The Rain Design mTower Space Grey is a vertical laptop riser for people who use a closed laptop with an external monitor and want to free up desk space; Newegg says it takes up about a third of the laptop’s footprint.
Recommended For
- People who keep a compatible laptop closed and connected to an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse can use the mTower to create a compact desktop setup and reclaim desk space.
- MacBook owners with a mostly stationary home or office desk can use the vertical design to take up less desk space than leaving the laptop open on the surface.
- Users of MacBooks or other notebooks that fit the stand’s supported dimensions can use it to store the closed laptop upright; check the laptop’s thickness and fit, especially if it has a protective case.
- People who want a tidy, fixed desktop arrangement and more open space around a docked laptop may appreciate the stand’s upright placement and open airflow around the device.
Real-World Use Scenarios
- At a home-office desk with an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse, the user closes the laptop and docks it vertically; the laptop can run the desk setup while taking up less room than it would sitting open.
- On a crowded or minimalist desk, the user parks a closed laptop upright instead of leaving it flat; this frees workspace for a keyboard, mouse, notebook, or other desk items.
- In a multi-display workstation, the user keeps the laptop closed beside an ultrawide or larger monitor; the laptop stays available as the computer while the external screen is the main viewing surface.
- For a semi-permanent desk setup, the user leaves the laptop connected to its monitor and peripherals between work sessions; the upright stand keeps the closed laptop in a compact, easy-to-access place, though cables remain visible.
- When a laptop sits closed on the desk for extended periods, the user raises it off the surface and leaves air space around it; this can improve circulation, but the stand should not be treated as a guarantee against overheating.
