UPDATED Review: Drive Failure.

Pros: REVIEW UPDATE:

Two months after initial review this drive has failed. Windows first started saying it appears to have malfunctioned and now it won't power up in windows or anything that gives it power. I decided to open it up since it's a review item and Toshiba doesn't do replacements no point trying to RMA something that only refunds money when I didn't pay for it.

The drive uses a unified logic board with USB 3.0 built in. In the past the hard drive logic board and the USB board were separate. Often with externals the USB board would go first well beyond the actual drive. So, when out of warranty you could just swap the boards or use as an internal drive. Well, you can't with Toshiba externals now. Yet another mark against them.

The drive was never dropped and was never moved while being plugged in. There no reason for the failure other than poor quality. Good thing I never stored anything worth keeping on it. I'd avoid all Toshiba externals now. Unified boards reduce consumer freedom and couple that with Toshiba's already horrible RMA service/options....Yep, I'd never pay for their externals now.

Original Review below:

• 1TB platter, lightweight, compact.

• Average, as expected performance.

• Virtually inaudible when active.

• Decent pricing for this type of drive.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
CrystalDiskMark 6.0.0 x64 (UWP) (C) 2007-2017

Sequential Read (Q= 32,T= 1) : 142.890 MB/s
Sequential Write (Q= 32,T= 1) : 160.510 MB/s
Random Read 4KiB (Q= 8,T= 8) : 0.551 MB/s [ 134.5 IOPS]
Random Write 4KiB (Q= 8,T= 8) : 4.310 MB/s [ 1052.2 IOPS]
Random Read 4KiB (Q= 32,T= 1) : 0.560 MB/s [ 136.7 IOPS]
Random Write 4KiB (Q= 32,T= 1) : 5.223 MB/s [ 1275.1 IOPS]
Random Read 4KiB (Q= 1,T= 1) : 0.412 MB/s [ 100.6 IOPS]
Random Write 4KiB (Q= 1,T= 1) : 4.981 MB/s [ 1216.1 IOPS]

Test : 1024 MiB [H: 15.1% (140.5/931.5 GiB)] (x5) [Interval=5 sec]

Cons: • Toshiba's website for RMA submissions does not recognize this drive and they don't seem to offer replacements anymore but rather visa gift cards instead. You also need proof of purchase whereas WD and Seagate do not. With WD and Seagate if you have the drive and it's within warranty you get it warrantied. Toshbia also requires you pay for shipping, competition does not for valid RMAs.

• Software encryption instead of hardware and the software isn't very good, either.

• 5400 RPM instead of 7200. With USB 3.0 being standard these days I see no reason not to use 7200 RPM drives now for 2.5 externals.

• No rubber feet or proper shock absorption means this drive is begging for problems since the cord can push it so easily.

Other Thoughts: Canvio line differences:

Basics: 1 year warranty, no software, matte finish

Advance: 2 year warranty, back up and security software, glossy finish

Premium: 3 year warranty, same software, Aluminum finish, USB-C adapter

All three use the same 1 TB platters and hardware underneath. Only arbitrary differences, which I don't care for.

Overall, this drive is perfectly average nothing that sets above or below standard 1TB platter drives. However with Toshiba changing how they RMA drives and there already being a headache with the website not recognizing this drive, I'd steer clear unless this was much cheaper than the competition.

Good little portable drive

Pros: Great price for a 1tb portable. Easy to use on the go storage for anyone. The transfer speeds and OK and expected for a USB 3.0 speeds. I got 130 to 150 Mbs reads and just under that for writes. Load times for movies was at least adequate and was seamless. It's small and it looks nice. No issues with formatting, worked well.

Cons: I have no Cons for this drive.

Other Thoughts: I typically have a lot more to say on the pro and con sides but to be honest this is straight up you get what you pay for. It's worth every penny you will spend but there is nothing spectacular about it. You could get a portable ssd but have to spend a lot more cash for those speeds. Whether or not that is worth it is up to the individual. If you need one I would recommend it.

Fast Portable Hard Drive

Pros: This is my first Toshiba portable external drive. I have several other portable drives of this type made by other manufacturers. So I have a really good basis for comparison. I use these types of drives a lot. I make back up copies of all of my games, which are getting huge these days with an average of 50-100 GB each. I also make back up copies of all my movies, TV shows, music, photos and documents. That means I need a ton of storage. I was thinking the other day and I counted I have around 40 TB of storage in a number of external hard drives. The toughest thing is keeping track of where everything is at. I actually had to create an index to keep track of all my files.
I tend to share a lot of my media with my dad and sister, so portable drives like this one fit that need perfectly. They're small and don't require any external power source. I typically put it in a small carrying case with the USB cable and send it on it's way. It's plug and play so anybody can figure out how to use it. However the most important thing for me is speed. The less time I have to sit around waiting for file transfers, the quicker I can move on to the next task. This Toshiba portable external hard drive is so far the fastest one I have yet tested. Using AS SSD as a benchmark with a large file it scored 142 MB/sec in sequential reads and 133 MB/sec in sequential writes. With Crystal Disk Mark it scored 149 MB/sec reads and 155 MB/sec writes. Which is really impressive for a small form factor external hard drive. Typically, the drives I have tested previously have barely broken the 100 MB/sec barrier. So this drive leaves them in the dust for speed. And at the end of the day, if everything else is equal, if they're the same capacity and they're the same style drive. The only thing that separates them is how fast is this drive? And this Toshiba drive blew away the competition by a large margin.
This drive is USB 3.0 compatible and takes full advantage of its bandwidth. It has a nice little blue LED status indicator light. Which is always nice to be able to tell if your drive is active before you unplug it. With these portable drives, I don't waste my time ejecting them from Windows as long as they're not active at that moment. I've never had a problem just unplugging them, but I'm always careful to not do it while it's being written to or read from. This drive comes with a 2 year warranty.

