Pros: -Very customizable -Easy to use software -Ambidextrous (left or right handed) -Rubberized feel -Functions perfectly, nice button feel -Good button count (8 if you count the scroll wheel) Overall this mouse is great in terms of what you can customize. There are 2 weights that weigh 4.5 grams each that can be put into either side to make the mouse heavier. There are 2 side grips available for each side of the mouse that are easily interchangeable (they use magnets to connect). The height of the mouse can also be adjusted fairly easily, which is nice as well. The software for changing the LED colors and functions of the buttons is very easy to understand and use. The LEDs are very customizable; almost all the LEDs can be changed individually. It is also nice to know that it can be used easily by people who are left OR right-handed. The mouse has a nice rubberized feel that is nice on my hand. The mouse has absolutely no functionality issues, the buttons have a nice click to them and the mouse has an overall high-quality feel to it.
Cons: -Slick parts of the mouse -Side button placement (6 usable buttons for me) -More narrow than I prefer in a mouse Parts of the mouse are pretty slick to the touch. They will easily slide under my finger. Unfortunately, one of those places is the scroll wheel. I am used to easily being able to scroll up and down with minimal pressure. With this mouse I do have to push down just a tiny bit or my finger will just glide over the scroll wheel; it doesn’t take much force at all and I did get used to it fairly quickly, but it is an annoyance to me. The placement of the side buttons does not seem ideal for my hand. I can easily reach both of the buttons at my thumb, but if I want to use the buttons on the other side of the mouse, I am forced to bend my finger and an odd angle or move my entire grip on the mouse to the side, which is not ideal while gaming – my wife does not have the same issue though. This gives the mouse 6 usable buttons for me. This mouse is a bit thinner than what I am used to, it is less comfortable to me than a thicker mouse would be.
Overall Review: Please bear in mind that mice are very much to a person’s individual taste and hand shape/size. This mouse is a bit tricky to say one way or the other. I like the feel of the mouse in my hand quite a bit. Being able to change the weight and customize lights and button functions easily is also nice. However, the slick parts of the mouse and the 2 unusable buttons for me make me reluctant to give it a perfect score. I will not remove an egg for button placement (the 2 side buttons I cannot easily reach) as it could either be the way I grip a mouse, my hand shape, or the fact that the mouse is meant to be able to be used by left handed people too that cause me to have issues with that – the design does not work for me, but my wife says it does for her. I will deduct an egg for the slick parts of the mouse though. A mouse should not slide around under my hand or under my fingers – it should move with my hand. I feel like this mouse would be much better for me if I had smaller hands. While I personally do not like it for every day use, my wife has taken it as her new mouse (she is replacing a mouse that cost the same amount). I do think overall it is well made and could be a great mouse if it fits your hand and grip style.
Pros: + Adjustable on-the-fly DPI up to 8200 DPI + Static lighting profiles are easy to program + Adjustable palm rest height + Interchangeable side grips + Suitable for left or right-handed users + Build quality is excellent + Very comfortable to use + Interesting, complex possibilities for effects if you like to experiment
Cons: - Bit of a learning curve for programming effects - Had to go online to get user manual
Overall Review: This is easily the best mouse I have ever owned, and I have been using mice since the days of having to clean lint out of your roller. Installation was a snap; I followed the included quick setup guide, plugging it in and downloading the driver from the G.Skill website. There is also a user manual on the website that will explain how to use the software to set up profiles and lighting effects in more detail. If I had to knock anything on the product, it would be that I had to go online to get the manual, and some of the areas like lighting effects didn’t go into enough detail. For example, it would be awesome if I could set up a KITT (knight rider reference) strobe effect on the 4 center lights when my PC is idle. I *think* the effect is possible, but I will have to experiment to see, and I have no idea if I can apply it only when idle. I’m not deducting an egg for this complexity. In fact this is a plus for me personally as I like to experiment with these kinds of things. However, the manual could be a little more detailed in my opinion. On the other hand, it is super easy to set up basic lighting profiles, macros, and key functions. There are seven “light zones” on the mouse that can be individually set to any color you want. You then save the profile to your pc and/or to the mouse (the mouse can hold five on board, which lets you keep your profile if you move it to multiple PCs). I was able to do this before even looking at the manual. You can apply macros or windows functions to individual buttons. Your profiles can be applied universally or to individual programs. For example, if playing CoD I can make the mouse red and assign the reload key to button 6 on the right side of the mouse. But if I fire up FSX, I can make the mouse blue (or any color) and make that same button execute an engine startup or shutdown macro. The build quality of the MX 780 is excellent. It has a brushed metal bottom surface that helps it glide effortlessly across my mouse pad. The adjustable palm rest is nice, and the pair of included weights, when used, give the mouse even more of a solid feel. The replaceable side grips are also super-easy to swap out since they are magnetic. It only takes a second or two. Only the palm rest adjustment requires use of the included tool. As someone who has used one model of optical mouse for the last 8 years (MX 518), I did have to get used to the feel of this one (this mouse lies a bit flatter than the MX 518), but it has been well worth it. This is a fantastic mouse. Now I need to save up for the matching G.Skill keyboard!
