What is the media code of these discs? The media code tells you exactly who manufactures the DVD media. Some examples are: RitekF1, MCC004-000, MBIPG101-R05, CMCMAG-AM3, AML003-000, et al. It is important because it lets you know what what you are buying regardless of brand. It cannot be found on the disc packaging, it must be scanned from an actual disc using a utility like DVDidentifier or Nero DiscSpeed.

The recording speed does include 16x.

Question 2

Is this something I can record on, take out of the machine, put back in the machine and add another recording on?  Like if I wanted to record three weekly episodes of Criminal Minds, one after another?  I know I can do this on RW DVDs but can I do it on R DVDs?

Usually not, but it depends on your software rather than the discs. Most software "finalizes" a disc when the initial files are completed, and nothing more can be written to them. "RW" means "rewritable". With RW discs, most software will OVERWRITE whatever is already on the disc instead of adding new files at the end, so you will lose anything previously recorded. So again this all comes back to how your software program handles its copying of the files. Stick with whatever you know will work. If you want to experiment with non-rewritable discs like these excellent Verbatim DVD+R, first try with a much smaller pack. Verbatim discs have handy ruled lines for writing what's on them. As far as I'm aware, any disc, whether RW or R, cannot be played back until it is finalized, meaning that nothing more can be added at the end - but I could be wrong about this. The best solution is simply to use a new disc for each subsequent episode - that way you can't go wrong or lose anything. But other replies may mention specific software programs that allow you to add additional data, and still be playable in the meantime.

Question 3

I have a new HP Envy Laptop 8.1 Windows OS.  HP Suggested I back up a recovery set of DVD-R.  Are these of excellent quality?  Will my recovery set  be safe on this brand of DVD-R?

I've used DVDs since first they came on the market.  Although I've occasionally had problems with some other brands, Verbatim has always been reliable.  I consider it high quality, and use it for my own recovery sets.  You mention both DVD+R and DVD-R.  For your laptop, I suggest DVD+R, but DVD-R should work also.  Be sure to check your important DVDs after burning them, to be sure your data was actually written to the disk.  With any product, there is always the chance of a bad manufacturing run on a particular package.  In the rare occasions when one DVD could not be read after burning, I've found the whole cakebox to be bad.

Question 4

My daughter has a CD burner, not sure about a DVD burner.  She wants to load photos onto these.  Will this product work for that?

She can only burn onto these if she has a DVD burner.  If it's on a computer, most come with DVD burners these days, but you will want to check first.
