Workhorse NAS

QNAP TS-259-PRO-US Diskless System Superior Performance NAS with iSCSI for Business
QNAP TS-259-PRO-US Diskless System Superior Performance NAS with iSCSI for Business

Pros: Impressive might be an understatement. I've been using the QNAP TS-259 Pro for several months now (purchased in April 2010) to store all my data files, and without a single problem or hiccup. I was drawn to this QNAP NAS by the fast transfer rates, great software and low power consumption. Certainly no complaints in this department. My 259 Pro runs for weeks, if not months at a time without any attention whatsoever. The Hitachi drives spin down into sleep mode as expected, further saving power. I am also impressed with the ease of managing users and folder permissions using the QNAP software. It is so much easier to establish a secure working network compared to the Windows platform. For me that feature alone is worth paying a little extra. Regarding QNAP customer service, I found it excellent. During initial setup I had some minor trouble. I called QNAP customer service and they were able to connect remotely to my NAS and fix the issue.

Cons: My Hitachi drives are a little loud, and this NAS does not do much to shield the noise.

Overall Review: Yes, this line of NAS products costs more than the some others. For me the speed, hardware and software quality, power efficiency and reliability of the TS259-Pro are completely worth the premium.

Workhorse Scanner

Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500 Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Scanner for PC
Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500 Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Scanner for PC

Pros: This little workhorse will save you hours and hours of time if you are like me and scan all your important documents. I have been using it for eight months now with no problems at all. This baby is fast, fast, fast. The fact that it automatically scans in duplex mode and will delete blank and auto rotate pages without any user interaction is a life saver. In the rare event of a jam, it is very easy to clear and the software does a pretty good job of allowing you to pick up where you left off. While it really lends itself to documents, it can handle photos as well. Let's say you have some snapshots you want to scan but don't want to handle them individually. If you are not too concerned with resolution, let the ScanSnap digitize those hummers. By the way, Adobe Acrobat comes with the ScanSnap.

Cons: I don't recall seeing an Auto Update feature with this product to keep the software up to day. On the other hand, maybe this is a good thing? Wow, would it not be nice if this were a network enabled product?

Overall Review: It seems pricey, but the ScanSnap is really worth the money, trust me.
