Good but not Great 7/24/2015 2:49:27 PM

Pros: I know laptops very well... But when i bought this one it didn't meet my expectations. However, It is really fast for productivity. I recommend this for school usage or business usage.

Cons: Bugs on bluetooth, Processor for this price is irrelevant it could have been I5 :(.

Overall Review: Anyways, Asus make good laptops and it doesn't dissappoint you.

Very good small laptop 12/5/2014 9:01:23 AM

Pros: -Good construction, not flimsy plastic
-Can upgrade hard drive to SSD
-Keyboard feels very nice to type on and is responsive
-Touchpad is also very nice.
-i3 is deceptively fast
-Screen is good, not great, but good
-HDMI port
-Touchscreen is very very good, works with Windows 8, 7, and Ubuntu 12.04 and 14.04 (tested)
-Speakers are good for something this small

Cons: -Battery life isnt that long, also not replaceable with a better one
-Screen could be better really
-Value is extraordinary
-Decent aftermarket support (keyboard covers and shells etc.)

Overall Review: I bought this laptop to replace a Lenovo B575 that had died (still trying to fix) as a budget laptop, so that is what I was comparing to among the other laptops I had in the past (Gateway M-Series, Mid-2007 Macbook)

Last year finals were coming up and the old Macbook I had kicked the bucket. I needed a cheap laptop fast. I decided on ASUS since they make some of the best computer parts out there that you can buy and the laptop had better construction in terms of materials than the other laptop I was loking at, which was an Acer 15.6 with a touchscreen.

As seen to the left I am not a verified owner since I did not buy the laptop from Newegg, but from Best Buy, so I have the Q200E model (exact same sans bluetooth). I figured I would give my 2 cents.

For awhile I ran the original 500GB Hitachi hard drive, which was decently quick once it was booted up. I then picked up a Samsung 840 SSD and tried to move over my Windows 8 install, but Windows 8 was being difficult, so I decided to install Ubuntu 12.04 and run that solely.

Ubuntu ran great with the touchscreen and the SSD. I didnt need to install any extra drivers or jump through any hoops to get it to work. The wireless even worked out of the box.

I then decided to dual boot Windows 8.1 and Ubuntu 14.04, again both worked without error. I needed to be able to run apps for engineering so Windows is needed. The dual boot worked great as well!

Currently, the laptop is solely running Windows 7. I am contemplating the upgrade to a larger SSD so that I can run both Ubuntu and Windows 7 and still have my engineering apps. Windows 7 works great, and all of the Windows 8 drivers install onto the computer without flaw.

As for gaming, I have a tower for that, but this computer is good for on the go light gaming. I've played Counter Strike, Morrowind, and a few other lightweight low storage games, since the SSD I have is not large. Hearthstone runs like a charm...when its not overheating.

There are a few flaws with this laptop though. Heat is a problem. When playing a game like Hearthstone on a flat table, the laptop can reach 85-90C and throttle itself. The last time I cleaned for dust was about 4 months ago but there shouldnt be that much dust. I am going to look for a cooling solution online, as there are some to be had. A laptop stand wouldnt be a bad idea either.

Battery life has me wishing for an extended battery, it last about 4 hours with normal usage (word docs and Google Chrome). Battery life seems to be slightly better with Windows 7.

Overall I really like this laptop. The build construction makes it rugged, and with a SSD you dont have to worry about breaking it. It feels solid using it and not flimsy. The touchscreen works and the computer supports a multitude of operating systems. I got it for $300 and at that price it was a steal.

Fantastic ultraportable after some minor modifications 7/15/2014 11:46:03 AM

Pros: Lightweight aluminum construction, USB 3.0, rubberized bottom plate, thin without sacrificing critical I/O ports, plenty of RAM, SATA-III support, and a very good ULV CPU make this laptop hard to turn down. Battery life for the internal battery's size is excellent (over 4 hours of typical usage). Replace the internal hard drive with a decent SATA-III SSD and it boots from ASUS logo to Windows 7 desktop in 10 seconds, and allows for browsing with Pale Moon (Firefox) in another 6. The Ivy Bridge ULV CPU+GPU is crazy fast for the measly 10 Watt TDP.

