Intel motherboard BOXDQ35JOE
Pros: Nice motherboard. I purchased a micron memory kit from Newegg and had no memory compatibility problems. The memory controller chip seems to run pretty warm. I installed a case fan to cool this down. Both chipset ICs have heat sinks. Easy to set up. Limited expansion slots...check specs carefully before you buy to see if it meets your needs. Even without the fan it runs 20 degrees under its threshold temp in an average room. I had no problems getting video and audio to work well with windows xp pro. I did update the bios. DVI and VGA onboard video seems to work fine for business and web work. Plays videos without hanging (4 G ram and 2.4 ghz dual core processor in mine) Has an external SATA connector with cord and socket. Both AC 97 and HD audio connectors.
Cons: Other than needing a case fan to cool the chipset, none.
Overall Review: I bought this board for the Intel quality. It seems to be a well made board. Somewhat limited expansion slots, but if you know exactly what you need and this supports it go for it. So far I am satisfied. I do not intend to ever expand. I wanted a medium to low end system for home office, and this seems fine for that. This board seems to run fast with XP pro and an intel dual core 2.4 GHz cpu.
antec fan
Pros: Works pretty well. Very slow fan speed in quiet mode. If you are looking for quiet this fan has a mixed behavior. See cons.
Cons: In anything other than quiet mode there is an annoying low level pulsation noise as the fan rotates, may be related to the bearings or the the magnetic pulses as the motor operates. Annoying at any speed other than the slowest quiet setting.
Intel SSD
Pros: Its fast, my windows 7 rating went to near maximum on the hard drive data transfer rating. It is easy to install. No problems. Cloning software is available on the intel website to move your existing hard drive to the ssd.
Cons: price, less capacity than my previous drive.
Overall Review: If you want a fast system drive and the loss of capacity does not matter then this drive is great!!!!
vga cable
Pros: Great cable for the price. Having the audio cable onboard is a big plus. I use mine to give presentations in a classroom using an LCD projector with speakers. No apparent loss in signal quality using an HP notebook pc with this.
Cons: None
Shuttle SG31G2
Pros: Nice form factor. Easy to build a nice system with this barebones system and case. Very quiet. The ICE cooling system works well.
Cons: I was very happy with my system until the onboard video developed a problem. The DVI connection would turn the LCD monitor on and off rapidly between on and power saving "off" mode. The VGA continued to work. I returned the system and built a different computer with the other components. Just got a bad one I guess. It was not a monitor problem. The same monitor works fine with me new system.
Overall Review: Powerful small system as long as it worked.
Antec NSK3480 Case
Pros: Very small case. Attractive. Very quiet fans on power supply and rear case. Rear case fan is 3 speed controled by switch. Saves a lot of desktop space, only about 14 inches x 14 x 8 Both HD and AC97 connectors for front audio jacks. Silicon mounting system for hard drive keeps it quiet. There is enough space to mount a Zalman CNPS8000 "silent" heat pipe cpu cooler. Be sure to mount the backing plate on the motherboard before installing it in the case!
Cons: Low interior space makes mounting components tricky. The power supply and 5.25 drive areas are partitioned off from the rest of the case. The power supply has cables in abundance, in fact there are many more power connectors than you can really use in a case this small. Cable routing is tricky. I actually cut off one set of standard drive cables and capped the ends with insulated terminators to make the wire bundle smaller. Hard drives mount in rather unusual locations. Case floor or the lower 5.25 bay (no adapter needed, mounts to the bottom of the bay with silicon grommets and special screws) If you mount a drive in the lower 5.25 bay you can only have one optical drive. If you mount the HD on the floor of the case you will block your PCI slot on the motherboard. This was not an issue for me since I planned to use the onboard video and only one optical drive.
Overall Review: My case arrived with minor damage to the support/mount pins behind the front case bezel. It is plastic. The rest is very solidly built steel. It looked as if someone dropped the box rather hard in shipment. This did not affect the functionality of the front bezel, it still clipped on OK just slightly loose because of the loss of the aligning pins behind the cover.