Cons: This drive seems kind of light, like it could easily be damaged if you dropped it. It doesn't come with any kind of software if that's important to you. The USB 3.0 out port is kind of loose. In my experience those types of ports almost always start off as stiff and tight. So, it may have been designed that way or maybe it's just a cheap connector.

Other Thoughts: Given the convenience of this style drive and it's performance, this drive comes at a really good price point. Although, above 1 TB, with drives like these, is where prices really start to drop. Going to a 2 TB drive, which is double the capacity of this one, is only an extra 50% more in price. And GB per dollar continues to drop the higher the capacity of the drive, to a certain extent.
I didn't really have any major complaints. My cons are really just nit picking. I have no need for any software with my drive. This is a pure data drive. It's a portable external hard drive in the perfect form, no external power source required, it's compact and it's fast. Exactly what I need. I'm gonna give this drive 4 stars. I'm really happy with it, but it just doesn't quite meet the criteria for best in class for every potential buyer.

Good, Portable, Nice Looking Drive

Pros: I have a large assortment of portable USP hard drives. The external hard drive market has been saturated for a while now for 1TB capacity USB portable drives. Therefore, pretty much all of them offer similar performance and are similar in price. As a result, what makes one portable hard drive stand out from the rest is warranty, bundled freebies, and appearance. From my experience, they are all equally reliable at this point.

Toshiba makes these drives more appealing by offering different color options in an attempt to stand in with the sea of other portable hard drives. The red of the model I received is a true deep red the pictures on Newegg display and is one of the better looking portable drives. The hard drive activity light is blue, but it’s quite muted which is welcome.

Performance-wise, I ran all of the usual synthetic benchmarks on the drive (DiskMark, ATTO, and HDTach) and it comes up with typical numbers for a 5400 rpm spinner although this one is on the faster side of the bell curve for these types of drives: ~142 MB/s read and write. The synthetic benchmarks translated to similar performance when transferring actual data files to the drive.

The S.M.A.R.T. data indicates the drive had been powered up three times before I received it. This suggests Toshiba is performing some type of QC on the drive before sending it out which is nice to see. I’ve seen drives from other manufacturers that have been powered on only once before reaching my hands.

Cons: The glossy plastic is a fingerprint and scratch magnet. Also, it would be nice to have rubber bumper feet on the bottom of the enclosure to prevent the drive from slipping around on surfaces.

I really have nothing bad to say about this drive. It’s priced right, it’s made by a reputable manufacturer, and it works right out of the box.

Other Thoughts: The drive arrives pre-formatted NTFS and contains no bundled software. It does contain a link to the Toshiba website where one can download free versions of backup and encryption software for the drive.

The model of the 2.5” drive in the unit I received is a Toshiba model MQ04UBF100. This Canvio “Advance” model comes with a 2 year warranty, which is double that of the Canvio “Basic” drives, but is less than the 3 year warranty that comes with the Canvio “Premium” drives.

Decent low cost drive

Pros: Toshiba's drive is compact, portable and reasonably fast for a 5400 RPM drive. The included backup software provides very basic functionality, but is not anything I would count on.

I was more impressed with the packaging. Toshiba went the minimalist route; a shell barely larger than the HDD itself and a short cable to connect to your computer. This drive is definitely not designed to live on your desk. Instead think of it as either a backup or storage extension for use while not at the office or home. It holds a TB of data and takes up minimal space.

Toshiba touts the backup software and it is indeed semi-functional. That said, I can't recommend using it - see Cons below. The encryption software, on the other hand, worked well. Depending on the horsepower of your CPU, encryption may or may not cause noticeable slowdowns on file transfers. It did not tax either a Core i7 notebook or a Core i% NUC, but a slow Celeron based PC dragged with encryption enabled.

I saw much the same transfer speeds as other reviewers note. About in line with a 5400 rpm drive. At least Toshiba uses the native Win 10 USB 3 protocols so you are not limited by the bus speed. Getting a faster drive will definitely cost you more than the Canvio.

Cons: My experience with the backup software was mixed at best. Backing up and retrieving files and folders was simple on Win 10 Pro systems. Note that the software complains if you have any Education or Enterprise version of Windows.

