TERRIBLE, TERRIBLE speakers (updated: not so terrible anymore)

Polk Audio R50 Two-Way Floorstanding Speaker (Single Unit) - Black
Polk Audio R50 Two-Way Floorstanding Speaker (Single Unit) - Black

Pros: The build quality is pretty good. The fit-and-finish is good

Cons: horrendous sound. Muffled highs, lack of mid-range, muffled bass. Update: After I fixed a solder point in the crossover of each speaker, sound has dramatically improved. There is still a good bit of harshness in the highs, but the mid-range is "night and day" better, and the low-end much more defined.

Overall Review: I would not recommend these speakers to anyone. Having owned many Polk Audio products, I was expecting more. These speakers can only be described as AWFUL. I got them on sale, and that was paying WAY TOO MUCH for them. I will put them up for sale, perhaps someone likes the way they sound. UPDATE: Having heard a similar pair of Polk R50s at a co-worker's home, which sounded significantly better. I investigated. In both speakers I have (sequentially 5 units apart per serial numbers) there was a faulty solder joint in the crossover. This may have been a manufacturing defect, but perhaps due to rough handling in transit (speaker boxes were substantially damaged by UPS, but speakers appeared intact). I re-soldered the defects, and the sound made an instant and significant improvement. At this point, I am going to keep the speakers, as they now fit the parameters for which they were originally purchased. At this point, I would recommend them to others for purchase, especially if you get them on sale and your listening room is relatively small.

Most Critical Review

Interesting, but flaky board.

MSI 760GMA-P34 (FX) AM3+ AMD 760G USB 3.0 Micro ATX AMD Motherboard
MSI 760GMA-P34 (FX) AM3+ AMD 760G USB 3.0 Micro ATX AMD Motherboard

Pros: Ran okay, while it worked. Lots of connections (8x SATA, USB 3.0, etc). Well thought-out.

Cons: Board failed 48 hours after installation in client's computer. No SATA cables included. This was probably an oversight of MSI's quality control during product packaging.

Overall Review: I would not recommend this board for a serious build, regardless of how small your budget might be. There are better products out there for certain. I suspect the failure is a defective capacitor. Board was also shipped from Newegg's Memphis warehouse, and the factory packaging was thrown into the bottom of the box, a bit of packaging material above. Also, MSI packaging leaves much to be desired as there is no padding between the bottom of their box, and the board (like on Gigabyte, AsRock, and Asus products). This poor packaging may have been a cause of the board's premature failure. Newegg, once again, has come through, and is replacing the board. I have dealt with Newegg since 2001, and they have always proven themselves to be a very ethical organization. They might not necessarily be the least expensive choice, but their commitment to customer service and their products is second-to-none. It would be even better if they finally fix the issues they have at their Memphis area warehouse concerning appropriate packaging as items received from their other facilities are always packaged appropriately. I hope that managers are Newegg actually read these reviews as the incompetence of their shipping staff in Memphis is costing them money in damaged items and returns, not to mention taking a hit in customer satisfaction. This issue needs to be immediately addressed, yet has not been for many years.

Outstanding product

GIGABYTE GA-970A-DS3P (rev. 2.0) AM3+ AMD 970 USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard
GIGABYTE GA-970A-DS3P (rev. 2.0) AM3+ AMD 970 USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard

Pros: There are none - NONE at all.

Cons: Item did not work, post, or do anything. It was bought as a replacement for a client's computer. The board fried the CPU on initial boot-up. I don't know what is happening with Gigabyte, but their quality control seems to have severely slipped.

Overall Review: I have been building microcomputers since 1988, and in these 28 years, this has been the worst board (worst than PC-chips boards that never worked, but also never ruined the CPU) I have ever had the misfortune of using.

Very, very impressed
