HGST delivers the world’s first hermetically sealed, helium hard drive, the Ultrastar® He6 for massive scale-out environments. Why does helium make a difference? Helium has only one-seventh the density of air. Replacing air with helium inside a hard drive dramatically reduces the turbulence caused by the spinning disks, cuts power consumption and results in a lower temperature within the disk drive.

The reduction in turbulence for the spinning disk allows HGST to deliver a seven-disk design in a traditional 3.5-inch form factor. In addition to being the world’s first helium-filled hard drive, HGST Ultrastar He6 is also the first hard drive in the industry to o er a 6-terabyte capacity. This design provides a 50% capacity gain and still reduces the energy needed to run the drive by up to 23%.

Key Advantages/Highlights
• World’s first helium-filled hard drive
• Industry-first 6TB capacity in a standard
• 3.5-inch form factor
• HelioSeal® process and 7StacTM design are keys to hermetically sealed drive with higher capacity
• TCOptimized design delivers on key elements of data center TCO: capacity, power, cooling and storage density
• SAS & SATA 6Gb/s models for configuration flexibility
• Self-Encrypting Drive (SED) options for HDD-level data security

Applications/Environments
• High-density data centers
• Massive scale-out data centers
• Containerized data centers
• Nearline storage applications
• Bulk storage
• Enterprise and data center applications where density and capacity are paramount

TCOptimized – Driving Down Data Center TCO with Helium
The amount of data that companies need to store is growing exponentially, but IT budgets remain flat. With 6TB, a low 5.3 idle watts, a reduced weight of 640g, and running at 4-5°C cooler, the new Ultrastar He6 lowers data center total cost of ownership (TCO) on virtually every level. Key TCO benefits when compared to a typical 3.5-inch, five-platter, air-filled 6TB drive include:

Technology Innovations Make it Happen
Through HGST’s innovative and patented HelioSeal process, the Ultrastar He6 drive is the industry’s first hermetically sealed helium-filled HDD that can be cost-effectively manufactured in high volume. This unique sealed-drive platform provides a path for higher capacity storage for decades to come while significantly lowering customer total cost of ownership (TCO). The inherent benefits of helium enable HGST’s new 7Stac disk design with 6TB, making it the world’s highest capacity HDD with the best TCO for cloud storage, massive scale-out environments, disk-to-disk backup, and replicated or RAID environments.

HGST Quality and Service
HGST’s Ultrastar He6 extends the company’s long-standing tradition of performance and capacity leadership. The proven drive design enables high reliability and availability to customer data. Ultrastar quality, performance and world class technical support and service provides customers with a lower total cost of ownership over previous generations.
HGST drives are backed by an array of technical support and services, which may include customer and integration assistance. HGST is dedicated to providing a complete portfolio of HDD/ SSD solutions to satisfy today’s monumental computing needs.

You get what you pay for 4/11/2019 7:43:02 AM

Pros: -Good speeds
-Cheap storage
-Quick response from support

Cons: Out of the 5 that I ordered, 1 died within a few days and a second one within a few weeks

Overall Review: These are heavily used drives so just be aware of what you're paying for. I purchased these drives knowing that so I wasn't surprised and support was quick to respond and fulfill RMA request.

Nice drive 4/5/2019 10:17:17 AM

Pros: Fast write and read speeds.

Cons: Takes too much time to turn on when I start my computer.

Overall Review: Drive is pretty good and fast. The one thing I don't like is that it takes a long time to turn on (two to three times more than my other HDDs), probably because it is an enterprise drive designed to be on all the time.

Bought two. Cheap storage. 3/11/2019 8:12:37 PM

Pros: Fast, quiet, cool. Both drives worked fine right out of the box.
Drive #1 - 32,600 hours
Drive #2 - 27,800 hours

Cons: Drive #1 has a clean S.M.A.R.T. record.
Drive #2 shows a "Current Pending Sector Count" of 1. The fault doesn't seem to be service-affecting. Yet. Obviously it has a wonky sector that needs to be monitored.

Overall Review: Big drives for a relatively small price. Fine for non-critical data.

Bought 4, showing sign of wear from close to 4 years of usage 2/27/2019 6:04:09 PM

Pros: - Drives arrived within a week and in good packaging.
- All drives were in sealed anti-static bags and bubble wrapped individually.
- No previously used data/filesystem remain on drives (properly wiped)

Cons: I put all 4 drives through short/long/extended SMART tests for days.
One drive has 1 reallocated section (SMART id 0x5) out of 5 permitted from the start. A second drive developed 1 reallocated sector after a week of use. Note that these drives have been used about 3.5 years and relatively low power cycle count (about 50-70 times), so I assume these were used in some datacenter prior.

Overall Review: I understand these are used drives and is willing to live with the reallocated sector (as long as it's not getting worse from here). The 3 years warranty from GoHardDrive is the reason I am willing to try it (and this is a 2nd backup from my current setup).
Overall the value is still high (33-40% off compared to a brand new drive)

Really happy! 2/18/2019 4:50:08 PM

Pros: Worked right out of the packaging, recognized in Windows 10 with no issues. CystalDiskInfo shows no errors, and I ran a read/write test that also came back with no issues. It was $99 for a 6TB 7200RPM drive, a steal!

Cons: 33,000+ hours on it.

Overall Review: I hope this drive lasts me for at least another 33,000 hours!

If you're really worried about this drive failing, buy a cheap squaretrade warranty or something. I think you'll be fine though since this is not a "consumer" grade drive and is built to last years powered on 24/7.

No issues, in use 2 months now on media server 2/16/2019 6:26:42 AM

Pros: No issues with the drive, performs at or better than factory spec so far.

Cons: As mentioned, this is not refurbished so much as used. Very few power cycles, but 32,000+ hours. Regardless, it is functioning flawlessly and extremely fast.

Overall Review: I definitely recommend the product for the price.

Very good drive for the money. 2/10/2019 6:40:31 PM

Pros: Hooked her up and formatted with no problem. Shows 129 power ups and 27,000 hours running time. No bad sectors. Copied lots of data back and forth and drive is fast. Purchased 3 other 3 tb drives from goharddrive and have been up and running two years. Good company and reliable drives.

Cons: None so far.
