FT-80x Series

10/100Base-TX to 100Base-FX Bridge Media Converters

Quick Summary

The PLANET FT-80x is a quick Ethernet Bridge 100Base-FX fiber to 10/100Base-TX shielded twisted pair (TP) converter. It provides an ideal way for building a network solution of FTTH (Fiber to the Home), FTTC (Fiber to the Curb) or FTTB (Fiber to the Building) for ISPs, campuses and enterprises.

The PLANET FT-80x supports both half-duplex and full-duplex operations and a variety of fiber options. It can automatically adapt to the highest level of performance supported by the device connected to the STP port. When the connected device is a switch or a workstation that supports full duplex, it adapts to the full-duplex mode and provides an effective 200Mbps bandwidth. When the connected device is a hub or a workstation that supports only half duplex, it adapts to the half-duplex mode and provides the nominal 100Mbps bandwidth.

The PLANET FT-80x offers a manual option in the fiber optic interface that allows for complete control over half and full duplex modes. The fiber port of the converter operates at 1310 nm and uses ST, SC, MTRJ, VF45 or WDM connectors. The multi-mode models support distances up to 2km. The single-mode models support distances up to 15/20/35/50/60km.

The PLANET FT-80x is with LFP (Link Fault Pass-through function which includes LLCF and LLR and the DIP switch design. The DIP switch provides the disabling or enabling of the LFP function. LLCF/LLR can immediately alert administrators to the problem of the link media and provide efficient solution to monitoring the net.

LLCF (Link Loss Carry Forward) means when a device is connected to the converter and the TP line loses the link, the converter's fiber will disconnect the link of transmission. LLR (Link Loss Return) means when a device is connected to the converter and the fiber line loses the link, the converter's fiber will disconnect the transmission link.

Applications

Standalone and Centralized Management Media Converter Installation

To meet the demand for the growing network, PLANET FT-80x has provided the advanced media conversion technology. The FT-80x media converter provides various fiber connecting types to meet different network applications.

The PLANET FT-801 is a 10/100Base-TX-to-100Base-FX media converter for network installers and IT teams connecting copper Ethernet equipment to multimode fiber over distances up to 2 km using an ST connection.

Recommended For

  • Small-office or campus network installers extending a 10/100 Mbps Ethernet connection over existing multimode fiber with ST connectors, for links up to 2 km in full-duplex mode.
  • IT technicians connecting a Fast Ethernet switch, workstation, or other 10/100Base-TX device to a compatible 100Base-FX multimode fiber link.
  • Network administrators troubleshooting fixed fiber links who want Link Fault Pass-through behavior to help indicate a copper- or fiber-side link failure.
  • Facilities or network teams reusing installed multimode fiber in a building or site where a compact, standalone copper-to-fiber bridge is needed rather than a managed switch.

Real-World Use Scenarios

  • To connect a switch or other Ethernet device in a nearby building to the main network over existing multimode fiber, use an FT-801 at the copper end and a compatible 100BASE-FX connection at the other end; this can extend the link without running Ethernet copper between the locations.
  • When an older 10/100 Ethernet device needs to join a fiber-backed campus or enterprise network, the FT-801 can bridge its RJ45 connection to a compatible 100BASE-FX multimode link, letting the device remain in service without adding a fiber port to it.
  • For a remote 10/100 IP camera with a wired Ethernet port, the FT-801 can carry network traffic over a compatible multimode fiber run back to the network; the camera and converter still need power at the remote end, since this converter does not provide PoE.
  • In a network closet serving several fiber links, the FT-801 can be installed as a standalone converter or in a compatible PLANET media-converter chassis, making it possible to centralize converter placement and power rather than placing every unit separately.
  • When a fiber or copper link fails, enabling Link Fault Pass-through can help network staff identify which side of the media-converter link has lost connectivity, reducing guesswork during basic fault checks.
