Works good 99% of the time 1/31/2020 5:48:13 AM

Pros: Nice backlit keyboard
Runs well
SSD boots up within 5 seconds

Cons: Battery life is atrocious
The screen will turn black at random (sometimes twice a day, then might go weeks)--the computer is still running the screen is just completely off and the whole computer has to be reset

Overall Review: If it's on sale buy it. I wouldn't buy it again.

Sleek, Fast, and Efficient! 1/21/2020 12:41:04 PM

Pros: Thin design
Lightweight
Great performance
Thin bezel around the screen
Beautiful IPS screen

Cons: It is a real chore to access the internals if you want to upgrade anything.

Overall Review: Aesthetics:
I really love the thin design, and color options for this laptop. It screams sleek, and the thin bezel around the screen is much appreciated. The IPS screen is fantastic, with vivid colors, and good contrast.

Performance:
The performance is surprisingly great, with the quad core CPU packing plenty of oomph for everything I do regularly. The integrated GPU even does well in a pinch for some gaming, albeit on lower graphical settings. Battery life is very good (roughly 5-7 hours, depending on activity).

Design:
Highly portable design, and perfect for someone on the go. This is my new daily driver for my trek for home, and work. Extremely lightweight, and easy to carry. The only con for me is there isn't any sort of easy access panel for memory/SSD/wifi upgrades. You have to remove the entire bottom portion of the laptop case.

Upgrade options:
Inside you'll find two M.2 slots, one for SSD, one for Wifi, as well as a second (empty) memory slot. I've switched the SSD to a nice NVME model, and added an additional 8gb of DDR4. Immediately noticed a significant performance boost!

Overall, I really love the laptop. Great battery life, great performance, and a beautiful design. So happy with it!

Fast, light and all the spec's you need at a great price! 1/10/2020 10:11:30 AM

Pros: - Luv this little gem. Boots fast, great battery length (after putting power settings to max battery savings) and light weight. Love that it has the number pad which as a Realtor I need.
- Compact in that it fits a 15.6" screen in a 14" frame...What???
- Backlit keyboard is nice
- Titlted keyboard and nice feeling keys

Cons: - Number key pad digits are a little smaller closer together but that is to be expected so will have to get used to that but can't say its really a con when they have to squeeze everything in.

Overall Review: Great little laptop that has pretty much everything you need including SSD and number kepad that fits into a 14" frame so awesome to travel with.

Solid Performance w/ A few Caveats 12/24/2019 8:24:51 AM

Pros: Thin and fairly light.
Essential I/O including USB-C.
2nd RAM slot available to upgrade.
Quality Sandisk X600 SSD Included.
Respectable boot times for SATA SSD.
Fast charging as advertised; 60% in 49 min.
More than adequate sound from small speakers.
Matte finish FHD screen with good viewing angles.
Fantastic color combination; much better in person.
*Extremely* quiet fan even under extended high CPU load.
Solid performance from i5 which now has HyperThreading.
Large responsive track pad with fingerprint scanner built-in.
Backlit keyboard. Decent tactile feedback for minimal travel of keys.
Minimal bloatware installed; 4 ASUS branded programs and 3 from McAfee.
Good Intel Wi-Fi/NIC included; maxes out by broadband @ 250 MBps download.
Lower cover easily removed via 10 phillips screws & all major parts are serviceable.
Included ASUS software detects, downloads and installs BIOS updates from Windows.
ErgoLift function tilts keyboard to a more usable/comfortable position simply by opening laptop.

Cons: Have an intermittent & re-occurring issue freezing @ ASUS logo on reboots/cold boots. This requires a hard reset to remedy.

Wi-Fi was inoperable, even though networks were detected, during initial setup & when first accessing the desktop.

Popups from McAfee and ASUS software *immediately* after internet connection was up.

Ancient American Megatrends BIOS. The same blue/grey one you have seen for the last..forever..years…but I guess if it ain’t broke don’t fix it?

While the A/C adapter is quite small, it is orientated incorrectly and can still interfere with other outlet(s); Just rotate it 90°.

Integrated graphics severely lacking compared to Ryzen/Vega competition; look elsewhere even if you want to do light gaming.

Large update requiring reinstall of Windows. Version 1809 to 1909

Unused area for 2.5 HDD leaves an opportunity for larger battery.

Intake for heatsink/fan on the bottom of the laptop which could cause issues pending where it is left sitting; i.e. couch, bed, or on top of a blanket/clothes etc.

Top/Bottom covers are annoying fingerprint magnets.