Cons: This laptop has a poorly engineered heatsink from the factory. It is a copper plate with a tiny fan; no heatpipes or fins at all. The CPU die is designed to handle up to 90C temperatures but enters thermal throttling in the mid-80s, and the poor cooling means this happens fairly often, slowing the entire system down just when performance is needed the most. Fortunately, searching for "fix X202E overheating" reveals tutorials on how to fix the bad heatsink design, and with a fixed cooling system the unit runs MUCH better.

Overall Review: If you need an ultraportable laptop that can take a minor beating in a padded bag and packs much more power than other 11"-12" class laptops, this laptop is a fantastic deal and a very solid buy. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you plan to (A) budget in a 7mm 120GB SATA-III SSD and (B) perform the heatsink fix ASAP. With those two modifications, this laptop is the perfect ultraportable laptop, bar none.

Asus is the worst 5/30/2014 12:33:11 PM

Pros: The physical design was solid. Price.

Cons: This is my nightmare with this device. Purchased in early April. Couldn't upgrade to 8.1 because of stupid trackpad drivers interfering. Went to attempt a fresh W8 reinstall, but the BIOS wasn't detecting any devices..not even the hard drive. Sent it into ASUS for repair. After weeks, they finally looked at it and gave me the old canned line "hard drives bad." I argued and said no, the BIOS is the problem. Just make sure the BIOS will boot and send it back, let me worry about the hard drive. A week later I get an e-mail saying that the item is being shipped back to me without any service performed.

Overall Review: A nightmare from start to finish. I had an Asus tablet years ago and it was also junk. I think I've learned my lesson. Not only does Asus make shoddy products, but I've learned first-hand that their customer service and repair departments are some of the worst you could possibly encounter.

I've worked in IT for a decade. I have call-center and PC repair background. I don't know everything (if I did, I wouldn't have had to send the laptop in for repair) but I do know that you don't treat clients the way that Asus has treated me. The silver-lining is that I went back to a Chromebook and I absolutely love it. Not an Asus Chromebook, of course. I went with the Acer C720 and it's a fantastic machine for the price.

Very poor support 5/26/2014 9:16:16 AM

Pros: Very light

Cons: The support from ASUS is very poor. The OS wouldn't boot up after using this for 8 momths. The Recovery disk I created after receiving it wouldn't boot either. I had a CHAT with ASUS to see if I could get a recovery disk and they said I would have to call Microsoft. Microsoft said that I would have to buy a new operating system. The lesson here is that if you have to reinstall the operating system from other than the created recovery disk or the recovery partition, you will have to buy another copy of Windows 8.

Great Small Laptop 3/5/2014 2:22:59 PM

Pros: Boots up very fast (less than 15 sec), with a SSD of course.
Sturdy construction.

Cons: Touch Pad a little jumpy and erratic. Limited Battery life (3-4 hours), even with a Samsung 840 SSD. CPU cooler fan a little noisy. Even with a SSD, you can hear a humming background from the fan, even when the CPU is not loaded. Without the fan, its battery might last hours longer with a SSD.

Overall Review: I replaced the HDD with a 500 GB Samsung 840 SSD. Using this for my out of town trips

looks nice, cheap price, cheap quality 1/20/2014 2:47:30 AM

Pros: nice looking smaller size ultrabook at cheap price when it's on sale

Cons: Keyboard problems, when press one keystroke it come up two or three difference characters, send in for repair two times with this same problem, still few function keys not working properly. This is the only laptop I had for repair during the first year ownership, Asus had QC problem.

Keep the keyboard perfectly dry 12/15/2013 11:55:57 PM

Pros: It was fast, and had an easy hard drive change

Cons: Ram not upgradable, came with windows 8, spilled a little water on the keyboard and it fried.

Overall Review: I picked mine up here refurbished in the spring for using while on the road, a couple days after the warranty expired, sitting at a coffee shop and someone bumps the table. A little bit of water splashes down onto the keyboard so I shut down the computer as quickly as I could. Let the computer dry out in warm room face down for 24 hours and go to start it up. I have the flashing green light but that's it. Wait another 24 hours and then nothing. I will admit that dumping a bottle of water is excessive but not the mouthful that fell on this thing. My Dell survived half a coffee and still works fine, you'd think Asus would be better than Dell in every way. I still swear by Asus with their desktop hardware, just a little unsure about the durability of their laptops.
