Could someone please give me some advice on upgrading a "Steam Machine" I got in 2015

For a bit of context for those who may not remember, or may have not known. Back around 2013/2014 when Valve was first developing SteamOS, it was meant to be shipped not with a handheld, but a sort of gaming PC shaped like a console.

It was their way to try and get console gamers to jump to PC gaming by including a console focused OS for the devices, as well as a Steam controller. Quite a few companies began developing their own steam machines such as iBuyPower, Alienware, Zotac, just to name some. However as the Steam Controller got delayed, and SteamOS was also delayed, as well as seeming a bit like a mess, the companies instead decided to release their systems with Windows 8/8.1 instead with different spec variations.

Around Valentine’s Day 2015, I got one of the systems. The iBuyPower SBX Entertainment System, which was running an AMD RX7 250, AMD Athlon x4, 500gb of space, and 4gb of RAM, and came with Windows 8.1. October of that same year, I upgraded it to Windows 10, but didn’t use it a lot more after that, as it was just so weak.

Years later, around a few days ago, I decided to open that old iBuyPower system up, took a picture, and even did a search by scan on the GPU to see that you could get it individually. My question I had though for you guys. Is it possible for me to upgrade it with new parts such as a new GPU, CPU, potentially a new motherboard, and of course new RAM, and Hard Drive? As it currently is, it’s not going to be able to run Windows 11. Windows 10 support ends soon, and the system is so weak, that it would only be able to handle a very lightweight Linux distro.

I think these machines used proprietary parts, which means custom motherboard.

Upload the photo of the system please and I can give you more information.

I am thinking that if you’re looking to upgrade the GPU, CPU, motherboard, RAM, and system storage… you’re going to have to upgrade the PSU too–at this point I suggest looking into a new case all together, unless you like the shape of that case. It may be possible to modify it to fit the new parts.

It sounds like you need basically a whole new computer. Those are aging parts and I wouldn’t trust them to run smoothly with newer parts 10 years later since you got your system in 2015. Luckily, it sounds like you’d interested in a budget system so the price will be manageable. Computer parts are lasting longer and longer and staying strong. You can start your build with Intel Socket 1700 to strike a balance between price to performance or an AMD AM4 socket build.

Honestly any upgrade, if possible, just wouldn’t be cost effective. Though you could probably repurpose it for a home server appliance..

Here’s a pic of the inside. I didn’t take it out aside from removing the shield, as I don’t want to potentially damage anything and not being able to upgrade it at all. As for getting a new case altogether, I was mainly hoping to get it upgraded to where it could be usable again, as it would just be a shame for it to become E-waste, simply because nothing can really run on it. I had at one point considered turning it into a media server/NAS, but it appears to only be able to house a single Hard Drive, maybe a Solid State Drive

Well, I don’t quite understand, the parts you theoretically want to swap out will to new ones, won’t the old parts become e waste…? You’re going to get e waste no matter what you do, I think.

Anyway, that looks like a lot of proprietary parts, it looks like there is a daughterboard hooked up to the motherboard. This definitely won’t fit modern parts inside. The best thing that you can do is take the license from the old system and see if you can use it to upgrade to windows 11 via a windows email link license on a new system to save yourself however much a brand new windows license is.

Again, I think the best thing to do is what @Corruptedkiddo said alongside ideas from @SaintTyr

A brand new computer is the best thing you can do with this. I am sorry if this is not the information you wanted to hear. Best of luck.

Thanks for attempting to help out. In regards to the parts being E-Waste, I thought that they could have at least been sold on someplace like Ebay for people that might want to get parts for a Windows 8/8.1 or even Windows 7 Retro machine, like they do for Windows 95/98, 2000, and XP. But I guess that unless Bazzite starts supporting that hardware, or I find a Linux distro that would be lightweight enough to run on the system, while continuing to get updates, I may just end up letting the machine sit around, or maybe sell it after wiping the hard drive.

Maybe it is possible, hopefully other people will pitch in who have more knowledge on the subject.

You can try places that specialize in retro gear, but usually, it’s easy to get lots of older computer gear for very cheap so I don’t know if there’s a need for older computer gear.

I recently found something interesting. While not upgrading a Steam Machine, I did find a video for a mini desktop PC getting upgraded, and there appears to be parts that were bought for that. I feel the iBuyPower system is bigger than that mini desktop, so maybe that could work as a reference point. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ERCveugP-bo

They also make some low profile 3050/60-5050’s & RX 6600 8GB now that could work for a good upgrade. You would need a 500/550W PSU
