The WD Elements 20TB is a USB 3.0 desktop external hard drive for Windows 10+ users who need substantial plug-and-play storage for files, photos, music, videos, or freeing space on a PC; Mac use requires reformatting.
Recommended For
- Desktop PC users who need to move a large photo, video, or document library off a nearly full internal drive and can keep the drive connected near an outlet.
- Photographers, videographers, and other creators who want roomy desktop storage for completed projects and media libraries, rather than a fast portable drive for active editing.
- Home users who want a high-capacity destination for scheduled PC backups or a second copy of personal files, and understand that one external drive is not a redundant backup system.
- Data hoarders who want a straightforward USB-attached drive for accumulating large files and are comfortable with a desktop-sized enclosure, external power, and hard-drive operating noise.
Real-World Use Scenarios
- When a Windows PC is running low on space, move older or infrequently used files to the Elements drive to free up room on the internal drive without deleting them.
- For a large photo, video, or music collection, keep files together on one desktop-connected drive so they’re easier to store and retrieve than across several smaller drives.
- For a home computer backup, copy important folders to the drive as a separate storage destination; it provides a local copy, but should not be the only copy of irreplaceable files.
- For video or photography projects, use it to store completed work, source footage, and other large files that don’t need SSD-like access speeds; expect transfers to take longer than on an SSD.
- For a DIY NAS or multi-drive enclosure, some storage enthusiasts remove the drive from its Elements case and install it internally; this is a hands-on modification, not the standard plug-and-play use, and compatibility can vary.
