Great Laptop 3/16/2013 9:41:23 PM

Pros: Great budget gaming laptop. This thing has plenty of power with the i7 and gtx660m. I also prefer the gtx660m over the other models with the 550m SLI. SLI has some issues with games here and there and I have never been fully satisfied with it. The fit and finish on this laptop is great, and truly is a bargain for the money.

Cons: The hard drive is slow, don't care replaced with a 256GB ssd.
The Screen size is not 1920x1080. I knew it was the 1366x720 because I searched this product online. Newegg made the mistake when they listed this item. I was a little bummed that it did not have the 1080p screen but I knew it was a long shot. Anyway I find gaming on a full 1080p 15in screen to be too much, I like the lower rez for games on this size screen.

Overall Review: To all those who have trouble booting to install windows 7 or 8 from USB. This is a new BIOS, and you need to load into BIOS, and disable Secure Boot, and Enable Legacy Support in order to boot from a USB drive. Annoying, but quick fix.

Great Laptop 3/13/2013 2:21:23 PM

Pros: •Best performing laptop you can find under $1000
•Screen looks great (even though its not 1080)
•10key
•Simple and professional looking
•Speakers surprisingly good
•mSata port

Cons: •Screen isnt 1080p
•can get a bit hot when running games/large programs. This isnt really a con as it is expected, but prepare to get a cooler-stand for it.

Overall Review: The addition of a mSata drive put this laptop into a whole different league.

For me at least, having a professional looking laptop was paramount. It would be very embarrassing to attend conferences and pull out some behemoth with crazy paint and glowing panels (alienware for example). This laptop has the same performance of other gaming rigs, but is the absolute definition of subtle.

Good Value 1/4/2013 9:21:54 AM

Pros: Graphics Card - The graphics cards performance for the value is quite good. I looked at a variety of cards at the time of purchasing this and, in my opinion, it is the best bang for the buck. I've played Diablo 3, Guild Wars 2, World of Warcraft, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare on this will satisfactory results.

Cons: Heat - Horrible heat dissipation and especially on the Hard Drive. I moved mine to the optical drive and this helped the issue. I'd strongly advise a cooling pad if gaming will be your primary use. If not, the heat isn't bad.

Keyboard - It has a little more flex than I like but isn't anything horrible.

Overall Review: The screen resolution is the biggest gripe about these laptops. I agree that the lower resolution isn't good for entertainment but for productivity it works fine. I use the HDMI port out for entertainment purposes and hook it up to my TV or External Monitor. I am using this as a Desktop Replacement in the truest sense of the statement. It took the place of my tower and now I can take it with me with a lot more ease.

Good laptop...poor keyboard 1/1/2013 9:28:54 AM

Pros: Bright screen
Great game performance

Cons: Poor keyboard - key strokes are often not registered
Track pad - must be turned off to type.

Overall Review: I purchased this laptop for business and occasional gaming. The game performance was fine. But as a business laptop, the machine is almost unusable. I do a lot of typing for work. Every 5th or 6th keystroke I typed did not register. Also, the track pad is positioned very poorly. I needed to continually turn it off and on while typing.

Good PC 12/25/2012 4:41:38 AM

Pros: Great bang for the buck gaming laptop. I think the screen looks great as is, but if you want high res than pay $200 more for the upgrade.

Cons: 6gb of ram with a 4gb and 2gb stick? I replaced them with 2x4gb of gskill and it runs great, but Lenovo could have done that for a few bucks more.

Absolutely disappointing screen. Not all Y580s the same! 12/3/2012 12:36:24 PM

Pros: Performance is good for gaming

Cons: I made a big mistake by only looking at performance and not being aware of the two different screens the Y580 comes with. I bought a Y580 because I wanted a good gaming laptop, so I did a lot of research into graphics cards and decided that the Y580 had one of the fastest graphics cards for a laptop within my price range. I knew not to look at processors for gaming, since the graphics card matters a lot more, but I should have paid more attention to the screen.

One of the things that got me interested in the Y580 was that my friend has one. I got to try out how well games run on his, and I also got to make sure it was portable enough for me. All seemed great, so I eventually went ahead to buy one for myself after comparing its specs to those of other laptops I was looking at. When looking at the different versions of the Y580, I noticed one of the main differences with the higher models was the higher resolution screen. I thought that was unimportant and something mainly for making movies look good, so went ahead and bought the cheapest one with the lower resolution 1366x768 screen thinking it's probably good too. Like I said, this was a mistake.

When I unboxed it and turned it on, I noticed what I thought was supposed to be black on the boot screen didn't look very dark at all. It was more like an off-gray that got lighter towards the top of the screen depending on what angle you looked at it from. I wasn't sure if this was going to be an issue, but I knew it wasn't an issue on my desktop monitor. I went through the setup process and started using the computer, and things about the screen still seemed a bit off to me. Not only because everything looked washed out, but also since it was much harder to use two windows side by side. There wasn't enough space onscreen, because everything was so big.

I compared it to my friend's screen later, and can say that his had absolutely none of the issues I have been experiencing with mine. Black was black, colors were great, and things onscreen weren't obscenely large. I can understand if Lenovo wants to make us pay more for a great screen over a good one, but this is ridiculous. I paid a lot of money for this laptop, so I expect at very least a decent screen.

I'm currently in the process of returning this, and I'm looking into another laptop. that comes with a 1920x1080 resolution screen and slightly slower NVIDIA GT 650M graphics. I decided that any decent graphics card I get isn't going to be as bad as dealing with this screen.

Overall Review: I didn't buy the exact same Y580 as the one listed here, but the version I got came with the same screen this one comes with.

Only downside is the screen 11/24/2012 9:32:39 AM

Pros: >Plenty of RAM (6 GB) ... 8 GB would have been preferable
>Solid video chipset/card. Works great for 3D/4D rendering of vector & scalar datasets.
>Processor is snappy.
>Good battery life.
>Bright screen.
>Runs cool.
>Ok hard drive.
>Backlit keyboard also has a nice 'feel' to it.
>Dedicated number pad.
>Only came partially full of crapware.
>Touchpad has some touchscreen-like functionality (also a con).
>Windows 8 (also a slight con).

Cons: >Screen resolution is only 1366x768 which is a downer, but not an end all.
>Touchpad functionality can get in the way. You can disable features you don't want & performance drastically improves.
>Some keys are a bit cramped on the right side of the keyboard.
>Some drivers aren't fully up to spec for Windows 8 as of this writing, but early adopters of a new OS should be aware of this. I tried updating the Intel video chipset, and once that was the complete the OS wouldn't load. Good thing you can still get to Safe Mode to roll back the drivers.

Overall Review: I was forced to buy a new notebook after my old one failed. I looked to this or another brand, and choose this one since there are some GeForce 650M cards that use slower memory. The screen is a bit of a buzzkill, but you can shrink the task bar to get more real estate. I haven't investigated to see if this has a dual hard drive bay. If it does I'll be adding a SSD and converting the large hard disk to the new format.

All in all it's not a bad deal for the hardware you get. If this is going to be a mix of business & pleasure it's a fairly solid purchase.