Toshiba crams all backups into a single file. There is no provision for only saving X versions of a file or deleting files that have been removed from the computer for some length of time. The Canvio drive will just keep filling up. The only option is to delete the backup entirely.

Both the manual and the backup software dialogs stress not ;letting your computer sleep, hibernate, or shut down while a backup is in progress. Toshiba does not give an option for preventing sleep mode while the backup is in progress - note to Toshiba: read the SetThreadExecutionState documentation on MSDN - and instead recommend changing your power plan each time a backup is run.

Being curious, I let my computer sleep during a backup. Sure enough, there was a reason for Toshiba's dire warnings. The entire backup file was corrupted, not just the current version. If you want to use the Canvio for backups, either use the built-in Windows backup utilities, buy sensible software, or just copy the relevant files manually.

Other Thoughts: Other reviewers commented on the short USB cable. I see this as Toshiba going for portability rather than designing a drive that lives on your desk. The Canvio drive is lightweight and has no added thickness from anti-skid feet so it will fly with the lightest of taps.

If you want portable storage on a budget, Toshiba has you covered. ust don't use their backup software.

Great little drive with impressive speeds

Pros: It's weird to say it, but it's probably the sleekest and coolest looking hard drive I've ever used. The Ferrari red is very striking.

Has a disk activity light, and it isn't a spotlight to boot. Disk activity lights used to be everywhere, then companies took them out to make their products look cool. Now they're back since they serve a very useful and practical purpose. Bonus points for it not falling into the trap so many other lights fall into in that they're annoyingly bright.

It's also very tiny since it has a 2.5" drive inside the enclosure. This will easily tuck into a laptop bag pocket.

USB-powered, so it's easy to pack away into a bag and plug in without the fuss of a separate power cable.

Cons: Only 5400 RPM, but that helps keep it cool and quiet, possibly lengthening its lifespan if you have it plugged in and constantly being used.

Not USB-C. That's kind of become the de facto way everybody is going, but I suppose 99% of people don't have systems ready for that yet, so I can see why it isn't present here. Not future-proof, but much better at legacy support.

Speaking of USB, the cable's pretty short, maybe two feet or so. You'll need to keep this close to your computer unless you buy a longer cable separately.

It's a bit slippery on a desk, but as long as you don't have it near the edge of your desk or whack it too hard with anything you'll be OK.

Other Thoughts: Honestly, I wouldn't bother to use the free Toshiba backup or encryption software. Windows and OSX both have decent backup and disk encryption utilities that I would steer you towards since they're native to the OS and have better online support and documentation should you run into problems.

Comes pre-formatted to NTFS (which is good for Windows users), but it's easy enough to reformat if you have a Mac.

I copied and pasted a bunch of different filetypes and sizes to see what kind of transfer speed you'll get in real life, day-to-day use operations. I averaged about 127 MB/s write speed and 137 MB/s read speed when copying movie files to/from the drive. Not too shabby, and good enough for just about any normal use I'd say. Transfer speeds will be slower with smaller multiple files.

Comes with a two-year warranty. This is my first Toshiba drive, so I can't vouch for the lifetime of their hardware. Because of this, I'd recommend checking out other reviews on Newegg for Toshiba drives to determine how likely this thing is to break after it hits the two-year mark.

Overall, this is a good drive that delivers on everything you'd be looking for. It works well, and I've had no problems in the admittedly short time I've had it so far. If this checks the boxes on everything you want, I'd recommend buying it.

Nice drive

Pros: This is a small portable 1TB hard drive with backup software available as a download. It has USB 3.0 connectivity and an activity light. Power is provided via the USB cable.

The drive is physically attractive, being an unusual dark red with a high-gloss finish. It does not get very warm while in operation.

The backup software has a very simplistic interface but works. There's not a lot of granular control, though, and you can't set it to run continuously in the background and pick up incremental changes on the fly.

Cons: The included drive cable isn't very long at 20 inches.

The backup software works but you don't get a lot of options and there is no option for continuous backup on the fly in the background.

Other Thoughts: It's a nice drive, reasonably fast -- I clock it at 144.0 MB/s sustained read, and 131.3 MB/s sustained write. It's small and easy to carry around with you. For a single computer it's not a bad backup solution, but if you have multiple computers or need granular control, the included software may not prove useful.

Considered by itself, I would give the drive five starts. Removing one star because the backup software is disappointing.

This is as fast as a external spindle drive going to get

Pros: Very fast, quiet operation, real life file transfer rate is 143MB/s to 150MB/s consistently, this is tested on both a USB 3.0 and a USB 3.1 interface. The internal hard drive is the bottle neck on this drive, as USB 3.1 could not help a lick to boost the transfer rate. Since USB 3.0 tops out at about 640MB/s, this is not surprising.

Cons: None for a spindle drive, however, it is not a SSD, I have a SSD external drive that require a USB 3.1 to fully reach its potential and has sustain transfer rate of over 500MB/s, so the time for a spindle drive is limited, but a SSD external drive of this size would cost 5X the price.

Other Thoughts: For the price and the size of this drive, it's a no brainer if you want large external storage that's easy on the pocket and fast to boot.
