Too Powerful? Future Proofing My Gaming Hardware

AMD Ryzen 9 3rd Gen - RYZEN 9 3900X Matisse (Zen 2) 12-Core 3.8 GHz (4.6 GHz Max Boost) Socket AM4 105W 100-100000023BOX Desktop Processor
AMD Ryzen 9 3rd Gen - RYZEN 9 3900X Matisse (Zen 2) 12-Core 3.8 GHz (4.6 GHz Max Boost) Socket AM4 105W 100-100000023BOX Desktop Processor

Pros: -Super powerful CPU--24 logical cores? wowza. Haven't been able to get this baby past 45% use 8) -Can be relatively quiet under low load. -The stock fan that comes with it is colorful and awesome and customizable to match any other RGB in your case (with the right software--I use the MSI Dragon software).

Cons: -The controller for the fan speed when overclocking is obnoxious. Best not to go with auto overclock and just adjust your voltages manually.

Overall Review: Let me be more clear. This thing is super powerful, and without manually overclocking it I was able to hit past 4.2 GHz. My issue was that I wasn't aware of 2 settings on my mobo--and I don't know if it is card specific or what, but this seems to be a general problem with many AM4 Ryzen CPUs. There are 2 main overclock settings in the BIOS--Performance Override and Core Performance Boost. With stock settings, the CPU was ramping up to 4.2GHz at IDLE. I checked the bios and it took me forever to realize that the Performance Override was separate from the Core Performance boost, and at stock settings the PO was off and the CPB was on. This led to a wacky overclocking that had issues with the temperature sensor on the chip where the chip would drop 10degC over 5 or so seconds and then in a blink of an eye it's up 10-15degC again (an issue I believe with either the temp source or the controlling algorithm they use). So then the fan would be ramping up and down constantly, which made it impossible to focus on anything without getting irritated as it would get so loud I would hear it through my headphones. Anyway, I turned on X-AMP to OC my RAM, and turned off the PO and CPB and now I don't get that issue. Still wish I knew why I can't get my CPU to idle when my computer is idle. The thing sticks at 3.8GHZ while just staring at a black desktop, no apps running or anything else going on. The chipset drivers don't work with the AMD power profiles that you can choose from--and it seems like windows just does not care at all about whether or not their power profiles are adjustable at all. Whether that's a windows issue, an AMD issue, or I'm just a d*****s, it really shouldn't be this difficult to keep get my computer to operate as any other normal computer would. Either way, this thing is a beast. Paired with 3600Mhz ram, a 5700 XT, and an x570 mobo, I can plow through 1080p games with 100-200 fps.

Most Critical Review

Probably a good product when it works, but it arrived DOA

GIGABYTE GP-P850GM 850 W ATX 12V v2.31 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Full Modular Active (>0.9 typical) PFC Power Supply

Pros: -haha

Cons: -DOA. Worthless.

Overall Review: Bought this in a bundle with a 3080. Thankfully it was before the new rules that require you to return entire bundles if you want to return any of it. I am still waiting to get my money back from Newegg but I'm sure it will come back soon. I hooked this up in order to test if I was having issues with my current 850w psu, and it was just straight up dead. No posting, no boot to bios, nothing, just dead dead dead. Maybe you'd have less of a chance of getting a dead psu if you order outside of a bundle, but I'm almost certain that it probably doesn't matter, just stay away from this specific product. Newegg is being scummy with not allowing returns for defective products without being able to keep the extremely rare products that honest to g** consumers are struggling to get. Nice way to extort people out of money, but hey, what can we do about it? Sucks that bundles are the only things scalpers can't use their scripts to buy up, so it literally only affects direct buyers. Sigh.

Owned for a month and a half and it's already failing.

WD Black 8TB Performance Internal Hard Drive 7200 RPM 256MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" - WD8001FZBX

Pros: -Massive storage. Can hold loads of games and anything you can want.

Cons: -Died just barely past the time I could return it. I still want the capacity but don't think I'll buy this again, and not at least without some kind of warranty.

Overall Review: I've had 3 separate WD Blue HDDs that I've bought since 2012 and they are all still running extremely well. There is no reason that this higher quality and faster HDD should go out in a fraction of the time it took my others (which are still very much alive). This was meant to replace those but I'm glad I haven't tossed those yet because I'm gonna need them after this garbage turned to garbage.

Great card, runs hot.

MSI Radeon RX 5700 XT 8GB GDDR6 PCI Express 4.0 Video Card RX 5700 XT EVOKE OC

Pros: -This card is a beast but still size conscious. Not as bulky as other aftermarket cards can get. -Runs everything very VERY well. -Drivers are no longer an issue.

Cons: -No raytracing. -Gets very hot.

Overall Review: -Drivers are no longer an issue, as others have complained for the first 6 months that the card was out. I bought this early 2020 and had crashes and black screens, but within a month or so it was fixed and haven't had an issue since. -No raytracing, sadly, but for any new game it gets great frames at even ultra settings. I've played a lot of COD:MW on ultra settings while still maintaining 160-200 fps, and many other well optimized games it can just plow through them like nothing. -Gets very hot. There are 2 temperatures it measures, the junction temp and the core temp. The core temp gets midway through the 80's no matter how heavy or light the load. The junction usually throttles the card at 105, which is sort of standard out of the box. If you try to overclock, its temp limit maxes at like 112-115 and by that time your case is gonna just set on fire. Not suitable for OCing at all as the performance gains are practically nothing and you'll just be setting your house on fire and decreasing the card's lifespan.

Great Case

Corsair 275R Airflow CC-9011181-WW Black Steel / Plastic / Tempered Glass ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Pros: -Great airflow with front magnetic filter that's easy to clean. -Space for up to even 360mm radiator with fans, I have 240mm radiator with fans in there. -PSU cover, so hiding wires is great.

Cons: None so far as I can tell.

Overall Review: Buy it. Worth it.

Very Happy

Corsair Gaming Sabre RGB Gaming Mouse, Light Weight, 10000 DPI, Optical, Multi color
Corsair Gaming Sabre RGB Gaming Mouse, Light Weight, 10000 DPI, Optical, Multi color

Pros: Looks good, great colors, good weight for medium hands. The profile setup with the iCUE software works fine.

Cons: iCUE software is sometimes annoying and doesn't always hook into the mouse right. Also, the mouse will sometimes not turn on with the start of the computer, so I will have to go to the back of the computer to unplug/replug the device in to get it working again, which always works.

Overall Review: The mouse isn't over encumbered with buttons, and you can remap all of them to do what you want. Also, I never find myself accidentally pressing buttons I don't mean to press, unlike some "high grade super duper elite gaming extreme" mice that have 5 dpi switches, 3 thumb buttons, and 12 left clicks. Honestly just a really uncomplicated, cheap, effective, pretty, and practical mouse. Also, I repurchased this mouse because my first purchase stopped working after a year or so. It had a strange issue with disconnecting/reconnecting which greatly impacted use on a regular basis. Any other mouse that I have tried since then however has not been satisfying for me, and for the price range I decided to repurchase this one. It was an awesome decision, and so far I am feeling comfortable playing games again.
