I currently have a i7 9700kf so I feel like anything is an update at this point. But right now the i5 not on sale is at 300$, while the i7 is at 285$. the i5 is a little bit faster but with less cores.
I recently upgraded to a 5060ti which has pcie 5.0, the i7 9700kf is lga 1151, which no motherboards support anything higher than pcie 3.0 at that socket. so upgrading to a better CPU will also help my GPU performance. I also want to keep my ddr4 ram that I have which is one of the reasons why I’m going with these CPUs. (and also because I don’t know AMD as well). any advice is helpful!
The 5060 Ti is labeled PCIe 5.0, but it’s only wired for x8 lanes, not the full x16. In practice, that means even though it’s using PCIe 5.0, it’s only using half the lanes. But the bandwidth at PCIe 4.0 x8 (which is what you’ll get on a PCIe 4.0 board) is still huge—it’s roughly on par with PCIe 3.0 x16. So, you won’t see a performance hit. The real boost is from the CPU. The 12700KF beats the 12600KF thanks to more cores and threads, which means better gaming now and a longer lifespan for multitasking or future games. I’d go with something like the MSI Z690 Tomahawk or ASUS TUF Z690-PLUS D4. They support DDR4, and with a BIOS update, they’ll handle future chips like a 14900, so you’ll be set for both now and later.
Thanks! I didn’t even think about how the number of lanes on the gpu. I’m planning on the MSI Pro B760-P motherboard. Something decently affordable. But I’ll also take a look at the boards you recommended.
They are higher end boards maybe something that meets in the middle so if you ever want to max it out to a 14900 series. A board with good VRMs will be needed. A budget board will be insufficient.
I’ve haven’t explored overclocking yet. Maybe that’s something I could get into. If I do, it wouldn’t be anything insane.
at those prices you should be looking at AM5 or LGA1851. lower end z890 boards are pretty cheap, and newegg routinely has open box 265kf’s for $220 if you’re insistent on Intel. otherwise you can get very cheap Ryzen 7000 CPUs, and AM5 motherboards are frequently sub $100
I was looking at the combo deals for lga 1851. it might be a little more expensive in general because of the ram. (I have ddr4) but it might be worth it when prices calm down. it’s annoying that motherboard company’s are making the ddr4 boards more expensive now. at least for lga 1700 it is.
