Great Drive, Great Price!

Pros: I'm a computer and video engineer supporting broadcast video post production and graphics systems for several clients in Hollywood. I have installed at least 10 of these Toshiba P300 1TB internal 3.5" Hard Drives as Boot Drives in both Macs and PCs that get really heavy use. These drives go in and just plain work 24/7! They are priced competitively and work really well!

Cons: Basically None!

Toshiba 1TB P300 HDWD110UZSVA

Pros: +
• 1 TB (931GB NTFS formatted)
• 7200 RPM
• SATA 6.0Gbps
• 64MB Cache provides fast file access.
• Runs cool, Crystal Disk Info reports 32 ºC (89.6 ºF) during normal operation
• Quiet, it doesn’t stand out, or make old school hard drive chugging noises.
• Price

Cons: -
none

Other Thoughts: ~

I’ve been using this primarily as a programs and gaming drive, and its proven to be a solid performer throughout my usage. I have had no hiccups at all since initializing and formatting the drive (I received a bare bones bulk drive HDWD110UZSVA, same drive as retail version just bulk non-retail packaging.)
As a mechanical drive this performs very well for its price point, and does so with low vibration and nearly quiet operation.
The data sheet claims the acoustics are 25 dB at idle and 26 dB seek mode, and I can attest that the drive is not louder than any of my fans running on low speed.
Programs, games start without delay, drive searches are snappy and folders with a ton of items pop up instantly: this is where the large 64MB cache really shines.

in a real world test, I transferred a pictures folder with just over 6200 loose files, weighing in at a modest 3.38GB. The transfer was initialized from another standard hard drive mounted within my PC to this drive. Total transfer time took just 1:16 (one minute, sixteen seconds), as measured by my non-scientific method of using the built in stopwatch on my smart phone.
The files all sit loose in one folder, once the icon cache had been built by scrolling down through the folder contents, the picture thumbnails now all pop up instantly or near instantly. This is something that my older drive with a smaller cache of 32MB struggles to do, and this has honestly been a point of contention with my older drive.

Crystal Disk Mark results were a little lower than expected, but within the margin of affordable performance drives.
CrystalDiskMark 6.0.1 x64
Sequential Read : 183.969 MB/s
Sequential Write: 182.173 MB/s
Random Read 4KiB (Q 8,T 8) : 0.868 MB/s [211.9 IOPS]
Random Write 4KiB (Q 8,T 8) : 1.032 MB/s [252.0 IOPS]
Random Read 4KiB (Q 32,T 1) : 0.882 MB/s [215.3 IOPS]
Random Write 4KiB (Q 32,T 1) : 0.743 MB/s [181.4 IOPS]
Random Read 4KiB (Q 1,T 1) : 0.417 MB/s [101.8 IOPS]
Random Write 4KiB (Q 1,T 1) : 0.584 MB/s [142.6 IOPS]
(testbed: i7 8700; 16GB DDR4; Win10 x64)

I’m not going to compare these results to solid state drive benchmarks, as that is an apples to oranges comparison, both mechanical HD and SSD have pros and cons.

The warranty is 2 years, which is shorter than I would hope for, but seems to be a standard warranty for drives in this price range. Ideally it’s a good idea to have a separate backup of your important files, no matter which hard drive you choose to use. Further, I would like to point out that by no means should you look at a warranty as life expectancy for PC components, I have drives still in use that have long surpassed their warranty. Conversely I have had components fail far before the warranty expires. Warranties are in place to protect you from equipment failure within a reasonable time span.
I should note I could not find the MTBF or MTTF on any of the data sheets available for the P300 line.

I have used this drive daily for the last 30 days, and it has been a welcome addition to my build.
I would recommend this drive to anyone looking for an affordable performance drive in the 1TB capacity range. This drive has plenty of speed and capacity that should satisfy the needs of most users, the large Cache provides fast and snappy searches, while remaining quiet enough that you wont hear it over most PC fans running at low speed. Set up was a breeze, just pop it in, connect the cables, and run disk management to initialize.

