I use it to go from HDMI output on computer to DVI input on monitor.  It works fine and I get a good monitor picture.  This allows me to use an HDMI cable because I have plenty of them, in different lengths, so I don't have to buy another special cable.

HDMI is designed to convey the sound signal, and DVI not.  You will have to figure a way to get sound, as your monitor will have picture only.  It's not clear just what you are trying to do, but keep in mind DVI is video only, not sound.  I think DVI stands for "digital video interface", whereas HDMI is a type of "multimedia interface".
