Excellent workstation power for 1/2 the CPU price of i9 and 1/4 the price of xeons

AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1st Gen - Ryzen Threadripper 1950X Whitehaven (Zen) 16-Core / 32 Threads 3.4 GHz Socket sTR4 180W YD195XA8AEWOF Desktop Processor
AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1st Gen - Ryzen Threadripper 1950X Whitehaven (Zen) 16-Core / 32 Threads 3.4 GHz Socket sTR4 180W YD195XA8AEWOF Desktop Processor

Pros: This is a super workhorse I run daily at 4.1GHz. My CPU bench tests about 20% above the reported TRl 1950x averages at various benchmark sites and runs reliably at 4.1 GHz. So you get more for your money than advertised. With ECC memory, this well outperforms all dual xeon v4s except E5-2698/2699 at less than 25% of the price and with a single socket board. CPU Benchmarks are similar to average i9-7960x for half the price A beast at multithread, floating point computation as needed for scientific simulation Handles streaming 4K/8K editing, no problem!

Cons: The fabric design of Threadripper seems to have high memory latency. 3 times that of an intel CPU. Part of that could be that in reality 1050x is a dual cpu design. But reduced latency would be a help to every performance aspect. In general, RAM performance lags intel similar products by about 30% The memory latency issue affects - Stability in rendering, which is very sensitive to BIOS settings, - RAM performance dependent on CPU intercommunication - Large 20% memory performance difference between NUMA and non-NUMA settings. On my system, the NUMA setting (memory interleave on) for some reason reduces CPU performance by about 15%, while boosting RAM performance by 20%. On my intel workstations there is little performance difference NUMA vs non-NUMA.

Overall Review: This is the best deal for a workstation cpu relative to Xeons, and as an unlocked processor, you can get the max out of it, unlike Intel xeons. Was best cpu value when I bought it for $999, and is a much better value now at the reduced MSRP $799. Wish amd could improve the memory controller and reduce CPU-RAM latency to competitive levels. My next AMD workstation build will use the newer TR 2950x, but the 1950x still offers the best cpu performance for price, until the 2950x is available.

Low-end RTX 2080Ti, cant tell if its just a dud or if any real refurb was done aside from test

GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 2080 Ti 11GB GDDR6 PCI Express 3.0 x16 SLI Support ATX Video Card GV-N208TGAMING OC-11GC
GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 2080 Ti 11GB GDDR6 PCI Express 3.0 x16 SLI Support ATX Video Card GV-N208TGAMING OC-11GC

Pros: Slow stock speed 1350MHz, but was able to flash BIOS to reach 1650MHz Rendering performance much better than 1080Ti, about 40% faster in blender, indigo GPU renders vs my 1080Tis, the only significant advantage AORUS engine software is OK, simple interface Uses reference PCB for RTX 2080Ti Got a little faster RAM and Core speed with this unit by using free EVGA Precision X software.

Cons: Slow stock speed 1350MHz, but was able to flash BIOS to reach 1650MHz This refurb has the micron IC whereas more recent better products use Samsung IC Bad 2D graphics performance -10% lower than my 1080Ti on same configuration. Video/3D about 8% faster than my non-OC 1080Ti

Overall Review: Not recommended unless you only care about having a 2080Ti and not about performance. Is this refurb a factory dud without a new IC, or is the design intentionally limited? The reference PCB which this Gaming OC has should be a able to go a lot faster. If you are looking for an upgrade from 1080Ti, will have to get a more expensive card with base clock 1650-1800 MHz

Handy to have - used on a motherboard with failed audio. Works on all of my systems - dual xeon, i9, amd

Creative Sound Blaster Audigy FX 5.1 PCIe Sound Card with 600 ohm Headphone Amp
Creative Sound Blaster Audigy FX 5.1 PCIe Sound Card with 600 ohm Headphone Amp

Pros: Economical, doesn't use a lot of bandwidth or power

Overall Review: This is not a high end card suitable for audio editing, but otherwise gets the job done. Recommended for normal use, but invest in a high end card if you are doing multitrack audio edits

These fans work great and are quiet

ARCTIC F12 PWM PST - Value Pack (5pc) - Standard Low Noise PWM Controlled Case Fan with PST Feature
ARCTIC F12 PWM PST - Value Pack (5pc) - Standard Low Noise PWM Controlled Case Fan with PST Feature

Pros: 120mm size is great all-purpose for both intake and exhaust, to supplement whatever comes with your case. Excellent bearing quality - rotates easily

Overall Review: 5-pack is enough to finish out a system or spares to replace fans that are starting to slow from friction.

