The StarTech.com HDMIDVIMM10 is a 10 ft. male-to-male cable for connecting an HDMI source to a DVI-D display, or a DVI-D source to an HDMI display, for video. It suits users bridging those digital video connections, such as connecting a laptop to a monitor or projector.
Recommended For
- People connecting an HDMI-equipped laptop or desktop to a DVI-D monitor for a video-only workstation or secondary display. The cable carries digital video in either direction; audio needs a separate path.
- People reusing a DVI-D monitor with a computer or other device that has HDMI, when they want a direct cable connection instead of a separate adapter.
- People connecting a DVI-D video source to an HDMI display for a digital-video setup, such as a computer-to-TV or projector connection, where the devices support compatible video modes.
- People who need several feet of reach between a computer and a DVI monitor or projector; the 10-foot length can suit a desk or room setup where the devices are not close together.
Real-World Use Scenarios
- Connect an HDMI-equipped laptop to an older DVI-D monitor for a larger work or study screen; video can display on the monitor if both devices support a compatible display mode.
- Connect an HDMI-output laptop or computer to a DVI-equipped projector for a class, meeting, or presentation; the cable carries video, while audio may need a separate connection.
- Connect a DVI-D desktop graphics output to an HDMI monitor or TV when the computer and display have mismatched ports; the display can show digital video without replacing either device.
- Connect an HDMI game console or media player to a DVI-D monitor to use the monitor as a screen; plan on separate audio output because DVI carries video only, and check that the console’s output mode is supported by the monitor.
- Reuse a DVI-D computer output with an HDMI-equipped display in a home-theater or shared-display setup; the cable supports the video connection, but it does not add HDMI audio to the DVI signal.
