Four eggs due to bios problem...

ASUS A8N5X 939 NVIDIA nForce4 ATX AMD Motherboard
ASUS A8N5X 939 NVIDIA nForce4 ATX AMD Motherboard

Pros: Stable, easy to configure.

Cons: Bios problem-don't use Ma*tor SATA drives as boot drive with this board!

Overall Review: Good mobo overall. Typical Asus stability, easy to configure, update bios ect. I had one huge problem with this board however. When building my system, I installed a ma*tor 200GB SATA drive as my boot drive. Immeadiately after installing the OS I ran into an interesting phenomenom, boot times varied a lot, sometimes a quick boot, sometimes minutes to enter Windows. The second day after builing the system, on a restart the system refused to boot...the bios reported no sysytem disk found! Sure enough, entered setup, and the boot drive was gone. Had to clear the CMOS to get the board to detect the drive again. I checked the Asus website and found a forum entry with the same problem. Apparently Ma*tor SATA drives are a no-go as boot drives with this board, even using the latest bios (0401). N^rton ghost solved my problem, as I cloned drive C: to my WD320GB SATA drive D:, swapped SATA connections to the board, and edited the registry in windows to change the drive letters.

Excellent super combo drive

LG Black 6X BD-ROM 16X DVD-ROM 40X CD-ROM SATA Internal Combo LG Blu-ray/HD DVD-ROM & 16X DVD±R DVD Burner Model GGC-H20L
LG Black 6X BD-ROM 16X DVD-ROM 40X CD-ROM SATA Internal Combo LG Blu-ray/HD DVD-ROM & 16X DVD±R DVD Burner Model GGC-H20L

Pros: Drive plays Blu-ray and HD DVD flawlessly on my system with the bundled software. As others have noted the drive is very quiet. Less than 50% of CPU used on my Athlon X2 6000+.

Cons: None so far.

Overall Review: I'm running Vista 32 on an NForce 6 mobo, no problems at all, the rumors that SATA optical drives don't work with this chipset may just be rumors. I installed the bundled software and then applied the latest Power DVD patch (12.08.2008). The software appears to be full featured, surround sound is supported, full 1080p with HDCP compliant components. The full suite of apps includes disc burning and video editing software, every user may not need to install all of the apps, you can customize the install however. The drive arrived with the most current firmware, the update tool will be useful as the studios change the BD+ DRM protection scheme regularly. Got the drive at a sweet price via the Newegg black Friday sale, as always shipping was quick and free. Good job Newegg!

Superb HD Display

46" 1080p LCD HDTV
46" 1080p LCD HDTV

Pros: Fantastic HD display. 1080i content from my cable provider looks fantastic. Color, tint and brightness were well tuned out of the box. Three HDMI inputs. Menu options are simple and easy to access. Bright backlight with no visible bleeding. I did not purchase from Newegg, got this from direct from the manufacturer.

Cons: SD content does not look that great. SD content looks...fuzzy...I guess is the way to describe it. This knocked the rating down to 4 eggs.

Overall Review: Overall well worth the money. Best suited for those with lots of HD channels. I will be purchasing an HD DVD player next month and will review the display again when I have more 1080p content to play on it.

The best graphics card I have ever owned

ASUS GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 SLI Support Video Card EN8800GTS/HTDP/640M
ASUS GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 SLI Support Video Card EN8800GTS/HTDP/640M

Pros: Stunning image quality at high framerates. What more could you want?

Cons: Just waiting for Vista drivers from Nvidia and Asus, not exactly a con yet.

Overall Review: Big card fits in my easily in my Thermaltake Tsunami case. I've seen some reviews that recommend setting the card's fan speed to 100%. In my opinion this is not needed. Use the smart cooling feature in Smartdoctor, the card will run whisper quiet until you put a load on it.

Performance per dollar champ

SAPPHIRE Radeon X850XT 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card 100106-RD
SAPPHIRE Radeon X850XT 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card 100106-RD

Pros: Very fast card! Runs the latest games with max settings.

Cons: Runs a little hot. Doesn't require any special cooling however.

Overall Review: What a nice card for the price! I upgraded from a 9800 Pro, and the performance improvement is huge! Have been running FEAR and HL2 so far at max settings with no problem at all. This card does run hot. It "idles" at about 41C. The cooling fan seems to exhaust enough heat to prevent overheating. Five eggs for this card. Like I said, a great value at a price you will not be able to approach at any brick and mortar.

Very cool case...inside and out!

Thermaltake Tsunami VA3000BWA Black Aluminum ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
Thermaltake Tsunami VA3000BWA Black Aluminum ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Pros: Very good cooling, quiet fans, LED's are cool, nice design.

Cons: Had to remove plastic PCI card holder assembly...a trivial matter really, just four screws to remove.

Overall Review: This is an excellent case. Very nice overall design. In particular I really liked the HD cage, it features huge thumbscrews, and nice rubber vibration dampeners around the screws. Should add to HD life. The fan on the window side does a good job keeping the CPU cool. Played F.E.A.R. with settings on max for over an hour, CPU temp only went up 8 degrees during that time. Plenty of USB ports, nice LED's on fans and case. Pair with the Thermalt@ke VA3000 500 watt PS, you won't be dissapointed.