Numpad is rather compact; could take some getting used to. PgUp/PgDn/Home/End keys on Numpad only usable with NUM LOCK off. PgUp/PgDn/Home/End are on F9-F12, but this isn't the most convenient location. If you plan to use the NumPad regularly this could be problematic.

NUM LOCK key lacking LED indicator.

Not a PCIe SSD.

Overall Review: Overall solid laptop for average tasks that checks nearly all the right 'boxes' along with nice creature comforts for a reasonable price. For an average user with an aging PC/Laptop, this would be a nearly trouble free plug-n-play upgrade.

Build quality & fit/finish is nice for the price point. Everything is plastic aside from top cover which I think is anodized aluminum. Top/bottom covers are big fingerprint magnets.

Not everyone will love this color combination, but it does very nice in person.

Wi-Fi inoperable, even though networks were detected, during initial setup & when first accessing the desktop. Disconnecting and reconnecting to the network solved this issue.

Removed all of the McAfee apps immediately; LiveSafe, WebAdvisor & Personal Security. There is a $15 discount available for LiveSafe if you want it.

ASUS Software included Giftbox, Hello, MyASUS and keyboard/hotkeys. Removed GiftBox since it's a program with coupons for various apps; adobe, office apps, photo apps, dropbox, webcam, language translation, web storage etc.

Hello is for product/account registration. MyASUS is described as: "Provides update management, optimize settings, find solutions, member promotions and support services related to customer service." Both require an ASUS account and granting access to your Windows account info. I left MyASUS/Hello for registration of laptop.

ASUS app automatically downloaded BIOS/firmware after first reboot that took ~3 minutes to complete.

After 26 updates & 3 reboots a major Win version update was prompted. Upgrade from OCT ‘18 ver 1809 to NOV ‘19 ver 1909. 39 min for the D/L & setup with 25 min install. Only 1 update thereafter.

ASUS claims 60% charge in 49 min. Ran laptop down where it forced sleep. Set a timer and charged for 49 minutes. I unplugged & rebooted to find that the laptop had 60% charge; not bad at all.

Although the included SSD essentially maxes out SATA speeds, PCIe would have been nice. There aren’t many laptops in this price point with them, but I found a couple.

BIOS can be tricky to access with fast POST. Must press & hold F2 immediately after power on. Literally have 1 second to do so. Task Manager lists the BIOS time at a blisteringly fast 1.1 sec.

Cold boot in ~23 sec. ~6 sec shut down. Sleep/Resume near instantaneous even with 12 apps up.

Solid performance from this i5 which is a 4 core, 8 thread CPU. CPU-Z synthetic stress test gave ~25 seconds of 3.6 GHz all core boost; then drops down to 2.7-2.8 GHz. Not certain if it is thermal or power throttle, however ASUS did exquisitely with near silent heatsink even under extended max load.

Matte finish screen reduces glare substantially even with direct bright natural light. Viewing angles of 178° seem to be valid, but viewing directly on still gives best experience. Brightness is more than adequate while not being blinding at max setting.

Tiny speakers put out a clear/pleasant sound & volume level more than adequate for everyday tasks. Tested streaming music from YouTube and playing movies via VLC. No distortion even with laptop & source volume maxed.

Despite my hatred of track pads, I must admit this one works well and conveniently incorporates a fingerprint scanner in the top right corner. Left/right click work on ~80% of the height of the pad. Multi-finger gestures work well for scrolling, zooming and even minimizing everything to the desktop. A four-fingered pinch motions minimizes everything. Reversing the motion restores them all, but unfortunately doesn't bring the program you were last using to the top. A second gesture in the same direction brings you to Windows Taskview/Timeline. Taskview/Timeline shows all open programs in tiles and has the ability to show a history of websites visited, apps used, etc over the course of up to 30 days.

A backlit keyboard is a necessity in my opinion these days, so it is nice to see that they included it at this price. I favor mechanical keyboards for my desktops, but I must say I am pleased with the chiclets here with pretty solid feedback for such minimal travel. I'm sure the increased angle from the ErgoLift screen/cover helps here. Biggest nitpick of the keyboard is the lack of a LED indicator for the NUMLOCK key.

Rear cover of laptop is easily removable via 10 phillips screws, and I'm pleased to say that all major components can easily be serviced. M.2 2280 SATA drive, 30 mm wi-fi card, 1 open RAM slot, HSF is easily removable to re-paste/replace if necessary, and the battery is only held in with phillips screws.