This is the case to get, an affordable engineering masterpiece!

LIAN LI PC-O11 Dynamic Black Tempered Glass on the Front and Left Side, Chassis Body SECC ATX Mid Tower Gaming Computer Case - PC-O11DX
LIAN LI PC-O11 Dynamic Black Tempered Glass on the Front and Left Side, Chassis Body SECC ATX Mid Tower Gaming Computer Case - PC-O11DX

Pros: Compact, lighter, still fit big boards EATX, XL-ATX, SSI-EEB, great thermal performance My other HBM/XL-EATX and SSI-EEB cases, 4u servers are much heavier and larger, with this case I was able to downsize even for dual xeon golds and platinums EVGA Dark X299 fits perfectly with Li's factory predrilled holes, EVGA 1300G2 power supply fits fine - tight, but spaces well thought out Great airflow - using 3x 140m intake, 3 x 120mm exhaust, 2x 140mm EVGA CLC 280 in top USB-C, USB 3, on front to connect with external storage array or backup Super thermal performance if fans and AIO are set up right for airflow Keeps i9-9960X with AIO running 5.1GHz at 40C nominal, 65C continuous load and rarely hits the transient 105C limit under any load. On another one I built, air cooled dual xeon gold 6149s are running 10deg C cooler than in the previous single level large tower case. I realize not all of that may be the case, but makes it possible.

Cons: No fans included (which allows lower price I suppose) No opening front door for hot swap HDDs - have to open the case to access NVMEs and drives Durability and scratch resistance lower. BuI I don't care about the thin metal, I'm not buying a tank. PC-011 is easy to scratch, but if you are using it for workstations not server racks or gamer photo ops, the thermal performance benefit is worth it. Removing the feet releases 3 of 5 panels at once, have to get use to how it comes apart. I found it easiest to build with all panels off. Board mount: Automatically fits ATX, (EATX with a little over overhang) With XL or SSI-EEB may have to add 4-6 inches metal plate to motherboard mount area and drill holes to fit. It worked out fine for me on a Supermicro HBM board with dual Xeon Platinums

Overall Review: My Favorite case I have built with (it was Fractals until this one) Uses a 2-level layout where PSU and drives are below motherboard. This works great as long as you are careful running cables Fans- use 3x 140 + bottom 140mm for intake, and 3x 120mm + 80mm rear for exhaust Compact case so for EATX or larger, you need to tie off cables carefully to not bump fans., XL and HBM boards - may need to add a short full width metal plate onto the motherboard area as I did to support the rear mount holes. Price & capability (and looks) are great, will use this case for future builds

Great performance even on PCiE-3.0

GIGABYTE AORUS NVMe Gen4 SSD 1TB M.2 2280 PCI-Express 4.0 x4 3D TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) Dual Side Copper GP-ASM2NE6100TTTD
GIGABYTE AORUS NVMe Gen4 SSD 1TB M.2 2280 PCI-Express 4.0 x4 3D TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) Dual Side Copper GP-ASM2NE6100TTTD

Pros: I don't have a PCI-e 4.0 board so didn't expect much difference from my WDC SN750s. But this does about 15% better than those even on PCI-e 3.0 for just a little more cost. Copper heat spreader is excellent quality

Cons: With heat spreader, will not fit under some graphics cards in horizontal m2 slot, can use a vertical m2 slot or put it on a PCI-e NVME adapter card.

Overall Review: Best value so far on the 1TB NVMEs I have purchased

Reliable, knowledgeable, fast, courteous - 5 stars all the way!

GigaParts was able to quickly resolve a problem I ran into with incompatible heat sink on an LGA 3647 build for someone else. A return was handled promptly, the right part identified, and I got my build finished with minimal delay. Special thanks to Brian at GigaParts for his help on this one, and I highly recommend GigaParts as a seller. Even with all the obscure parts compatibility issues, you can trust GigaParts will get it right, be courteous, and fair with the customer. It doesn't get better than that.
