Good mainstream processor

AMD A8-3850 - A-Series APU (CPU + GPU) Llano Quad-Core 2.9 GHz Socket FM1 100W AMD Radeon HD 6550D Desktop APU (CPU + GPU) with DirectX 11 Graphic - AD3850WNGXBOX

Pros: The A8 processor is, in my opinion, one of the best choices for a mainstream everyday processor. It hits the sweet spot with embedded graphics that are 'good enough' for most consumers and enough core horsepower to keep an everyday box happy. It took a while for me to find the motherboard for me (one with dual DVI or HDMI out), as most motherboard manufacturers of FM1 appear to be cheaping out and only tying a single digital display out on the board, and connecting the other display out to DSUB.

Cons: New socket, not backward-compatible with AM3 boards.

Just a complete fail as a router

NETGEAR WNDR3700-100NAS V.5 Wireless Gigabit Open Source Router/ USB port Rangemax 2.4/5 GHz Simultaneous N600 Dual Band IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: Purchased this router five days ago at a local retailer, despite a little hesitation due to certain reviews I read. Setup was easy, the thing looked nice sitting on my desk, and it was fast...when it ran.

Cons: Unfortunately, it didn't run much. I set it up in my network (1 wired connection, 2-5 wireless devices connected at all times), and it was all downhill from there. The router just plain would not work for more than 30 minutes at a time. After this mysterious time period elapsed where it worked well, the thing would just become unresponsive. It wouldn't allow a connection to the router management page, wouldn't allow outbound or inbound internet traffic, wouldn't allow LAN traffic. OK, maybe something was wrong in the auto-update that it performed when I first turned it on, so I manually flashed to the latest firmware available on Netgear's site. Nope, still had the same problem. Thought about messing around with it, but eventually gave up and returned it to the store.

Overall Review: Seeing as the sale on this item had expired, I opted to purchase the WNDR3400 instead. Sure, it doesn't have gigabit ethernet, but fast ethernet is enough for what I plan on doing in my house. I'm now 5 hours into owning the 3400, and no connection drops. *fingers crossed*

Fantastic new HTPC board

MSI E350IS-E45 AMD E-350 APU (1.6GHz, Dual-Core) AMD Hudson M1 Mini ITX Motherboard / CPU Combo

Pros: This board is the core of my new Win7-based HTPC. I added a dual tuner card, 4GB of memory, a case and a couple of hard drives, and it has turned into a great little media center computer. Windows 7 install on this went much smoother than past installs. The only device that didn't have a drive installed automatically was the onboard NIC (which I'm not going to use, anyway). Board can push out HDTV recordings with no problem, and is able to record one stream while playing back another (haven't tried recording two streams while playing back a 3rd yet).

Cons: The fan was a bit noisier than I expected, but it is still a vast improvement over my previous HTPC build.

Overall Review: I think the only thing this board is missing is onboard bluetooth & wifi. Thusfar I've only seen one such miniITX Fusion board out there, and it was a bit out of my price range. Fortunately I already owned a WiFi USB dongle, and didn't mind using that instead. From what I see, this AMD Fusion architecture is just what you need for a low-power, low-cost but well-featured PC
