USB powered gadgets such as fans and reading lights are increasingly popular. They're compact and don't require a wall receptacle, meaning you can use them anywhere. For your home or office, there are also USB hubs that increase the number of ports available at your workstation, and USB computer chargers for ongoing power. If you need to share USB desk gadgets with more computers, you can use a USB switch or sharing device.

USB and Micro USB Fans Keep You Cool at the Office or While Traveling

USB fans can be a compact, cheap solution to fight the summer heat at the office. They come in all shapes and colors, and are extremely easy to use. Just plug the fan into your computer and enjoy the breeze. When traveling, you can plug these tiny cooling devices into a power bank, and they will take up minimal space in your luggage. Along with Micro USB fans that work with your smartphone, there are USB chargers and power banks available as well.

USB Docking Stations Add More Ports to Your PC

The increase in USB desk gadgets is the direct result of improved technology, but the tech comes with challenges. Most laptops only have two or three USB ports, but with the increasing number of USB computer accessories we use everyday, many people need more. The solution is a USB docking station, which lets you connect multiple gadgets to your laptop. Powered docking stations can connect to an AC outlet, so they can power more devices at the same time. Non-powered docking stations use the battery of your laptop as a power source, so you'll only be able to connect a limited number of USB powered gadgets.

USB Powered Reading Lamps Are Convenient and Portable

Like the original USB flash drive gadget, you don't necessarily need an AC outlet for a gadget to light your workstation. There are plenty of USB reading lamps that come in different sizes and designs. They feature one or more LED lights to illuminate the keyboard while typing or gaming. Most models have flexible goosenecks, so you'll be able to reposition the LED light to reduce glare on the screen. Most USB powered LED lamps are compact and lightweight, so they're particularly suitable for travelers.

USB Switches Allow Sharing Mice, Keyboards and Printers Between Computers

USB switches let you use your USB powered gadgets, such as mice and keyboards, with two computers. There's no need to add both computers to the same network or constantly plug and unplug the devices. Most USB switches come with several ports to accommodate USB computer accessories.

USB Extenders Circumvent the Length Limitation of USB Cables

USB cables have a maximum length of approximately 16ft. 5in. (5m). If you need more length to connect your devices, you can use a USB extension cable. Passive USB extension cables can only transfer data up to 16ft. Active USB extensions have boosters that allow transferring data over greater distances. There are also USB over Cat5 extenders, which use the Cat5 cable you already have at home to transfer data.