Pros: -- customizable -- feel -- works on difficult surfaces -- cool looking
Cons: -- cost
Overall Review: This is the most “aggressive” looking mouse I’ve ever seen. The materials are a cut above; even the wire is braided. It seems to be built on a machined aluminum frame with PTFE low friction glides. Perfect for bringing to gaming or LAN parties. It is smoothly comfortable, with just enough grip n the surface. There are 2 customizable buttons on each side in addition to regular mouse buttons on top. Another push button is below the wheel. Out of the box, it lights up a soft cyan color from every angle. More on that below. Windows 10 (and I’m sure other operating systems) recognizes and install basic drivers immediately. An odd thing happened during the install, my antivirus alerted on the setup as containing a virus. I reluctantly disabled during the install then did a full scan. Luckily I found nothing, so judge as a false positive. The mouse is VERY configurable and won’t disappoint no matter how fast or slow, page feed speed, etc. you want. You can use either hand comfortably and choose side grips (4) and weights to get it just the right feel. A secret to it’s speed and chameleon ability is it has .5 MB of memory inside, which stores profiles that can be switched in and out. You can record text or “mouse” macros to assign to buttons to instantly execute. Great for complex, repetitive tasks. The lighting effects are fun. You can change each lit area (all 8) independently with all kinds of colors and effects, like “breathing” (pulsing) and “cycling” through all colors. No one will mistake your mouse for theirs! If anything gets too messed up, click on the wrench and “Reset to Default Settings.” You can adjust “liftoff” at which the distance from the surface stops registering. That didn’t have much effect on my surface. I think the shell would be very comfortable for average to larger hands. There is a brass allen wrench included that tilts the palm end up or down to just fit your hand. This is the first mouse I’ve seen that works very well on a glass top, although I had to slow it down. It also worked on white paper. G.Skill certainly did their homework.
Pros: Comes with all of the accessories to adjust between left and right handed layouts. The magnets used for the side panels appear to be rare earth magnets, there is also a grove that the piece fits into. This is pretty effortless to change the configuration on the mouse. I was able to use the mouse on every surface other than glass. I am still yet to find anything that will actually work on glass though. Through a week of use, I was unable to find a ‘dead spot’ for the mouse to skip around or lag from not being able to read the surface. I used the mouse on my high gloss dining room table with wood grain, a dark grain, marble, mono colored folders high gloss and matte finish, standard mouse pad etc. The software is extremely easy to configure the mouse with. I’ve ran into problems in the past trying to load different program modes for mice! I’m very impressed. Unlike some other brands, the mouse lights are not overpowering and are subtle enough in the dark to not fatigue your eyes. Although its not mentioned, the cord is about 6 foot long.
Cons: Right out of the box, I was adjusting the palm elevation a little bit. I immediately realized that there is no back stop on the screw. It came loose from the back piece, and slightly stripped a little bit trying to get it back together. I’m not sure why this was not thought of. However if you do experience this, do not force the screw back into the plastic. Make sure that the screw is facing straight in the hole, which can be difficult. Some of the edges feel as if they could be smoothed out just a little bit for comfort, as with anything it is just overall preference. They are not jagged or sharp edges.
Overall Review: Personally I prefer a free spinning scroll wheel. However, this is not a terrible design, it is open and easy to clean. It would be nice if the mouse came with a small pouch, or something to keep all of the accessories and tool for future use. I have a feeling they will get lost in time. Fortunately it is just a standard hex tool if you did lose the factory supplied screw. My initial impressions with the mouse, was that it was cheap and built very cheap. After adding the weights, it became more in line with the weight that I am used to. I seldom have a wired mouse, and the batteries clearly are the weight difference for these. This is my first experience with a GSkill mouse and I would gladly purchase another. Hopefully they address the screw backing out. I generally would remove an egg for the palm rest adjustment screw, however I do not feel that most users would ever experience this, without forcing it past its maximum adjustment. I'm likely going to take this mouse to work for every day use. It is extremely comfortable and easy to use/program.
