Pros: - WD Brand quality.
- Huge size not a huge price price.
- Easily recognized, formatted, and set up.
- 5 Year Warranty.
- Not running long enough to speak to their reliability, but have had good luck with WD over the years.
Cons: - Harder to find a large selection of platter drives.
Was not happy with the packing from Newegg, they are not as careful as the were in the past, cost cutting I guess. They packed 3 WD drives in with 36 pounds of other computer components, single boxed, thin walled, with 2 of the hard drives against the walls; absorbing the shock of shipment. These should have been shipped separately with padding or in a double walled box also padded. Thousands of dollars in equipment and they can't afford to ship it correctly? I have always used and recommended Newegg, they are starting to skimp on the things that made them great in the first place, (prices are creeping up, items are not boxed and shipped properly, not all items come from Newegg, and when working with many items I have not caught it, and other things I prefer not to get into at this time.
- Not the fastest drive in the world, but if like my other WD drives reliable.
Overall Review: If it is like other WD Drives I have had, lasting 8 years running 24/7 it would be a resounding yes.
Pros: Great Size
Worked Well When It Worked
Cons: Died between 9 and 12 Months
Overall Review: First I'll start by saying that the Western Digital website states that this drive is rated for "enterprise-class reliability, capacity, power efficiency and performance." This has not been my experience.
I bought this drive to hold my media for my Plex server. For those of you that don't know what that is, think personally owned and operated Netflix. In the past two years, I have had two of these drives. The first lasted for only 9 months. There was not much warning before the drive failed. I had registered the drive at WD so I just got an RMA. That RMA drive is now failing also, one year later.
Pros: Selected for 5-year enterprise-class warranty driven by 20 years' IT experience.
Cons: Out of box, drive spun, but would not read; beeped repeatedly.
Overall Review: Properly packaged, no evidence of impact or damage during shipment. Prompt service by PlatinumMicro to resolve.
Pros: Quiet! Quiet! Fast! Really Fast! Maybe not quite as fast as a SSD, but FAST!
Overall Review: I have a late 2009 iMac that the 2 TB HDD (Hitachi) had just gotten to where it would not run. I was looking for a drive that would be reliabe and LAST a long time. I ran across the WD Gold and began reading the technical specs on this drive, AMAZING!! If the tech specs are correct, this drive should last me, and future owners 1900+ years. And that is while runing 50 TB through it per day!! Tech specs predicted the life of this drive at 2MILLION 500 thousand hours!!
I own several of the WD External drives and have never had any issues. Installed this drive and I am not looking back. THANKS WD!!
Pros: Western Digital makes reliable drives. This is no exception.
Cons: Pricier than cheaper manufacturers, but worth it.
Pros: Very very FAST with 128 MB cache and 7200 RPM - great product
Cons: No real cons, except that this HD is a bit noisy, but I already knew that before purchase. Enterprise HDs are usually a bit "loud" when reading/writing, otherwise 100% silent.
Hasn't failed after one year of heavy use.
Cons: A little noisier than I would like and used to for Western Digital drives.
Runs a little hotter than other drives I've used.
Overall Review: I use two of these drives in a System Information and Event Management Server where they are under an average load of 55% with regular spikes during the day to 100%, are on 24/7, and they haven't missed a beat. They're a bit clicky and need a fan to keep the drive temperature down, so the firmware doesn't slow the disk rotation speed.
Pros: -Great price
Cons: -it is loud when transferring large files
-a bit slow when loading up
Overall Review: Overall pretty happy with the product because of the good price compared to the massive amount of storage and good reliability so far after 1 year (zero problems with the hard drive so far). The only drawback is it can be a bit slow and loud when loading big files. However, using this hard drive myself for the purposes of storing collections of movies, pictures, old games etc... I would recommend it.