Intake for HSF is on the bottom of the laptop. I thought this was a phenomenon that had went by the wayside, but I could be wrong. The fact that opening the screen lifts the laptop up on an angle (ErgoLift) for easier typing and ventilation helps, but this could still be problematic pending where the laptop is left. CPU heat exhausts at the top left of the chassis underneath the screen.

Excellent budget Notebook 12/21/2019 5:40:02 AM

Pros: Very light
Good Battery Life
Fast boot
Backlit Keyboard
Fingerprint Sensor
Upgradeable in terms of memory, HDD/SSD (spare 2.5" slot). M2 SSD is upgradeable to a larger capacity also.
Games will run fairly well, World of warships will run comfortably at high settings, 1080 with 35-40 fps.
The size of the power brick is very surprising, I have old phone chargers that are larger!

Cons: Numpad is non standard in terms of size, if you're a numpad user then this may cause you some issues. I'm not so it didn't.
The color, not to my taste but to be honest not a deal breaker at this price.
Thinking about opening the case will cause fingerprints to spontaneously appear everywhere!
The charger while small is of the right size and orientation to mess up other outlet access on some power bars.
Trackpad is tricky, at least for me.

Overall Review: I recently purchased a new laptop after my trusty HP Envy 15 decided that its hinges had opened too many times and completely disintegrated on me. I eventually bought an Asus TUF FX505 which is a fair bit higher spec than this Vivobook. Having said that, for almost 90% of my usage I would have been able to have gone with the Vivobook and saved myself circa 550 samolians, shhh don't tell the wife. It does all of the things snappily and competently that my TUF will do, the only difference being the gaming performance, which is why I bought the TUF in the first place. The Vivobook will run most games but only at low to medium settings, high settings for less demanding ones. Using Steam with in home streaming went very well as a work around to this but really the Vivobook is not designed or meant as a gaming notebook. As a general purpose work machine for document generation, internet browsing, email, media consumption it really punches the ticket.

Now for some specifics:-

The out of the box setup was smooth and without issue, no driver problems and once the bloatware and the ever present, nagging and utterly irritating Mcafee was removed this was a very pleasant experience.

As an eczema sufferer I have a hate hate relationship with fingerprint readers, my fingers frequently have outbreaks that mess with the readers ability to id me. The reader on the Vivobook has given me less trouble than the one on my old HP.

The trackpad is a bit iffy in my opinion but this may be due to me me being so used to HP's trackpads as I have similar problems on my TUF and I'm sure it will get better as I become acclimated to its tricks. I do wish that it had it's own drivers rather than rely on the built in Windows 10 ones as these, in my experience, are not as customizable as manufacturers ones.

Sound is OK but like a lot of notebooks it seems to be of limited volume, as a person who doesn't like headphones this is an irritation that most notebooks give me.

Wifi is good, and Intel! I have had problems on other machines that have Realtek Wifi adapters with the adapter disappearing completely when the notebook is woken up from sleep/hibernation, not an issue with Intel ones.

Bluetooth response is great although I had problems connecting to a Rosewill Bluetooth 2.1 speaker system, but this was more due to the versions of Bluetooth on the speakers and the age of them I believe.

User Benchmark (easy quick and dirty BM) rates it as a Destroyer as a desktop, with its gaming and workstation performance taking significant hits from the Graphics and Memory. The Graphics hit is understandable, the Intel UUHD 620 is a major improvement on past Intel integrated graphics cards but is still not designed for high games performance. The Memory hit is down to single channel mode I believe, addition of a second 8GB stick will improve this and currently is a very affordable upgrade.

Overall this is a great workaday notebook, it will fit very comfortably in terms of size and weight in a briefcase/backpack and for those that need computer access without AC power it will give a good number of hours of use. If you are looking for something to play heavy duty games, look elsewhere and prepare your wallet! For its price point, design (apart from the color), and workaday performance I give this 5 eggs, none of the cons I've listed above are serious enough for me to give a lower rating.

Asus vivobook s 15 p9o 12/19/2019 8:27:57 AM

Pros: green slim laptop
full size keyboard
keyboard lights up
nvme ssd drive
8 gigs ram with one open slot to upgrade

Cons: room for second hard drive a 2.5 inch SSD but no connector. So if you want to upgrade you just have to get a bigger nvme drive. comes with a small 256 nvme drive

Overall Review: I spent days playing with it and I am going to upgrade the ram for now to 16 gigs. it is snappy now but will be even better once upgraded. I love the color and the full size keyboard. I just wish it had a connector for the second drive. not sure if you can buy an adapter. if I needed a laptop this is one I would buy. Am also upgradinging it to wondows 10 pro.
