I bought this, hoping to have two computers hooked up to the net..... does not work... what to do? is it a bad cable?

No, it's not a bad cable. I made the same mistake. Unfortunately, this Ethernet splitter does not work like a phone splitter. It is meant for something else that I am to sure of, but it doesn't split a network like one would think.

The only way to truly split an Internet signal is through a network switch or a router.

Question 2

If I use this 2 to 1 adapter with an ethernet coupler will it allow me to plug two computers into the network ethernet cord connection and be online simultaneously?

If I need to re-wire it, as several of the customer reviews suggest, do you have a schematic I could download to work off?

I'm not knowledgeable on networking, but I wanted good throughput, and my reading said that a splitter would half that.  What I got was a TP-LINK TL-SF1005D 10/100Mbps 5-Port Unmanaged Desktop Switch, (or equiv) setup as follows:
2 cables from modem to router then 1 cable of x-length to switch then 1 cable each to separate computers.

My setup went from modem/router to powerline/in adapter to powerline/out adapter to computers.

Hope I didn't muddy the waters.

Does this work as simply as plugging the male end into an ethernet outlet to split the signal? Or is it more complicated than that?

It is more complicated than that. I bought this with that idea in my head and the signal did not split. Only one of the splitters works at a time so it won't work the way you think.

What is the wiring diagram for this? How do the 8-wires of CAT5E get split into 2 pairs of 4-wire

I do not know of the wiring diagram, but if you are looking to split the Internet connection, this will not work. It is meant for phone lines that use a CAT5E connection.
