I recommend this seller. Thank you for your quick support with my issue.

They seem to be fibbing

I received a shipping confirmation from Newegg on 01/04/12 with a tracking number. As of 01/10/12 the tracking number shows that USPS has not even picked up the package yet. It seems many others are having shipping issues with this company as well. I will be avoiding 1SaleDay from now on and and probably Newegg MarketPlace in general due to this kind of activity being allowed in it. Sellers such as this and MarketPlace are going to hurt Newegg in the long run. I used to trust Newegg 100%, but not any longer. Such a shame.
