I’m at a crossroads. Half of my friends are telling me “You’re not a real PC gamer unless you build it yourself,” but the other half are enjoying their stress-free pre-builts with full warranties and zero cable management headaches.

I love the idea of picking every single part to save cash and customize the look, but the thought of bending a CPU pin or troubleshooting a BIOS error after spending $2k is terrifying. On the flip side, some pre-builts have that “bloatware” reputation, even if they are professionally optimized.

I found this killer comparison between Pre-built and Custom Gaming PCs that actually puts some real numbers behind the choice. It claims mid-range custom builds can save you around 33% compared to similar pre-builts, but you lose that “one-call-fixes-all” support. It’s a great reality check on the pros/cons of both worlds.

So, I want to settle this once and for all:

  1. For your first “real” gaming rig, did you build it or buy it? Any regrets?

Right now a prebuilt may be a better price to performance pick because of the shortage. Because the prebuilt companies haven’t updated their prices yet. At least I think that.

@MarkFan Hey there, we sell nothing but custom-built, boutique PCs containing standard components. NVMe drives are always minimum Gen4, power supplies are always Gold rated or higher with native 12V-2x6 connections, name brand water cooling systems, motherboards with good VRMs.

We wrote an entire article comparing the three options.
Pre-built systems are typically full of non-standard components and bloatware. Good luck upgrading later, particularly when brands like HP and Dell use non-standard power supplies; upgrading to a better GPU that takes more power than the stock one is going to be a challenge (if not impossible.)
Building your own is the thriftiest way to go.
If you want a single company to warrant the entire PC build, you go through us.

Spot on. The bulk-buying power of the big brands is basically the only thing keeping the hobby affordable right now. But do you think the trade-off in ‘brand-name’ components is worth it? Usually, they skimp on the RAM timings or the SSD speeds to hit those price points. Or are you seeing pre-builts lately that actually use solid, off-the-shelf parts?

Building yourself is almost always cheaper. Also you can fully customize your build your way if you pick good brand name parts they carry a great warrant 3 years in most motherboards & GPU’s, up to 10 years on PSU lifetime on some RAM Some companies will increase the warrant if you register the product with them. Regarding my budget, I’m aiming for around $1,000 - $1,500. I want a machine that can handle high-refresh 1440p gaming but also stay quiet during some light video editing.

I’ve actually been playing around on Newegg with a parts list to see if I can beat the pre-built prices. I stumbled upon this breakdown of the new PC Builder tool which has been a lifesaver for checking compatibility—it’s making the ‘DIY stress’ way more manageable.

First build: bent a CPU pin, shed some tears, still proud :sweat_smile:
Pre-builts: safe, easy… but zero “I built this beast myself” brag.

Thankfully I didn’t bend a pin on my build. And to be honest, it was easy. I had some help with the aio and maybe one other thing. But other than that, it was easy.

I typically would opt for building, but given the current state of PC gaming, a reputable pre-build company may be easier on the wallet. There is the option of getting second-hand parts which I have done with positive results, but it entirely depends on you.
