Pros: • Aesthetically awesome looking card • Solid build construction • Great performance on some of my favorite titles • My Intel i7-9700K seems to have no problem feeding the GPU • Easy to sync LED control with my motherboard (Mystic Light) • 2 x 8-pin Power Connector (does not feel excessive to me like 3x power connector) • I got card 500/1000 – Something about this just seems cool to me
Cons: • Weight – This thing is heavy (which I would rather have over inefficient cooling) • PCB appears to be slightly distorted – this makes the card slope downward • LED headers are on the Power Connector side of the card – I wish it were opposite • Do not expect much in the way of Ray Tracing (AMD problem – not PowerColor)
Overall Review: Overall, I have a hard time complaining about this card after upgrading from an RX 580. When it comes to the physical card itself, this thing is a beast. It consumes a good portion of my case which is an ATX mid-tower (Corsair Carbide Series 270R). The card itself feels ridged and like it is made of quality materials. The only plastic on the card is the fans and the LED illumination strips. Unfortunately, the one major complaint that I have is that the PCB seems to be distorted. I think this might be the result of the amount of clamping force from the cooler and/or backplate. When the card is mounted, it is easy to see that it slopes. While I would initially say that it is sagging because of the weight, when I try to prop it up, it feels like a lot of strain is being put on the PCB. (Edit) After an initial failed attempt, I did end up using a GPU support bracket (made by upHere) to help support the card. The bracket sits underneath the card by about 19mm (recessed from the edge with the power connectors). Additionally, there is very little shroud where the support bracket can actually support the card because the fans are so big. Sadly, the card still slopes slightly. Ultimately, I do think the bracket has helped support the card a bit but the conclusion that I have come to is that this card might be better suited to be mounted vertically (End Edit). I will likely do this in the future, but I won’t lie, I really like it mounted horizontally, especially because I like the look of the backplate and because it has the markings showing it is card 500/1000 of the limited-edition series. Concerning GPU use, I can finally take full advantage of my monitors capabilities (LG 34UC88 34” – 3440x1440 - 75Hz). When running some of my favorite titles, such as GTA and the Witcher, I can now run ultra-graphics settings and not run into low frame rate issues. I have also played around 6 hours of Cyberpunk 2077 with the GPU and I am able to maintain an average of around 50-55 fps with ultra-graphics settings. Keep in mind, this is without Ray Tracing (CP 2077 does not currently support RT with AMD products). Even if CP 2077 did support RT with AMD GPU’s, I am betting I would not be able to turn it on due to the poor performance of RT in other games (there are plenty of articles detailing this). Ultimately, I do not see this as a PowerColor issue, I see it as an AMD issue. Finally, I have not noticed any excessive fan noise (or really any additional noise in relation to my other case fans for that matter) even when the card is running at full load. I will wrap up by saying that I am very happy with the purchase. While there are some caveats, as mentioned above, this has taken my gaming experience to a whole new level in comparison to the RX 580. My only hopes would be that AMD sorts out the RT issues (it would be side-benefit if PowerColor championed for this as well, given it could reduce the desirability of their product). Nonetheless, I feel I have a GPU that will provide a great gaming experience for years to come.
