These compact, isolated USB to RS-232 and USB to RS-422, and RS-485 converters allow you to add an asynchronous serial port to your USB only PC. The built in 2 kV isolation protects your port from dangerous ground loops. They are perfect for connecting to remote devices or programming ports in field service applications. They are USB 2.0 compatible. Model USO9ML2 is the RS-232 version and supports hand shake signals as well as data at speeds up to 460.8 Kbps. Model USOPTL4 is the RS-422 and RS-485 version and supports data rates up to 460.8 Kbps. RS-485 2-Wire and 4-Wire modes are selected using a DIP Switch. If you don't need isolation, use model USPTL4. Windows operating systems up to Windows 7 (32 and 64 bit) are supported. The USOPTL4 is equipped with our signature high retention USB port. The RS-422/485 versions have a removable terminal block. The B&B USOPTL4 is an isolated USB-to-RS-422/485 serial adapter for connecting a USB-equipped PC to industrial or other serial devices, making it suitable for field-service technicians and users working with remote equipment or programming ports.

Recommended For

  • Field-service technicians connecting a laptop to remote RS-422/485 equipment can use the removable terminal block and USB-powered, isolated serial connection for on-site diagnostics or configuration.
  • Industrial maintenance staff troubleshooting PLCs or other RS-485 equipment from a PC may value the electrical isolation, transmit/receive LEDs, and terminal-block wiring; a PLC community user also reported stable use on a plasma table.
  • Lab and instrumentation users who need to connect a USB-only computer to a single RS-422/485 instrument can use the adapter as a one-port serial interface, with isolation intended to help protect against ground-loop issues.
  • Technicians or engineers working at a fixed PC with legacy RS-422/485 devices can use it to add one serial COM port over USB, provided the computer’s operating system and driver requirements are verified first.

Real-World Use Scenarios

  • A technician uses a Windows laptop and Honeywell FLAMETOOLS-PC to connect to compatible industrial flame-monitoring signal processors; Honeywell’s installation guide specifically recommends the USOPTL4 for this RS-422/485 connection.
  • During Modbus RTU troubleshooting, a technician connects a field device to a laptop and uses Modbus software to test it individually; the adapter provides the USB-to-RS-485 link, while device settings and wiring still need to match.
  • A controls technician connects a laptop to an existing two-wire RS-485 network to communicate with compatible equipment; the terminal-block wiring and selectable two-wire mode support this setup, provided the network wiring and communication settings are correct.
  • When a PC is connected to RS-422/485 equipment in an electrically noisy installation, the adapter’s isolation can help limit electrical coupling between the USB computer and serial device; it does not replace correct wiring or network protection.
  • While checking a serial connection, a user watches the transmit and receive LEDs to see whether data activity is occurring; the indicators can help with basic checks but do not show message contents or confirm that the device is responding correctly.