So Far, So Good; So Hot

Pros: - After more than 4 weeks of use I have yet to have a single issue with this drive so far outside of a minor concern I'll address in the con section.
- Fast drive with 64mb of cache and 1TB of storage at a decent price. Perfect for holding videos, pictures, games, etc but I would still recommend an SSD for your OS over a drive like this. May cost a bit more, but better bang for your buck.
- Price is competitive compared to others competing in the same space.

Cons: - Hot... This drive runs way hotter than my other platter drives I'm still using. This concerns me for longevity. In the grand scheme of things, 4 weeks is nothing for a drive. I've had hard drives last me years upon years and others fail in 2-3 months so I'm still in that honeymoon phase.
I feel the need to point that out as I did a little on-line research about the heat and I'm not the only one who experienced this. Along those lines I noticed that 15-20% of the reviews for this drive are negative and all for the same reason. The drive died in less than a year. Quite a few in the first few months. In some cases, drives won't even be detected upon arrival which is most likely a hardware compatibility issue but who wants to take that chance?

Other Thoughts: This is a rather difficult review as I'm happy with this drive but scared to put anything important on it that doesn't have a backup just due to the number of users who are having problems.
I want to recommend it as I personally haven't had any problems, BUT... I've only had it for just over a month.
Take away from that what you will.

1TB HDD no hassle, decent price, and meets performance expectations

Pros: Worked out of the box, packaging undamaged and sufficiently protective, price is with range of WD, Seagate and Samsung alternatives. Found no disk errors using the standard Windows disk utilities, and no clacking or other annoying noises. Windows recognized the drive right away and set a partition and quick format no problem.

Cons: I got nothing here. It is a boring and well performing drive.

Other Thoughts: If you are in the market to pick up a decent amount of space that is reasonably quick, this drive fits the bill. with the 64MBs of cache you will be able to keep up with lots of streaming video recording from either multiple sources or from a 4k source no problem. I observed as expected standard 120MB/s - 80Mb/s (empty - full) write speeds as reported by others. No SATA cable included in this packaging. Nice drive Toshiba, I'm hoping that many of the DOA reviews have been dealt with by either Newegg or Toshiba CS quickly and painlessly.

Stable, fast for mechanical drive

Pros: I replaced a failing drive in an array with this.
It is stable, no errors over a 3 week period.
Not a Seagate 1.5TB

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: This is an ideal replacement drive for someone who still has an array using 1TB drives. It used to be somewhat risky to buy a Toshiba (IBM deathstar), but now it appears the failure rate for Toshiba drives is significantly lower than seagate.

Drive does what it does at a good price

Pros: - 1 TB for $50.
- Lightweight
- 64 MB cache
- 2 year warranty on an inexpensive drive
- Quieter than I would have expected

Cons: - Nothing super fancy about it. It's not really a con, per say, but it isn't anything super special despite the High Performance markings. It's just a normal 7200 RPM drive as far as I can tell.

Other Thoughts: Not bad if you need something inexpensive. 64 MB Cache is higher than some other 1 TB drives I've seen that have 32 MB. Read/Writes on the drive are consistent with other similarly spec'd drives (112-120 MB/s when empty, around 80-90 MB/s when drive is full). If you need a good amount of space for not very much money, this would be on my short list especially give then drive is 7200 RPM and has a 2 year warranty.

P300 HDD – Toshiba

Pros: It’s not super fancy, but if you don’t need super fancy than it is a more than adequate and affordable.

For the price ($ 46.99) its a 1 TB 7200RPM and 64MB cache over SATA III 6 Gb/s. To me it is one of those deals that exist for nothing fancy, but everything desirable for not that much money. If I just need an extra 1TB HDD that checks the boxes and I don’t want to spend $70+ for similar specifications or buy refurbished/open box deals this is a solid option among the choices.

For everyday desktop life it’s a solid choice that will get no complaints from me. I run my OS off of an M.2 drive with several different HDDs and SSDs are purposed for different tasks. I use the Toshiba drive as a stock footage backup for video clips, and miscellaneous.

Cons: No complaints

Other Thoughts: So far so good.