Pros: Able to adjust high and sensitivity. Great software. Multiple setting points on DPI to hone your gaming skills. Able to modify for right or left handed. Extremely comfortable. Tons of customization with the lighting. Multiple profiles to setup in the software. Multiple buttons that aren't a hassle to get to although takes some getting used to. Well priced. G-Skill Brand
Cons: One of my biggest issues is that in order to make the lighting changes stick or to turn them off, you have to have the software up and running. This means you cannot close it to the system tray or close it out otherwise the changes revert back to the default.
Overall Review: I haven't set many macros or memory profiles yet but I love the software and how easy it is to use. The mouse is extremely comfortable which for me is a plus having not used a gaming mouse like this before. I am coming from a several year old Razer Salmosa that, aside from the driver not working after a couple of reboots (known issue) has served me solidly. This mouse is very comfortable and my wife even finds it easy to use and thinks it is cool. Aside from the software (which I am dinging an egg for) this mouse is perfect (and the only software issue I have is with lighting right now). It could easily be my issue with the lighting changes not sticking.
Pros: +Ambidextrous - The mouse is packaged with a pair of "side grips" for both right and left handed configurations. The entirety of the rest of the mouse is completely symmetrical. The symmetry allows for ambidextrous use while the grip attachments essentially transform the mouse for left or high-handed use. You can also get creative and use both 'thumb' grips, or both 'pinky' grips, or even no grips if those non-standard configurations are more comfortable for you. Overall, this attachment system allows for greater flexibility and should make the mouse more comfortable for a wider variety of hands. +Easily removable grips - The side grips are attached using small, powerful magnets and interlocking tabs, meaning no tools are required to change them. This could be particularly beneficial if the mouse is regularly switched between different configurations. +Height adjustable palm rest - With a range of 8-11mm, this further adds to the physical customization options for this mouse. +Adjustable weight - The mouse comes packaged with 2 x 4.5G weights which may be installed on either side under the side grips. Without the weights the mouse seems to weigh a bit less than most of the premium gaming mice that I've tested. Even with the weights it still doesn't weigh as much as some of the mice that utilize metal bases, so more weights could be better. +Entirely customizable lighting system - Through G.Skill software, virtually any color or combination of colors may be selected to customize the lights. There are also options available to add "breathing" or "cycling" effects to the lights. In addition to color, the brightness can be adjusted and the lights may be disabled altogether. This systems allows for great aesthetic flexibility. +Reasonably Priced - For the DPI rating and the features, this mouse is priced well. It seems to sacrifice a bit in build quality to make this price range, but if you take care of your things that shouldn't be a problem. +Glides Smoothly - The mouse has 5 large teflon pads on the base and the thumb grip attachment also has 1. These pads seem to be effective at creating a smooth gliding experience when moving the mouse around. It moves much more smoothly than my RAT7. +Long, Braided Cord - The cord seems to be high quality and is long enough to snake through my keyboard tray, around the back of the desk and reach the PC chassis on the floor on the opposite side of the desk.
Cons: -Confusing DPI indicator system - When switching DPI settings the center row of lights on the mouse will flash a color which indicates which setting has been selected. (800=white, 1600=red, 2400=green, 4800=blue, 8200=yellow) This setting is too arbitrary for my taste. On my RAT7 there is a row of lights which essentially creates a small gauge where more lights=higher DPI. I prefer the system on the RAT7. The DPI switching button on the MX780 is also not a 'rocker-style', meaning it's just a single button, and if you are at 1600 DPI and you want to go down to 800 you'll have to scroll 'up' through all of the higher settings before getting back to 800. -Basically 100% Plastic - This isn't necessarily a con, but it doesn't feel as high quality as some of the premium mice that employ metal for certain parts. The base of the MX780 appears to have a metallic veneer but I believe that is also plastic. -Tool required for height adjustment - The mouse comes with a small 'hex' style driver which can be used to turn a screw on the bottom of the mouse, and thus adjust the palm rest height. This tool is likely to get lost/misplaced by perhaps most people, meaning if you want to adjust it later you might find yourself rummaging through drawers or tool boxes to find the correct tool. Something like a knob, or a spring loaded locking tab, or a wide flat-head style screw that can be adjusted with a coin, or even if the wrench was stowed on the mouse itself (like the RAT7) would all have been more convenient. -Awkward feeling side buttons - The side buttons don't offer much resistance, they have a very slick texture, and they have a lot of play. This results in the buttons feeling like they are barely hanging on and, for me, makes them awkward to press. I also find myself pressing them accidentally more often. I prefer side buttons that have a shorter range of motion, textured surface, and a stiffer feel.
