Real-World Use Scenarios
- When a network link must transition between multimode and single-mode fiber, install compatible SFPs on both sides; the converter carries the link at the same data rate, rather than converting its speed.
- To add a fiber connection to a CWDM transport path, use the S3100 as a wavelength transponder with SFPs matched to the required wavelengths; the surrounding CWDM equipment and optics must also be compatible.
- For a fiber link carrying a supported service such as SONET, Fibre Channel, or InfiniBand, use the converter to repeat the signal between fiber segments without changing the service protocol; both sides must use matching line rates.