Overall Review: All of the "Cons" I listed are not necessarily flaws in the design of this mouse, but merely points of my own personal preference. It would be impossible to design a mouse which was comfortable and otherwise agreeable for everyone. We all have different preferences so this is all very subjective. Overall, this is a well priced product which should appeal to anyone wanting a feature rich gaming mouse without spending $70-100. The MX780 makes small sacrifices with regard to materials and eliminating box clutter to offer a product to fill that niche. It is reasonably customizable and offers a unique ambidextrous experience. --- I should note that the first MX780 that I received was DOA. My computer recognized the device and I could even customize the lights and use the buttons and scroll wheel, but the optical sensor never responded to movement at all. I contacted G.SKILL and they were very helpful in arranging a replacement of the mouse and quickly shipped me a new unit. I would consider buying more G.SKILL products based on my customer service experience alone. Overall, this is a nice mouse and I would recommend it to any PC gamer on a budget. There are gaming mice that I prefer but all of them are more expensive. This is definitely the best mouse I've used that is currently under $70.
Pros: • Very reasonably priced for a 8200 DPI laser mouse • The mouse feels very good under the hand, the surface is smooth and the grip is comfortable. I’m used to more traditional, conservative design, so at first the “interesting” design did put me off a bit • The build quality of this mouse is really superior; it matches the quality that I am used to in the G.Skill RAM I’ve been suing for years. • I really like way the color changes as you select the various DPI settings, very cool feature. It does change back to the RFB nain colors after a few seconds • The fact that you can raise the height of the mouse is a first for me, it brings a new element of comfort to a gaming mouse • I’m right handed and most gaming mice as designed for right handed individuals, this mouse is designed so it can be used by lefties as well. • The surface glide on this mouse is very smooth; it has four Teflon pads on the bottom that provides very smooth movement across your mouse pad. I have an aluminum mouse pad and moving the mouse is as smooth as silk.
Cons: • The manual is lacking, no instructions on how to change out the side grips, change the height or where to put the weights. You have to figure it out for yourself? • No software CD came with the retail package, you have to go to G.skill to download it. • The mouse only came with two 4.5gram weights. The mouse is a bit on the light side so I would have preferred 2 more. Also traditionally you place the weights underneath the mouse typically; the placement of the weights in this mouse is on either side of the mouse behind the side grips. • You can only change the colors via software, not a big deal but an extra step nonetheless. No instructions of software in the guide as well, again you have to figure it out yourself.
Overall Review: Once you unpack the mouse and the accessories you will not find any instructions on how to swap out the side grips or any of the other features, you have to figure that out yourself. I will give a few tips… In order to change the side grip, just pull off the side grip, it is secured by a couple of magnets. Also to place the weights, there is a spot behind the side grips where you put the magnets on either side of the side grips, don’t expect to put the weights in a cage under the mouse. Then lastly to adjust the height look underneath the mouse behind the laser, there is a stainless screw where you can insert the adjustment tool that came in the box, turn it counter clockwise to increase height, be careful not to turn it too much otherwise the panel will come loose, it is tricky to get the screw aligned to go back in. To access changing colors and other features you need to go to the URL below to download the software. Another tip…if you change settings using the software, make sure you save it to Device Memory otherwise you will lose your settings when you close the tool http://gskill.com/en/product/ripjaws-mx780---laser-gaming-mouse
Pros: + Customizable DPi settings to 8200 DPI + Programmable buttons and lighting + Ambidextrous design + Adjustable weights + 2 Year warranty + Braided cable + Aluminum bottom
Cons: - Only 2 4.5g weights - Button layout slightly awkward - Driver Software not included
Overall Review: First of all, the mouse is aggressive looking. I personally like it, but some may not. After adjusting the palm height, it feels pretty good in the hand although I personally like a more rounded profile like on my tried and true MX500. The mouse scroll button is slightly stiff, but I liked the action and the texture of the wheel. The laser was very accurate and with the adjustable DPI settings, offered a great gaming experience. Except, the side buttons near my pinkie are in a slightly awkward position and were sometimes accidentally pressed. My son, who tried the mouse as well also was impacted by accidental side button presses. The programmable lighting is great. I had fun messing with the different lighting zones and setting them up to match my environment. It my be a bit gimmicky, but I like it. The mouse does had the two 4.5g weights that can be added. I personally would like to see a little more heft, but this is a minor complaint. Overall I think that G.Skill has done a real good job with the MX780. My only real complaint is the side button placement being awkward for me personally. Other than that, it is a very solid offering.
